Eligibility is based upon points earned in scholarship and in school activities. The motto for CSF is Scholarship for Service. SHIP FEDERATION A sludem mainlaining his membership in CSF for four semeslers or more, including at least one in his senior year, is eligible for the rank of Sealbearer. Sealbearers are eligible for special scholarships al , thirty colleges and universiiies in California and also at Yale, Columbia, l and the University of Chicago. NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP These students are four of many hundreds of semi-finalists participating in the National Merit Scholarship program. This test is administered yearly to promising high school seniors. It is designed to provide a list of highly quali- fied students to organizations in- terested in financing scholarship programs. MELLOSTRINGS The members of McCIatchy's string trio are chosen annually from the better players of the Senior Orchestra. Consisting of a violinist, cellist, and pianist, the Mellostrings provide entertain- ment for numerous private or- ganizations as well as many PTA meetings. The choir sings at assemblies, musical competitions, and other programs such as the annual Spring Concert held in the school. This excellent choir is under the di- rection of Mrs. Cross. S E N I O R B A N D 'The McClatchy Senior Band contributes highly at the games and assemblies in the boosting of school spirit. Under the direction of Mr. Braafladt, this group participated in holiday parades, the Spring Concert, and the All-City Music Festival. The talent dis- played in this show drew gratify- ing appreciation from the audi- ences of both performances. The stu- dent chairman of the program was Kay Scribner. One year of high school art or a report from the membership com- mittee are the requirements for joining this club. Sponsor: Mrs. Williams. THREE R'S lCalifornia Education Clubt The California Education Club gives high school students first-hand opportunities to learn more about the teaching profession. Members visit elementary and iunior high schools to observe actual teaching methods. An interest in teaching as a career is necessary to ioin. Sponsors: Mrs. LoForte and Mr. Clemons. THE MASQUES iDrama Clubl The activities of the Drama Club enable students to act and express themselves. Guest speakers frequently visit this group. Members also learn back-stage and make- up work. One semester of drama is required along with a memorized monologue. Sponsor. Mr. Sibley. DOLLS IN WHITE lNursing Clubl The Nursing Club is designed for girls whose interests lie mainly in the field of medicine. The information acquired in this group is that which is beneficial in later lfe. Any student having completed her low sophomore semester is eligible for appli- cation. Sponsor: Miss Breen. LE CERCLE iFrench Clubl The French Club is designed to provide interests and activities not available in the classroom. Guest speakers, some of whom are native-born Frenchmen, frequently visit this club. A year of French with a grade of C or better is required for member- ship. Sponsor: Miss Skrepetos. DER DEUTSCHE VEREIN iGerman Clubl The German Club is one ofthe many language clubs at McClatchy. This group meets once a month, combining social activities with the furthering of the students' knowledge of the relationship between Germanic and English cultures. Sponsor: Mr. Beatie. 52 JUVENIS CIRCULUS LEONUM llatin Clubl Through the activities of the Latin Club, members maintain their interest in the Latin language and in the classics. One year of Latin with a grade of B or better enables a student to be eligible for membership. Sponsor: Miss Reynolds. LOS HISPANISTAS lSpanish Clubl The Spanish Club has the largest membership in the school. This organization pro- vides an opportunity for the members to practice conversing in the language. The club is known for its interesting activities such as the annual pinata party. Sponsors: Dr. Masante and Mr. Carlos. at ui ARCHIVITES iHistory Clubl The History Club is one of McCIatchy's most popular organizations. The main purpose of this club is to teach its members more about news and current events through the talks of guest speakers. Prospective members must be recommended by a history instructor. Sponsor: Mr. Hallauer. ll THAGORIAN SIGMA lMath Clubl The Math Club is open to students continuing on to their third year of mathema- tics. The club is designed to broaden the understanding of the applications of math- ematics to scientific, engineering, and business professions. Sponsors: Mr. Fraser and Mr. Dyer. W,,,k', fn ' Al , LEOSCIENTISTS lScience Clubl The obiective of the Science Club is to promote interest and increase knowledge in th various fields of science through contacts not available in science courses. One completed semester in high school science with a recommended grade enables a student to ioin. Sponsors: Mr. Sanders and Mr. Curtice. K6DSP lRaclio Clubl The Radio Club is set up for boys who are interested in amateur radio in partic- ular and electronics in general. It is one of the few hobbies licensed and controlled by the U. S. Government. Sponsor: Mr. Welsh. , UTERATURE CLUB The Literature Club is McClatchy's newest club. lt was organized in order to ex- pand and stimulate interest in creative writing. The club publishes an annual mag- azine, containing material written by students in the club. To attain membership in the club, one must submit a sample of his creative writing for iudging. Sponsors: Mr. Ramsey and Mr. Todd. CHESS CLUB The Chess Club is open to all students who want to learn how to play chess and improve their game. Tournaments, matches, and other forms of chess competition are conducted to promote the popularity of the game of chess. Sponsor: Mr. Betts.
