THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA, PROGRESSIVE DONOR OE OUR EDUCATION WE HAIL IN TI-IIS 1940 NUGGET JD'l2wD'l.i We, Who are about to become more active citizens in the state of California, often do not realize to what extent we are indebted to it. All of us are dependent upon the golden bounty of our state's mines, rich farm lands, businesses, forests and other resources. The editors, realizing this, decided to honor our state by using it as the theme of this year- book, ln a sense, our school is a state within a state: We have a governor in our principal, his council in his vice-principals and coun- selors, We have elective officers headed by our student body president and a representa- tive form of government in our House of Representatives and class councils. Accordingly, we have devoted our section pages to beautiful scenes from our native state!Yosemite, the State Capitol, Lake Tahoe, the Redwoods, and the sea coast. May I say that the story of our new C. K. McClatchy Senior High School also has meant pioneering on the part of the good people of Sacramento, of students, teachers and school officials. To the student body, l say that yours is the golden opportunity of sharing in the development of our state, and of living up to the challenge and bringing to fulfillment Sam Walter Foss' command in his poem, The Coming American, Bring me men to match my mountains. MR. S. A. PEPPER, Principal. On December 7, 1939, the class presented The Thirteenth Chair, which brought forth much favorable comment, and the climax of high school life came in the Senior Ball, Tanuary 24. The class is most appreciative of all the friendly aid of Mr. Eugene Lindberg, class sponsor. ', D r, 61, During its three years' attendance at C. K, McClatchy Senior High School, the class of Iune '40, the first class to become completely l..ionized, has con- tributed a great deal to the progress of its school and its activities. Since their enrollment, members of this class have been outstanding in sports. Because of the effort put forth by its members, it has made an admir- able showing in the various interclass track meets that have been held each spring. In basketball, football, and baseball, lune '40 class members have also taken a prominent part. Talent contributed to the various variety shows by members of this class has helped in making each of them enjoyable and entertaining. ln an effort to make it possible for the members of their class to graduate as friends, and not as strangers, as is so many times the case, they have, in their senior year, had an event a month. These events have been in the form of general get-togethers for all seniors of lune '4U. At these events each student has worn a tag bearing his name in order to make it easier to become ac- quainted, Through these tags and events they hoped that they would come to be known as The Friendly Class. The class of Iune '40 has given many not-to-be-forgotten after school dances in the school gymnasium. They are responsible for helping with the planning and presenting of the Iunior Prom of 1938 and the Senior Ball of l94O, both of which they presented with the class of Ianuary '40. The Senior Ball in particular will be long remembered since it was the first senior ball to be held in the Memorial Auditorium. Thus it has been with the class of Iune '40, always forging ahead in school activities. However, all the credit cannot be given to the students alone, but a great deal must be given to the splendid class directors, of whom they have had three, Mr. Mohr, Mr. Hallauer, and Miss Lothhammer. lt has been through their untiring efforts and helpful guidance that the class of lune '40 is able to feel that it has been one of the outstanding classes that has attended C. K. McClatchy Senior High School. Page Nine!! D Aw 3 A . ., ' Magi, if I I I Lg iff '11 ' - , i ' gg: T fs I QTW L 5 515 39 ., 3 f ' ,,,v ..-. , mr. I , qg v, . Entering C. K. McClatchy in lanuary, 1938, as the second low sophomore class, its members were quite bewildered, but they soon snapped out of this and gained recognition in the political field by electing class officers. With this as a precedent, they have since spread their members into sports, music, art, scholcdpsthip, and all other groups around which a school functions. 'IE Iunior Prom in C. K. McClatchy's 'Ski Lodge was their greatest effort to date, With a Winter setting and snow suits, skis, and a snow cabin for a realistic background, those who attended will remember this as no ordinary affair. ln barely six months the clctss will leave McClatchy, but before they do they have many more activities, the two most important being the Senior Play and the Senior Ball. Since entering as low sophomores this class has participated in many social affairs, the feature of this being the Ski Dance, or lunior Prom. A ski lodge, travel posters, and fir trees furnished appropriate surroundings for a pleasant evening of dancing. On March 29 a High Iunior Assembly was held, the first general meeting that this class has had since entering as low sophomores. Miss Thompson, class sponsor, discussed plans for next years program. The class is hoping that these plans will be successful, and is looking forward to a bigger and better Senior Ball. Marvin Silva, master of ceremonies, presented the gavel to George Buljan, the new president. The class of lune '41 prides itself on the sociability that is shown among its members. Upon entering the school, all new students are introduced to the classmates in their home room at the first opportunity, to make them feel at home. The most important event of the year was the welcome dance given on Oct. l2, l939, for the incoming low sophomores. As the dance was given in the autumn, Harvest Time was chosen as the theme. Harvest moons placed on the gym walls and brown and orange cornucopias hanging from the baskets helped carry out this idea, and on one wall a large poster drawn and painted by Frances Maita gave a greeting of welcome to the guests. As entertainment for the many dancers during the intermission, Madalena Mar- tinelli played the accordion and Arthur Crown did a tap dance. Dawn Bradford, class president, was in charge of the affair, assisted by Barbara Gray, Shirley Anderson, Robert McClellan, Claude Lear, Bob Walt, Harriet Kinney, Patsy Lancaster, Violet Pesely, and Alice Claire Brown. One of the most successful projects undertaken was the reception given lor the low sophomores who entered in February. Since it was given on Valentine's day, it took the form ot a Valentine Carnival, with appropriate decorations carrying out the theme, Games, dancing, and entertainment features helped to provide the carnival spirit. Perhaps the biggest accomplishment has been the organization of the class into a strong group. The aim ot the council is to have each student acquainted with the others before they graduate. The class showed its prowess in sports by capturing a strong second place in the interclass track meet, and many ot the point winners made points for McClatchy in inter-school competition. lt also had a goodly number of its members on other school teams, All in all, it looks as it this class is really going places. Our enthusiastic cheering at games and rallies can be partially attributed to the excellence ot our yell leaders. Among these groups are the coeoperatives, who under the direction of Miss Alma Schocke, registrar, receive training and experience in office work and give much clerical assistance to the school. Co-operatives work three periods a day in Various offices such as those of the registrar, Comptroller, the vice-principals, and the library. To become a co-operative the student enrolls as for a class. He should have a working knowledge of typing, shorthand or bookkeeping, and use of the office machines. This is a particularly good record in View of the fact that the traffic problem along Freeport Boulevard is one of the greatest in the city. Much credit for this record is due to the excellent work of the traffic squad, who, under the supervision of Capt. A. E. Waite and with the assistance of Fred Holtzhauser, special school officer, manage the lights, direct traffic in the circle, and enforce other regulations. Much credit is also due to the students who showed outstanding coopera- tion with the squad. Membership in the squad is limited to ROTC. students and sixteen students work at the job each semester. McClatchy 13 - Sacramento 6 The Lions finished by far their most successful football season by drubbing and completely outplaying their arch rivals, Sacramento, in a two-hour battle which proved to be one of the best of high school football games. The game was featured by a pass interception followed by a 65-yard run to a touchdown. The spectacular play was completed by Vernon Baer, speedy McClatchy track and football player. The McClatchy eleven was a continual threat to Coach George Relles' charges, being in enemy territory the better part of the evening. Sacramento made two serious threats during the game, one at the end of the half, and the other on their touchdown drive. The Lions scored a total of 497 points to their opponents' 384. Forward Bert Bonomi was high point man for the Red and White cagers, with Ernie Masko- vich being runner-up. Bill Putnam and Bob Rodgers were outstanding at guard-Rodgers being picked for the all-city first string, and also as captain of McClatchy's team, while Putnam, a mid-term graduate, proved the bulwark of McClatchy's defense during the first half of league play. The varsity began its season by edging out a victory over the supposed coming league champions, Stockton, 33-31. ln its second game of the season, they kept up their record, defeating Woodland easily, 40-29. ln the third league game, over-confidence on the part of the varsity lost it a game to Lodi, 31-30, and in the final game of the half, Sacramento dumped McClatchy 28-20. ln the second half, McClatchy started slowly, losing to Stockton, 3l-21. Mc- Clatchy came back strongly to down Woodland overwhelmingly, the score being 53-26. Lodi proved the Lion nemesis for a second time, as they again dumped McClatchy. This time McClatchy topped off the season by completely outplaying a favored Sacramento five. An air-tight defense of Bob Rodgers and Dave Larkin kept the Dragons from scoring, while Ernie Maskovich, Al Lazzarone and Bert Bonomi combined talents and led the McClatchy scorers with seven, five, and five counters, respectively. The Sacramento guards, Bob Salkeld and Bob Halstead, put up a good defense, but were no match for the fighting Lion point seekers who won, 2l-16. agelwz tj woo Jim, d5'a.m6a!L J Bfgser Picture CVarsiiyJ-Uppper Row flelt to rightl-Fred Wristen, Ernie Maskovxch, Henry Costanzo lmanagerl, acolm White fmanagerj, hil Santich, Iohn Ceccarelli, Elwyn Babe Houx. Two of the Lion losses were to Sacramento High, and one of their ties was to the Dragons. McClatchy failed to capitalize and defeat their arch rivals this year. Other McClatchy losses were to the Cal Frosh, and two games were lost to Sacramento Iunior College. The Lion varsity, although alternately hot and cold, really played some heads up ball. The lunior and Sophomore varsities also completed good seasons. Although the luniors followed the varsity as to inconsistency, the Sophornores were un- defeated throughout the season. Outstanding on the mound for the McClatchy varsity were Hub Agrava and lerry Hutton. Bert Bonomi, Fred Wristen and Dutch McWilliams provided plenty of hitting punch during the major part of the season, even though Bonomi failed to collect a hit in the last two games, he hit in every other game. Other standouts for the Red and White were Babe Houx at first base, Earl Lavine at second base, and lohn Ceccarelli as catcher. Next season from his first string varsity, Coach Woerner will have but three returning veterans: lerry Hutton, Wally Turpen and Fred Wristen. Iefferson broad-jumped to fame for the Red and White, and Roberts proved to be part of the cream of the league high-jumping crop. For the HB team, Hank Paschane was by far the outstanding point collector, as he averaged l2 points a meet, Winning the l6U-yard low hurdles, the l2O- yard low hurdles, and placing in the shot put. Paschane was captain. Other B notaloles were Sam Frank and Harold Meyers in the 440-yard dash, lack Knight in the high jump and 100-yard dash, Toshi Yamada in the 220-yard dash, and Richard McCarroll in the broad-jump. Sammy Frank, B 440 man, won his event with a new record of 52.6, and Lee Martyr, sensational varsity find, copped off second place in a heartbreaking finish. eight DLIJL' jpolzia, Every year girls are becoming more interested in sports. Here at McClatchy the interest runs particularly high. When the girls enter school in September they start the season by playing hockey. Although hockey is one of the most strenuous games the girls play, it is a special favorite among them. Probably the most popular game among the girls is basketball, lt is one oi the fastest and most exacting of girls' sports. There are six players and the tloor is divided into three courts. Our girls can pass that ball and sink baskets like champions. With the new outdoor courts basketball will reign longer as a favorite sport among the girls here at McClatchy. When spring comes, baseball starts. The girls don't have spring training but when they step up to that plate just Watch those homers llyl The girls show good form when they toss the ball around the outfield and infield. Competition is keenest with baseball games and they are always exciting. Pnyrt Orj4'l1:1n1Irc1Z Dzlaf Spnfria, For games that require a little more personal technique, the girls play ping pong, croquet, shuffle board, and badminton. Dancing and archery are included in the curriculum. The faculty advisors for Girls' Sports are: Miss Miriam Bleamaster, Mrs. Helen Conover, Miss Nell Flanders, Miss Margaret Mix, acting chairman, and Mrs. Carol Squires. No matter what the game may he, the girls are always aiming for good sportsmanship and cooperation. This is the most important purpose of girls' sports.
