MCCLATCHY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL WE DEDICATE THIS 1939 YEARBOOK. IT IS WHAT THEY STAND EOR THAT WILL MAKE OUR HIGH SCHOOL LIEE A HAPPY MEMORY. Illlil l15?i?ElB!'i-llliihmilmli 1 , -1 i- Jnfmwmd, There is no better illustration of youth than high school life. It is the climax of the first years of learning and adjust- ment. Since the high school is such an important stepping stone in the life of an individual, the Staff has chosen for the theme of this year's Nugget --Life of the High School Student. Throughout the pages of this book we have attempted to picture inform- ally various views of the building and scenes of our school life as it is the year around. lt is our hope that in future years it will be treasured because of the many pleasant memories it will afford. We wish it to be a happy reminder of life at McClatchy. ir Y W W W in f W MH :'fmR1,FS iivfzurv 1lTIUI4'FITITlf wir' vf' .1 '-1wr:1.1 Bnwzd. pg 5 , 1933- 7939 an-' 1. ADOLPH EHRHORN, SpGNSOI 36 gm pg 315 79 The class of February, l939, was unique in that it spent a year and a half at Sacramento High School and a year and a half at McClatchy High School. These last three semesters will be but memories twenty years from now. The hours spent at our history, solid geometry, modern literature, and French classes will be forgotten, but there will be a few things which we recall from time to time with the pride of those who have accomplished something worthwhile. Among these will be the Christmas tree in the front hall, surrounded by gifts of food for the needy, and Charm School , the senior play, which was a delightfully entertaining high school production. As a fitting climax, the oc- casion none will forget was the Senior Ball held in the Eastern Star Temple where we students assembled in formal dress for our last high school dance. Ten to twenty years from now students will recall fondly these events and their daily haps penings in their classes when they tried and thought they succeeded, in putting something over on the teacher . Since the theme was superstitions, both good and bad, this dance was known as the Superstitious Swing, and Miss Mar- jorie Watts was crowned Lady Luck. The com- mittee who helped to make the dance a success consisted of: Monroe Baer, Wilbur Yost, Travers Durkee, Pat McCaffery, Carolyn Morgan, George Hefflefinger, Betty Taylor, Harry Tammen, Estelle Yost, and Billie Ferguson. We hope to contribute many more good times to the traditions of the school before we leave McClatchy. If our last six months of the school are as happy as the last two and a half years have been, the lanuary class of 1940 will always look back upon their high school days with happy memories. Our council was a busy one throughout the year, and with the aid of Mr. Eugene Lindberg, our sponsor, did much to promote class activities. Appearing before the public as well as the school, the band, orchestra and vocal groups deserve our praise. The band has added color and zest to our football games. It can now boast of a large membership. The orchestra has presented several formal concerts and has appeared free quently before the student body. The vocal groups include the A Cappella Choir, the Girls' Glee, the Mixed Chorus, and a Boys' Glee. These groups have been very active. They have always been willing and eager to entertain at concerts, assemblies, Parent Teacher meetings and the like. We wish to thank Mrs. Boden, Miss Lothhammer, and Mr. Stevens for their help. McClatchy Senior High School was the establishment of the Iunior Traf- fic Squad to regulate traffic near the school. This squad was organized among the ROTC. students and has been in operation for two years with a fine record of safety. Complete control of traffic upon the streets and in the park- ing area is the responsibility of the students assigned to this work. Credit for Civil Service is given to students who are part of the Traffic Squad. Students selected must pass rigid citizenship requirements and remain on the squad as long as these requirements are maintained. Traffic captain for this year is Norman Ras- mussen, assisted by William Smith. Members of the Traffic Squad operate the signal light upon the street in front of the school, which is a very important safety factor in con- trol of vehicle and pedestrian traffic. The squad is organized under provisions of a city ordinance and is supervised by a regular police officer as- signed to this duty by the police department. -fnt.1.Ns rr.. .- -im L.m.,wu-V-x--exam----1-m-n.4r--1+-f-is -'-t M- Mfrs-A-vMf no ' The Co11pe1c1t1vQ sT11de11ts w1v1k three hours J day as nss1s1c1111s 111 The 1eq1st1c11's cihce, f:c,:111p- 111z1le1'5 11t11ce,ut1e11dG11ce ofhce, t111311h1u1-y, Q111d 113 ste11J111o1111e-15 tv vc111o11s 1:ie1zc111111Q11t 5111111- ste110q1'c1p11y 4:1 f1c'1io11111111q. Composed of a fast charging line, backed heavily by reserves and an equally fast and hard running backfield, the Red and White eleven launched their campaign with an im- pressive 6 to 6 tie with the Placer Union High School. After rolling up a total of 211 yards against the Hillers, the Red shirted gridders con- tinued to show power, running rough-shod over Christian Brothers College to the tune of 26 to U. As a result of the Lion's 8 to U victcry over the Grant Union High School in their third tilt, McClatchy was left at the top of the heap oi those in quest for the coveted city grid title. Swinging into the crucial part of their cam- paign, MccClatchy's winning streak was teme porarily halted by three straight setbacks, a l9 to U defeat by Stockton High School, 7 to O in a gruelling battle with Woodland High School, and a 26 to O thumping at the hands of Lodi Union High School. As the score McClatchy 34, Roseville, l3: might suggest, McClatchy scored at will in swamping an airminded Roseville aggregation, McClatchy's attempt to annex the city grid title to their rapidly growing prestige failed when they were defeated in Sacramento's little big game by a score of l9 to O. For great- est arnng the accomplishments of McClatchy's varsity basketball team were the decisive vic- tories over the Sacramento and Stockton High Schools, the first in the school's history. Utilizing Coach Chauncey Wilson's fast breaking offense, the Red and White cagers fast breaked their way to fifteen victories in eighteen games played. The Lions conquered Grant Union, Sacramento High Schools, and Christian Brothers College to tie for first in the mythical city championship. ln the conference race McClatchy placed a strong second, one game behind the leaders-winning five and dropping two games.
