Bussing Creates Tensions Mounting tension caused by court-ordered inte- gration exploded on the third day of school in the form of a riot. Seemingly uncontrollable fights broke out between blacks and whites resulting in the dismissal of classes at mid-day. The following day the welcomed appearance of plain-clothes policemen as well as uniformed patrolmen guar- anteed no further clashes. McCallum became the focal point of both local and national news cover- age with reporters and photographers contributing to the confusion of the situation. Out of the strug- gle for order Superintendent of Schools Jack Da- vidson consulted with both sides, cooling tempers and smoothing hurt feelings. Hobart Gaines, for- mer principal of Anderson, and W. A. Sloan, prin- cipal of McCallum, together worked with Davidson to re-establish tranquility. To help avoid any reoc- currences of similar incidents in the future, - a Human Relations Committee, composed of both ethnic groups, was established. The committee's purpose is to air racially-oriented problems which arise and attempt to find acceptable solutions. xy, Wa al bl
