The Royal Blue went through their schedule with seven victories and only three defeats, topping it off by taking the traditional Victory Bell after their defeat of William B. Travis High on Thanks- giving Eve. The Knights were coached by men who had that spirit and enthusiasm which builds a good spirited club. Head Coach Forrest Dutch Kline, a line coach at the old Austin High in 1952, was assisted by Charlie Munson, up from Baker Junior High, M. R. Davis, from Laredo High, and jimmy Viramontes. Truly the Big Four ha a lot to do in the way the 1953 season pro essed. The Knights reached as high as fourth place in tgle state polls, but when the district play came, the rains came and the once shining Knights found themselves another enemy-mud. When the season was completed, the Northsiders had scored 197 points to the oppositions' 135. MCCALLUM 33, KERRVILLE 0 This was the be inning as the Knights rolled up thirty- three points, holding Tivy's Antlers to zero. Johnny Brougher tallied two touchdowns to lead the Blue-and- Gray while W. H. White, Iohn Shaffer, and Albert Roelse tallied one each. The Knights tallied three touchdowns which did not count because of penalties. MCCALLUM 19, VICTORIA 0 The Victoria game was a hard fought, slam-bang 48 minutes with 90 yards in roughness stepped off against the Knights. McCallum scored early for the second straight time with Jimmy Shurtliff, Brougher, and White contributing with touchdowns. MCCALLUM 13, EDISON 20 The bitter taste of defeat was tasted by McCallum for the Erst time in history by the Bears of Edison who went through their season undefeated. Bad breaks by the Knights gave the Bruins their three touchdowns, the winning score coming in the final period. Brougher tallied both Knight scores-one a 76-yard gallop and the other a 49-yard pass from Shaffer. McCALLUM 27, FOREST 14 McCallum tasted mud for the Hrst time and had to come from behind at halftime to defeat the Class AAAA Lions from Dallas at House Park. Shaffer scored three touchdowns and kicked three extra points to lead the Knights. Fullback Fred Arnold plunged over to score the final touchdown. McCALLUM 32, CROZIER TECH 26 Brougher led the Knights to this victory, the fourth in five starts. For Tech, it was their first defeat and it was in their own back yard. It took a last uarter score to defeat the Wolves as the Knights defeateel a Class AAAA team for the second straight time. Brougher gained 157 Eards and scored two touchdowns in the non-district na e. McCALLUM 7, TEMPLE 18 McCallum found out that they weren't good swim- mers and the Wildcats, District 5AAA champions, sank the Kni hts 18 to 7. The loss in Temple ham ered the hopes of a district championship. Shaffer passed, 23 yards to Brougher for the visitors' only score. McCALLUM 13, BRYAN 7 The first district win for McCallum was an unimpres- sive score, but the Knights showed improvement in their passing with 198 yards. Mud slowed down McCallum's speedy backs which thwarted the ground game. Behind 7 to 0, the Knights tallied in the second and final quarters to win going away. Shaffer and Arnold scored touch- downs. McCALLUM 7, CORSICANA 23 Every break in the book went against the Knights on this dismal night as the surprising Ti ers scored a 23 to 7 victory and cut all hopes of a McCaium district cham- pionship. The Knights scored their touchdown late in the game with Shaffer scoring from the one yard-line. Again this game was played under rainy skies. McCALLUM 25, PALESTINE 7 Nothing-no nothing-could stop McCallum in Pales- tine as the Knights scored their most impressive victory of the season. The Wildcats were one to two touchdown favorites, but Shurtliff, Shaffer, Brougher, Joe Rosentritt, Will and Wess Wyman, Arnold, Lyndon Crider, and W. H. White all chipped in for the well earned victory. Brougher kicked McCallum's first field goal late in the first half. McCALLUM 21, W. B. TRAVIS 20 The surprising Rebels fought to a 13 to 7 halftime lead in this annual grudge game at House Park before a full house, but the Knights caught fire in the second half and took home the victory bell. The victory gave McCallum a tie for second place with Palestine and Corsicana. Shaffer scored two touchdowns and Arnold scored once while Brougher booted three extra points to win the game. Gaining All-District for McCallum were Will and Wess Wyman, Joe Rosentritt, and johnny Brougher while W. H. White, Fred Arnold, and John Shaffer, the districtis leading scorer, made the second All-District team. Both Will and Wess Wyman, the twin-terrors of District 5AAA, made All-State on one poll, while Wess made honorable mention on another. Viramontes had six men over six feet in height, and several just reaching the six-foot mark. No one could deny that he had the tall men. But what could tall men do if they had no experience? The experts won- dered. So the Knights strode through their schedule, win- ning 14 and losing only 5, and capturing the District 5AAA championship with a 9-1 record. And with the championship tucked under their belts, the Knights went into a bi-district playoff with Galena Park. No doubt the Knights set a goal for the team in future years to match or conquer. McCallum opened their schedule with three straight victories before they bowed to the S. F. Austin Nlaroons. The Maroons handed the Knights three of their five defeats in regular play. Viramontes' towering Knights slammed Concordia in their opener in the McCallum gym, 62 to 31, and whipped St. Edis Tigers in the St. Edwards gym, 56 to 35, after McCallum had led by only one point at halftime. The Knights traveled to San Marcos, and edged the Rattlers, 45 to 44, on Jerry Salcheris two free throws in the final 15 seconds. However, the Maroons put a stop to their winning streak with a 48 to 42 victory, scoring 23 points in the third quarter after the Knights had led at halftime, 19-to-14. LaRue Robinson was high point man with 18 points, followed by john Shaffer's 13 points. In the second meeting with the Maroons in the S. F. But a packed McCallum Gym gave the Broncs the jitters, and McCallum walked off with an easy 43 to 30 victory. The bright feature was the holding of Bryan to one point in the second quarter. Entering the second half of the district race, the Knights romped over Gorsicana, 64 to 44, Hawley tally- ing 15 points to keep the Northsiders in a tie with Bryan for the lead. Travis came stalking into the McCallum Gym, hoping to sink the Knights out of the conference leadership. Though McCallum trailed by 21 to 19 at halftime, they rallied quickly to whip the Rebels, 46 to 35, Hawley continued his hot scoring pace which led him to the district scoring championship with 16 points. Shaffer tallied 14 points to follow. Templeis VVildCats put a scare into the Knights in the VVildcat Gym before McCallum took off with a tingling 50 to 47 victory. Shaffer's 22 points were good for high-point hon- ors. A stall by Hawley and Salcher preserved the vic- tory. The following game was a March of Dimes benefit game with the Austin Ma- roons. But again, the Dis- trict GAAAA runnerups de- feated the Knights, 47 to 41, despite Shaffer's 19 points. The top victory of the year came to the Knights in Bryan when jimmy Ver- montes, club defeated the Two points by Morrisey in the Gorsicana game as Fred Arnold comes in to assist. Right - Two points await Shaffer as he goes up to score in the Alamo Heights game. 111'11111'11s, 55 111 -153, 111 1111111 1 111 1111 t111 11811 9 1'11111111111111s11111. 1111111111111 111 N111 11111111 111111 1101111181111 1'11111'1't 18 11111 11 171111111181 11 11 11111 11-1' 1'11ntri1111tin1.5 131 111111 1 111 t111' K1111.f111S 1-11111-11 t111'11 111111111 S1 18011 s1111111111 111111 1 59 111 511 11'1ll1l1ID1l flY1'l' 1,111 811111 111811111 11111111 1111111111 111 1111 111111 111111111 77 11 51111111 1111 1111 1511 ' 1 1 ...-' with 17111111111 cv2l11'1l2l 1J11l'11S 11-111111' 111111 s 11111111 1'11r 1111' K1I11,f1115. 111111 11111 1 t 1 111111 11111 11,111 t11 11111-. r17111' A11lC'1i1'1S 1111111 1111 11181 1111111 111 C 111111 611 11156. with ,111-514111-1' 11111111 111111111 1111111t111L2 7811111 S1l111171'I' 111111 17 1111' x1Cf11l11llII1 11111 1111 11 1111111 13 11111 s '1'111- s1'1'11n11 Lfitllll' was 111111111 11111111 first 11,11II11' 111111 1111- K11i1f111s S0111 1111- 51-1'i1-s 111111 11111-1 111118 S1111 11111111111 511111111-11 11l1'1I' 111111111-ss 111t11 11111111111 11111 11111 111111 1111 111111 111111 1 1111511 111111111' 1111119 1 -1-'.1 1' . McCallum had a 6-4 city mark, beating Austin B and Travis B Teams three times, losing twice to each club. Ike Taylor led the B team scorers with 152 points. Our First BASEB LL TEAM Coach Charlie Munson molded an inexperienced baseball nine of only one letterman to a club which went through their non-district schedule undefeated and should go a long ways in district play. George Green, the only letterman for Munson, and his splendid hitting pulled the Knights through tough contests. Righthanders Greg Martin and LaRue Robinson itched fine ball for the Knights, Martin winning thiree of the five wins re istered in non- district play. McCallum opened with a 5 to 4 victory over Luling in the o ener, then blanked Adamson by 3 to 0. The Kniglits defeated Concordia twice, 7 to 2, and continued their winnin streak with a surprising 10 to 6 triumph over the Tlouston cham- pions, Reagan. McGallum,s jimmy Mitchell reaches first base on a clean single in the Adamson game at House Park. The Knights are in District 14-AA along with Aus- tin schools, S. F. Austin and NV. B. Travis, and San Antonio schools Alamo Heights and Harlandale plus Victoria. All six schools play each other twice, and the champion plays the Houston champion.
