MR. PAUL GREER
The senior class is honored to dedicate the
1959 PENNANT to Mr. Paul Greer. Seldom has
a teacher Won the complete admiration of the
student body in a relatively short time as has
Mr. Greer. His enthusiasm for every phase of
school life with which he is connected enables
him to wield a constructive influence on those
under him. Boys fortunate enough to have been
in his chemistry class will attest to his firm, but
interesting method of teaching.
Mr. Greer, now in his fifth year at McCallie,
is head of the science department, a member of
the military staff, and this year manager of the
Commissary. Although this last one was only a
temporary job, he will continue as the storeas
McCallie is indeed fortunate to have on its
faculty a man of Mr, Creeris character and

ball team bounced back to upset Darlington and
tie previously unbeaten TMl, A new building
was completed for the junior school and eleven
boys were announced as semifinalists in the
Merit Scholarship tests.
ln the winter one of the most successful sports
seasons in lVlcCallie history was enjoyed, as two
teams won lVlid-South titles. Semester exams
kept everyone busy.
The spring was highlighted by the presenta-
tion ol top awards such as the Casey and Peglar
in addition to the Grayson and Campbell. The
Tornado achieved the highest possible ranking
a newspaper can hold in the state. There were
numerous regimental parades in honor of various
people and to climax everything seniors saw the
truits of their hard work materialize at Com-
Nancy Currey, escorted hy Bob Denton, was crowned the
Sweetheart of McCallie by Dr. Bob McCallie to climax the
annual Sweetheart contest.
Dan Massey became the second McCallie student to win
a Merit scholarship and achieved nationwide publicity
when he was one of forty finalists in the Westinghouse
Science Talent Search.
Bill Sullivan and Mack Armstrong were awarded John
Motley Morehead Scholarships to the University of
North Carolina. The formal presentation of the scholar-
ships was made at Class Day by Dr. Sheppard Jones of
McCallie sponsored a benefit wrestling match in De-
cember for the Kermit Lance Memorial Scholarship
Fund at St. Andrews. Local newspapers referred to the
match as the outstanding event in sportsmanship for
the year. Pictured here during a brief intermission at
the match are Dr. Julian Gunn of St. Andrews, Dr.
R. L. McCallie, McCallie Captain Pat Smartt and the
St. Andrews captain.
