A record number of 4-96 students registered for
the fifty-fourth year of the McCallie School on
Monday, September 8, 1958. The formal opening
was held in the chapel the next morning with Dr.
C. E.. Gammon of the Central Presbyterian Church
speaking. Included in the enrollment were 262 day
students and 234- boarders, mostly from Southeast-
ern states. There were 108 seniors.
Six new members were added to the faculty, mak-
ing it the largest ever. One of the instructors, Mr.
Jon Regen, was at McCallie two years ago. Mr.
Regen taught English l and II, and coached Ter-
mite Football and assisted in basketball and track.
The English department added two other new
members, in addition to Mr. Regen. Mr, G, C.
McNabb, a native of New York state, taught sen-
ior English as well as speech and art. Mr. M. R.
Richards taught junior school English and first
year French, and assisted in athletics.
Mr. W. L. Houck was secured to help Mr. Paul
Greer with the chemistry work, since the great de-
mand for chemistry made it necessary to have two
instructors in that department. Mr. Houck also
gave slide rule lessons.
