His last class, this year's seventh graders, only came under his magic spell in the classroom lor a few short weeks, but they, like all the others before them, will never forget Professor. McCallie will never be the same without hi.m, but McCallie will never be entirely without him for the vigor and richness of his personality will always be a part of the McCallie which he helped to build. Doc- tor is tremendously active in church work and in various civic clubs. The l949 edition of McCallie football will be looked back on as one of the most suc- cessful teams even though the Mid-South Championship Was not Won. Coach Nardo's first year as head coach was certainly one of thrills and also of disappointments. With few returning lettermen and many inexperienced prospects, Coaches Nardo, Spencer, and Cleveland deserve a great deal of credit in FCCTBALL Coaching the team to a Winning seasons-a record of six Wins against three losses. Led by Captain Tommy Fanioy and Alter- nate Captain Fred Taylor, the Tornado showed the fighting spirit of most McCallie teams in coming from behind in the first game of the season to win over Notre Dame. Backed by the spectacular play of George Humphreys and Charles Cousar throughout the season, Athletic Director Bob McCallie congratulates Coach Iohnn N d 1' I b y ar o on a me oct all season as Captain Tommy Fan- ioy looks on. 84 the Tornado spilled several teams from the top ranks. Both Humphreys and Cousar won first string berths on the All Mid-South team as Well as being named on the All-City team. With eleven lettermen returning Coach Nardo will be looking forward to his first champion- ship team. McCallie. 7: Notre Dame. 2 ln the season's opener the Blue Tornado rolled over Notre Dame's lrish 7 to 2 on Chamberlain Field. The Nardo men made drive after drive only to bog down deep in G-reenie territory. A fumble in the end zone, recovered by Capt. Fanjoy, put Notre Dame out in front 2-O at the half. The second half was nip-and-tuck all the Way until, with a minute and l2 seconds to go, George Morris recovered on the lrish 17. Burton Spraker sprinted 14 yards to the 3, and George Hum- phreys crashed over for the tally. Vaughn Dyer converted and the Blue led 7 to 2. The game and scrapping Blues fought well against a heavier, taster and considerably older team, which didn't beat them nearly so badly as the score indi- cates. Backed by a small, never-say-die cheer- ing section the Blues fought all the Way against the Mid-South Champions. Burton Spraker, Capt. Tom Fanjoy, and George Hum- phreys stood out in the backtield as did Sennett, Fisher, Hays and Taylor in the line. McCallie. 27: S.M.A.. 0 In the next game on Patten Field the Tor- nado deteated Sewanee Military Academy 27 to U. The game was predicted to be a toss-up, but McCallie took over from the opening gun. George Colvin led the scoring parade with two tallies. lim Mallory warmed up for his next week's scoring spree with one mark- er. George Humphreys, smashing fullback and most consistent ground-gainer, scored the other T,D. Tommy Fanjoy played his usual fine game at quarterback. Standouts in the line were Sennett, Alt.-Capt. Taylor, Hays, Morris, Hairston, Cousar, Diamond, Willoch, and Shoftner. McCallie, 42: Riverside, 13 On October 15 the Blues tangled with Riverside at Patten Field and came out on top, 42-13. Riverside scored at the very first and very last of the game, but it was all Mc- Callie in between. lim Mallory sprinted across the double stripes three times. Tommy Fan- joy tallied on a quarterback sneak, as did Humphreys and Colvin on short runs. Mc- Callie's last score came when Sparky Watts pitched a long pass to Vaughn Dyer in the end zone. McCallie. 7: Castle Heights, 27 A strong Tiger eleven repulsed all Blue scoring efforts except a forty-yard run by Burton Spraker in the second quarter. That run, the only bright spot of the night for the Tornado, was the result of a freak pass in- tended for Sennett, intercepted by a Heights player, fumbled, and ultimately taken by Spraker before it hit the ground. Taking ad- vantage of every break, Castle Heights re- paid McCallie for the 7 to 6 upset last year. McCallie. 52: Culver. 12 The Blue 'l'ornado's Homecoming proved a great success when Coach john Nardo's fighting football squad smashed the Culver Oliver Twist. The blue-clad Tornado Went Wild on the frozen field after the first half by scoring 20 points in both remaining periods of the game. George Humphreys made the first tally of the game, but Dyer's try for the point was blocked. Soon after the score, the Culver Flying Squadron took the ball for the tying touchdown, which came as a re- sult of a Blue fumble on the 34 yard-stripe. Their point was also no good! ln the last play of the first half, George Colvin jumped into the air with a 30-yard pass to end Bill Sennett. The Alcoa, Tennessee, youngster was only one of four receivers, the other three being Culver boys. Another tally was added by Burt Spraker, and by the end of the third period the score read McCallie 32, Culver 6. Ray Gill, crash- McCa11ie, 18: G.M.A., 21 A well-balanced C.M.A. eleven proved su- perior in the extra-point department to defeat the Tornado, 21 to l8. The game opened with McCallie taking the first scoring opportunity, driving fifty-five yards to pay-dirt, and taking a 6-O lead when Dyer missed the extra point. At the half-time the score was G.M.A. 14, McCallie 6. The Tornado started the third quarter with renewed vitality. They fought the G.M.A. cadets evenly for the first half of the third quarter, the latter half passes began to click and McCallie drove to its second touchdown. Colvin passed eighteen yards to Taylor, and then to Spraker for twenty-one more yards. Humphreys scooted wide on a right end run, and jumped the final would-be tackler to score on a seventeen yard iaunt. The half ended with the score l4 to 6. At the beginning of the second half the spirited Tigers pushed the ball to pay dirt coming within one point of tying the score at 14 to l3. After the ball had exchanged hands several times Sennett intercepted a Darlington pass and raced for the touchdown. Vaughn Dyer again hit his mark putting Mc- Callie ahead 2l to l3. Darlington's shitty scat backs pushed the score to 2l to 2U on a 60 yard drive. Then to further set the Blues on their heels, Darl- ington completed a 35 yard pass at their next possession of the ball to take the lead 26 to 2l. Led by fullback George Humphreys, the Tornado again pushed the ball over for the fourth and final score for the Blues. Vaughn Dyer kicked the extra point, making the score 28 to 26. ln the closing minutes a Darlington drive Was halted, and time ran out as McCallie had possession of the ball on the Tiger twenty. TOMMY FANIOY All Area, All Mid-South Guard On March 4 in the Davenport Memorial Gymnasium, McCallie's top-seeded Blue Tor- nado bowled over second-seeded Columbia Military Academy with a 45-35 score to take the championship in the twenty-fourth annual Mid-South Association basketball tourney. This capped a successful season in which freshman Coach Russell Tate made his debut as head coach with a big bang. l-lis charges had, including the tournament and all competition, an overall record of 23 vic- tories and only 5 losses. lt could Well be added that none of these occurred when all five of the regular starters Were able to play. ln the straight Mid-South competition the record was Won 20 and lost 2. This gives them an overall total of 1337 points scored all year to the opponents total of l046g this is a per game average of 47.7 points to 36.3 for our opponents. We opened the season against Rossville there before the Christmas Holidays, hand- ing them a 40-30 defeat. After going on the road and defeating Columbia and C.M.A., We entered the Times Cup basketball tourna- ment. We breezed by Notre Dame, and de- feated a highly touted Baylor team by the score of 45-33, the greatest number of points that one school has defeated the other by in recent years. ln the semi-finals we again de- feated Rossville, this time to the tune of 59- 37. ln the finals the team, handicapped by a ruling that states that we couldn't play our one-year transfers from other schools against high schools, dropped a hard-fought battle to Soddy Daisy, 38-52. Chosen on the first two all tournament teams were Fanjoy, Sennett, Paris, and Dyer. Resuming the regular season's play, the Blues defeated Rossville again 51-47. Co- captain Vaughn Dyer played his usual high- scoring game, pouring 20 points thru the hoop. The scrapping Tornado fell to a Central team that was destined to go to the semi- finals of the State basketball tournament, by 45-375 co-captains Tommy Fanjoy and Vaughn Dyer both sank 12 points worth of shots. The same two led the scoring in Atlanta the next week when the team put on a show of fancy ball handling to swamp an outclassed G.M.A. team, 56-23. On the way BASKETBALL back they stopped at Darlington to hand a fighting but doomed Tiger team a 43-41 set- back. This game marked Vaughn Dyer's last appearance for a time, as he came down with glandular fever. He was returned to the roster in time for the tournament, however. We next went by T.M.l. in a close one, 42-41. C.M.A. sneaked by us 35-41, and S.M.A. fell to us. An inspired B.G.A. team handed the team a 34-36 setback, but McCallie came back strong to once more outclass G.M.A. to the tune of 52-36. We lost one to a great Central team, 47-65, but again bounced back to defeat Heights 48-28. We then met Baylor for the second time, and with Dyer and Fanjoy scor- ing l7 and 14 and Sennett, Paris, and Hum- phreys controlling the backboard, Baylor was dumped 40-38. Next to fall before the rampag- ing Tornado were T.M.1., Notre Dame, and Darlingtong all of these were defeated by Wide margins, clue to Dyer's and l:'anioy's flashy floor game and unerring accuracy from the court to the basket, and the good all-around play and rebounding of Sennett, Paris, Humphreys, and reserves Nelson Rodes, Bill Dunavent, Bay Gill, and Charley Cousar. We played Baylor on our floor next. Vaughn Dyer, only recently back in uniform, ai if CO-CAPT. VAUGHN DYER All Area, All Mid-South Forward CHAMPIONS led our scoring with l7 points. Bill Sennett, who had before passed the ball off to his teammates even when he had a good shot, showed part of what he could do by hitting the rim for 10 points. Ralph Paris and Tommy Fanjoy came next with 9 and 8 respectively. Although he only scored 3, George Hum- phreys was one of the most valuable men on the floor, constantly taking rebounds from Baylor's towering center. When the noise, hub bub, and just plain good basketball was over, McCallie was the victor, 48-45. After handing Notre Dame a crushing 75-39 defeat, the team entered the Mid-South tournament, which was held in the Davenport Memorial Gymnasium. McCallie drew a bye in the first round of the tournament. ln the quarter-finals we met Castle Heights, 44-19 victor over G.M.A., and handed them a 47-38 defeat. We jumped ahead at the start and led 18-8 at the quarter. They pulled up on us rapidly and at the end of the third period they were behind only 3 points, 36-33. Then the team really poured on the steam, to come out on top, 47-38. Vaughn Dyer was second to Tommy Fanjoy in the scoring department this time, as Tommy paced the team with 15 points and Vaughn was second with 13 points. Ball-hawk George Humphreys had but 5 points scored, but wowed the galleries with his flashy ball-handling and tricky passing. ln the semi-finals the Blue Tornado ran up against Darlington, victor over B.G.A. Darling- ton got out ahead at the opening gun, and led at the halt-Way mark ot the first half at l5-lU. Then the Tornado, With Tommy Fan- joy sinking his old favorite set shots, started to roll. At the half the score stood 22-19 in favor of McCallie. The second half was all McCallie, and when the final horn blew, the score was McCallie 53, Darlington 45. Tommy Fanjoy took scoring honors again with 20 points, closely folowed by Bill Sen- nett with 13. Lyndon Bennett repeated his per- formance by scoring from the same position, and in the same quarter as his lone tally last year. McCallie was host to the Baylor soccer men in the next Mid-South game of the season, As is typical of Baylor-McCallie athletic contests, the game was nip and tuck all the way, The Tornado definitely made the more spirited drives, but it seemed as if luck were against the Blues. The Bed Raiders score came in the second quarter when Baylor was awarded a penalty kick as a result of a foul committed by a McCallie man in the penalty area. The final score was l-O. The following week McCallie journeyed to Asheville, N. C., to play the Asheville School for Boys. Although somewhat hindered by the absence of ineligible players, the scrapping mudmen displayed a fine exhibition of soccer. The Asheville team won the decision with a l-O score, putting the counter through in the last half. McCallie played Darlington on Patten Field and again seemed to have bad luck. The team dominated almost completely during the first and third quarters, and yet was unable to score. The Tigers' score came in the last minutes of the fourth quarter to provide the one to nothing margin that won the game for Darlington. After losing by l-O scores for three consecutive weeks, a very spirited team took the field against Castle SOCCER Heights. The Heights' men were completely outclassed as the first half ended with a score of 4-U for the Blues. Hunter Bell, lim Fowler, lohn Early, and Bill Thompson all stood out in forward line play and each scored dur- ing the period. During the third quarter another goal was scored by lim Shoffner. The final score was 5-O. The following day the Tornado traveled to Rome, Georgia, to engage Darlington in their second game against each other. Hunter Bell broke the tension by heading the ball through in the first minutes of the game. Darlington came back fighting and scored on a long haltback kick. During the second quarter lim Shoff- ner tallied to make the score 2-l as the half ended. Bennett scored from his wing position in the last min- utes of the third guarter. Darlington again launched a spirited drive, and was given a penalty kick for un- necessary roughness on the part of the McCallie team. The game ended as McCallie won by a score of 3-2. In the final match, McCallie undertook to down Baylor on the latter's campus. The Red Raiders had thus far in the season been undefeated, untied and unscored on. Baylor took an early lead of 2-O. However, in the last minute of the first half lim Shoffner scored for the Blue from the center halfback position. ln the fourth quarter lim Fowler tied up the game in scoring from center for- ward. The game ended in a 2-2 deadlock after playing two overtime periods. The Mite soccer team, coached by Houston Patterson broke even in two games with Baylor's Mites, winning the first and losing the second. Burley. 98 EDDIE FISHER Mid-South Champion, 145 Pound Class The McCallie Wrestling team concluded a very suc- cessful season under the supervision of Coach limmy Lyle, coming through the season as the number three team in the Mid-South. The Blues opened their season with Castle Heights in Lebanon. The Bluemen gave a very creditable show- ing, but were overpowered by a somewhat stronger team. The next week McCallie won a decisive victory over the Notre Dame matmen in McCallie's Davenport WRESTLING Memorial Gym. McCallie defeated Notre Dame a second time later in the season in a preliminary match before the Oklahoma AGM, and University of Chattanooga match. The Bluemen then had matches with Sewanee Military Academy and the Freshman team of the University of Chattanooga, winning both handily. ln a dual meet with Baylor, McCallie was defeated by a strong Red Raider team which was later to become Mid-South Champions. The wrestling season was concluded with the Mid- South tournament in which McCallie .emerged third with Baylor winning the tournament and Castle Heights tak- ing runner-up honors, Eddie Fisher, captain of this year's squad, again took a Mid-South title having won the 136 pound title last year and winning the l45 pound title this year. XI G The 1950 McCallie boxing team, led by Co-Captains Buddy Poe and Frank Lewis and coached by Dick Davies, made a very creditable showing for themselves in both Mid-South and city competition, They took part in four dual matches, the Frye tournament, and the Mid-South tournament, Most of the boys were in their first year oi boxing and will re- turn next year making the prospects for next year good. The season opened in the Davenport Memorial Gym- nasium with a dual meet with S.M.A, The Blues won on team points, 6-4, our winners were Pankey, Lewis, Poe, Garrett, Morris, and Helm. ln the Castle Heights meet, the defending champions of the Mid-South defeated the Tornado mittmen decisively, with Tom Pankey and Buddy Poe being our only winners. In a meet with G,M.A., the team drop- ped a decision to the champions-to-be, Poe Christie, and Pankey again winning, Going on a road trip, the Blues Were defeated by St. Andrews, 7'4. The Blue team entered the Frye City boxing tournanientg many of the boys shown individually, Tom Pankey fought well against Central's Hall, a National Golden Gloves finalist. Co-Captain Buddy Poe tcught his way to the finals of the 156 pound class, only to lose a split decision to Central's Salley, George Morris went to the finals of the Heavyweight division, where he dropped a close one to City's Wood. The Tornado closed the season at the Mid-South tourna- ment in Sweetwater. Handicapped by the loss of many of the key men of the year, the team put up a great fight. ln the tourney, Morris and Bill Creech defeated Baylor entrants in the only meeting of boys from the two schools. Morris fought his way to the finals, only to lose on a close de- cision. Although we had no individual champions, we ac- cumulated enough points to get third place. Uncrowned MidfSouth Champion Buddy Poe received a varsity letter in boxing. Receiving minor sports varsity let- ters were Christie, Pankey, Colbert, Linam, Cox, Therrel, Hardcastle, Greene, Lewis, Garrett, Robinson, Morris, Rodg- ers and Rountree, managers, SWIMMING The 1950 McCallie Swimming team captained by lohn Sherrill and coached by Capt. David Cleveland did not win Mid-South honors, but showed steady improvement which should result in a good tank team at McCallie in coming years. The highlight oi a season that saw McCallie drop two dual meets to C.M.A, and one to C.H.M,A, was Cap- tain Sherrill's setting a new school record of l:l0.8 in the 100 yard backstroke. Second Row: Geiger, Callaway, Brannon, White, Sherrill, McDaniel. e-it-4 SOUTHERN PREP AND MID-SOUTH GOLF CHAMPIONS Led by Tommy Langley, who retained his medalist honors in both the Southern Prep and Mid-South di- visions of the Chattanooga Rotary Club meet, and by Carroll Armstrong, who captured medalist honors in the City Prep Tournament, the McCallie gclfers success- fully defended their three titles in both tournaments. In the Rotary meet, Langley, though topped by Gay Brewer of Lexington, Kentucky, who played in the high of 18 holes Armstrong of McCallie and Brantley of Bay' lor were tied for medalist honors with 73's and the two teams were tied with 308. Coach Davis' golfers came through under pressure with Armstrong taking in- dividual honors and the team winning 'oy 5 strokes in a three-hole play-off. ln City Prep League play McCallie finished second to Baylor scoring 41 points to 50 for the Raiders. The . Spraker, Watts, Langley, Coach Davies, Armstrong, McCamy. school division, won the Prep division, setting a new Mid-South record of 221 for the 54 holes, with Arm- strong runner-up with 226. Bill Watts with 237 and Julian McCamy wtih 243 gave McCallie a team aggregate of 927, setting a new Mid-South team record. McCallie retired both the Southern Prep and Mid-South team trophies with their third victory in four years. 1VlcCamy was a member of all the winning teams in 1947, 1949 and 1950. ln the City Prep meet, with Langley out of competi- tion, Burton Spraker took over the fourth spot on the team as the other three moved up a notch, At the end Blues, without Langley, lost two matches to Baylor by decisive margins. ln other league matches McCallie won two each from City, Kirkman and Bed Bank, winning one and tying one with Central, ln other matches McCallie split with Darlington, win- ning 16-2 and losing 6V2-l1V2. The loss broke a long McCallie winning streak of 27 dual matches. In a triangular match McCallie won from S.M,A, and C.M.A. and another triangular match with C.M.A. and T.M.1. was rained out after the first few holes. Armstrong and Spraker return as a nucleus for the 1951 team. IOI McCALLIE'S GOLF MEDALISTS 1950 MID-SOUTH McCallie tennis during the past three years has been excellent, and the three teams have captured two out of three Mid-South Cham- pionships. Coach Bob Wolverton's first year's work with the Varsity squad netted the l95O Mid-South Championship with the closest team ten points behind the pace-set- ters. Throughout the season the Blues won nine matches and tied one with the state cham- pions, Montgomery Bell Academy of Nash- ville. Matches were scheduled during the regular season with Darlington, Baylor, St. Andrews, Sewanee, and Castle Heights as well as matches with the Freshman teams of Georgia Tech and University of Chattanooga. At the conclusion of the season the Mid- South Tournament was held, this year at Se- wanee University. Due to the late arrival of Bell, the B division singles was lost. How- ever, the finals of the 'AH singles and doub- les was an all-McCallie affair. Paris defeated Dunavant in a closely contested match, and Paris and Bell won over Dunavant and Shoff- ner to win the doubles crown. This year the finalists of these two latter divisions are eligible to compete in the National Iunior Tennis Tournament held at Kalamazoo, Mich- igan, so we are expecting great things in tennis for them. Paris Won the trophy for the outstanding man at the tournament and also the sports- manship tennis trophy given at McCallie. The Tornado Won the Mid-South team cham- pionship for the seventh time in the last eleven years, and over the same span have lost the City title only once. BASEBALL The l950 Tornado baseball team, though unable to retain top honors in the Eastern division of the Mid- South, again finished on the right side of the ledger with 7 Wins and 6 defeats under the leadership of Captain George Humphreys and Alternate Captain Gordon Sisk. Under Coach Dave Spencer, who took over the coach- Coach Dave Spencer frightj with his two assistants, B, I. Saunders fleftl and Vaughn Dyer. inq duties, assisted by Coach B. I, Saunders and Vaughn Dyer who had played for four years and could not compete, McCallie displayed one of the hardest hitting outfits to represent the Blue in recent years. Seven lettermen, outiielders Milton Craiq and Lyndon Bennett, infielders Bill Creech and Diehl Sluss, catchers George Humphreys and Pat Hairston and Gordon Sisk on the mound formed the nucleus with Humphreys shifted irorn behind the plate because oi a shoulder injury. Humphreys proved his versatility by playing CAPTAIN GEORGE HUMPHREYS Second Base and Outfield IO4 fine ball in both outfield and infield. Iimmy Ensign and Bob Whittington in the outlield, Bill Sennett and Wins- ton Wright around the keystone, and Ben lones and Frank Lewis, pitchers, rounded out the thirteen players to win letters with assistant Coach Dyer and managers lim Bradley and Don Thomas also earning monograms. I 06 Coach Russell Tate's track charges developed from a mediocre season to take second place in the annual Mid-South Track Meet held at Emory University in At- lanta. Starting the season with Very few returned letter- men and largely inexperienced boys, the Blue combine Worked to a late-season peak and cinched a second in the conference meet. Without a few tough breaks they could very easily have won the meet. The Blue cindermen journeyed to Atlanta for a dual meet with G.M.A. less than a week after the Spring holidays. ln a meet run off in cold and rain, the times were surprisingly good. Alt.-Captain Fred Taylor sprinted the lUU-yard dash in lO.3 to cop that event for the Tornado. Captain Ted Lazenby of McCallie captured a first in the 220, as did lack Cole in the 440. lim Mal- lory paced the 880 in 2:09, an excellent early-season time, to win that event. ln the field events Ray Daley was the Blue standout, taking firsts in both the broad jump and the javelin, I-le was the high-point man of the afternoon, having ll points. Bill Thompson, Ken Schneider, Tommy Letsinger, Ray Gill, and Thornton Cole added valuable second place points to the Blue cause. The issue Was in doubt up until the last jump in the broad jump, in which G.M.A. took second place and thus the meet to set McCallie on the small ,end of a close 6468 score. The Tornado tracksters next took part in the Baylor Relays, in which they placed fourth. The Tornado 880 relay team, composed oi Fred Taylor, lack Cole, Ted Lazenby, and George Colvin, placed third and Fred Taylor was a close second to Darlington's Wood in the 100 yard dash. George Dowdy and Ray Gill placed in the discus and shot put respectively, as did Bill Thomp- son in the high hurdles. The 440 relay team, composed of Fred Taylor, Ted Lazenby, lack Cole, and George Colvin, placed third behind Baylor and Darlington, The high hurdle shuttle-relay team, composed of lohn Thorne, Bill Slack, Polk Williams, and Ashton Therrel, placed fourth. In the medley relay, the Blue team of Finis St. Iohn, lim Mallory, Thornton Cole, and Ken Schneider, placed third in their event, The Blue tracks- ters saved the best until the last of the day. The mile relay team of lim Mallory, Ted Lazenby, lack Cole, and Finis St. Iohn, ran away with their event, leading the nearest team to them by many yards. ln the final score, McCallie Was fourth behind Baylor, Darlington, and T.M.l. Fred Taylor showed his heels to the Raiders' Bill Teas to win a fast' hundred to the tune of 10.2, ln the open- ing events, Ray Gill and john Pataky placed close seconds in the shot and pole vault respectively. The day's most thrilling event was the mile run, in which McCallie's Ken Schneider nipped Bay1or's highly touted George Harrison at the tape in the fast time of 4:55.8. Ted Lazenby and lack Cole got third and second in the 440 dash. john Thorne and Bruce Cleveland placed one- two in the 220 low hurdles. George Dowdy won the discus with a mighty heave of 105 feet and five inches. jim Mallory and Finis St. john finished one-two in the 880 run Without being pushed. Taylor and Lazenby took second and third in the 220 yard dash. McCallie took the 880 relay in 1:35.1, using a team composed of lack Cole, Ted Lazenby, George Colvin, and Fred Taylor. However, Baylor took the meet, 63921 to SBV4, thanks to a sweep in the javelin, made possible When Ray Daley, capturer of second place in the broad jump, threw his arm out of place in the trials. This was the first time in recent years that McCallie has lost to Baylor on our track, but it was also the first time in two years we had come so close to beating Baylor. The Blue runners next journeyed to Sweetwater to meet the T.M.l, track combine. Bill Thompson started the day off right by capturing the high hurdles. Dowdy and Gill got second and third in the shot, as did Taylor and Colvin in the 100 yard dash. Ken Schneider won the mile without being pushed. lack Cole and Ted Lazenby finished one-two in the 440 dash, as did lim Mallory and Finis St, john in the 880 run. Fred Taylor took ther 200 dash, an event substituted for the 220 because of the short track, in the fast time of 20.5. Bruce Cleveland took second in the low hurdles, as did Ray Daley in the broad jump. The McCallie team composed of Ted Lazenby, lack Cole, Thornton Cole, and Fred Taylor won that event. T.M.l.'s strength in the field .events tipped the meet to their way in the final score, it being 66-56. The Tornado tracksters next met Darlington on our oval. Bill Thompson again got the team off to a fast start by winning the high hurdles in the fast time of 16.6. Ray Gill won the shot with an effort of 42 feet 9 inches, with George Dowdy taking third, McCallie swept the pole vault, with Ray Daley and john Pataky tying for first and Redford Trammell taking second. The best performance of the day was that of Fred Taylor in the 100 yard dash. He vanquished Wood of Darlington, the Baylor Relays champion, in the extremely fast time of 10.0 seconds. McCallie's trio of Daley, George Humphreys, and lohn Early swept the broad jump. ln their second meeting of the day, Fred Taylor again defeated VV'ood to take the 220 in the fast time of 23.0 seconds. Tommy Letsinger and Iohn Pataky added points to the Blue cause by taking second and third in the javelin. The last event of the day, the 880 relay, was also the most thrilling, lt was nip and tuck all of the way into the last exchange box, where anchor man Wood of Darlington had a slight lead over Fred Taylor. Coming from behind, Fred passed him at the tape pulling away, to give the Blue team of George Colvin, lack Cole, Ted Lazenby, and Fred Taylor a victory in the fast time of l:34.5, The final score was 8436 to 37 Vs, McCallie's first dual meet win of the sea- son. The Tornado tracksters finished out the season in the Mid-South meet held this year ai Emory University in Atlanta. Traveling into the conference meet with a dual meet record of won one and lost three, no one accorded the Blue aggregation much of a chance. The team didn't appear to be a major threat on the day on which the qualifying events were run, but they placed second to Baylor in the 880 relay, the only final event of the day. The team was composed of Ted Lazenby, George Colvin, lack Cole, and Fred Taylor. ln the finals, Ray Daley took second in the pole vault, and jack Cole was third in the 440 dash. The big triumph of the day was that of Fred Taylor in the l00 yard dash. He defeated Wood of Darlington and Teas of Baylor, avowed to be some of the best sprint men that have been in the conference. His competent leadership has been responsible for the tine record ot the McCallie Regiment. This year Colonel Dunlap has had as his assistant Major Robert M. Proctor, U. S. Army, retired. At the end of his sophomore year, Iohn was decorated With the Linus Llewellyn Award for the nearest cadet in the battalion. With this honor also came the promotion to the rank of sergeant, At the final parade, the end of Iohn's junior year, he was promoted to the ranlc of major, to be commander of the second battalionj john was also presented with the award for the best drilled cadet in Company E.
