'-'is -- 5? 1 V H f 4 , , X THE PENNANT, 1929 - ', A Challenge to Youth the had ever seen The workmen had just dug it out standing erect in t e 'L cellar they were excavating under the home of the little boys father, the Founder of The McCallie School. Still clinging about the gruesome figure of a young man was the remnant of an old leather belt. Distinctly visible on the metal buckle were the three letters U. S. A. It was on the old battlefield of Missionary -Ridge long before on a night in Sep- tember, I863, the axes had rung all through the dark hours felling the trees. They had been thrown down the slope against the impending attack of the Federal Army under Grant. No doubt this very boyihad made the brave rush up the Ridge against the Qmfederate lines on top. He had given up his life. He had fallen into one of the deep ditches seaming the Ridge. He was overlooked when the bodies were gathered up the next day and had finally been completely buried by the accumulations of many years. I was the small boy. I shall never forget my father's words: He was a brave lad. He gave his life for his country. He has a right to this resting place. Wall him back into his grave until the resurrection day. So the Workman put the skeleton be- hind the stone wall that was built. A lad who gave his life for his country is built into the foundations of the McCallie School. This true fact is a challenge to McCallie boys to give their lives to their country SMALL BOY, witli wondering eyes stood looking upon the first skeleton H in a new but just as true a way as did the youth so long ago. Today real men are ' Q Q needed as never before in the history of our country. I mean the kind of men that - f . A are willing to sacrifice all on the altar of right, unafraid of the face of man. Our t o ,, ' country faces as great disaster as faced it in the sixties. Wealth, luxury, laxness of ' fi Q6 control, dishonesty, crime, irreverence, all are undermining constitutional government. ,aw ly Z Where are the volunteers to answer the call of country, as did the lad of the sixties? Shall the old Volunteer State fail her country now? Never! McCallie boys will V11 0 ' answer this call. X 'KX 4 F it 000 i Q . b f 15? !g V-4 f i N X I X ,XX X hx- I, i gc law, fx - 'ta' 7: f . is .
