First row: Paganelli, Daly, Arneth, Mills, Porres, Ullman, Rae, Mr. Doriani Second row: Engler, Greenwald, Koppel, Moore, Wolfson, Hartogs Third row: Yin, Ross, Lambert, Ressmeyer, Bobrovsky Fourth row: Hawkins, Price, Hyden, Liggett The booters opened up the season with a 2-l victory over Elizabeth lrwin. Captain Dave Mills scored both goals. Barnard was McBurn- ey's second victim. Mike l-lartogs scored two goals and Ted Koppel added one. McBurney's first defeat was suffered at the hands of Birch Walthen, l-G. The hooters snapped back and defeated Columbia Grammar. Mike Hartogs scored the only goal of the contest. Concordia fell to McBurney, 4-O. Koppel scored twice and Mills and Moore scored one each. New Lincoln caused McBurney's second defeat. The team finished out its league schedule with a l-O win over Garden Country Day. Koppel provided the winning margin. This victory put Mcburney in third place ln the last week of the season McBurney was hit by a man power shortage. Nevertheless, the booters took on their three toughest opponents, Fieldston, Kew Forest, and Staten lsland Acad- emy. All three games resulted in losses. Field- ston edged McBurney 3-2. Mills and Rae scored in a losing cause. The team lost its last two games by identical 2-O scores, The backbone of the soccer team was its defense which allowed an average of only one goal per game. l-Xrneth, Greenwald, Lambert, Porres Daly, Ullman, and Maloof composed Mc- Burney's powerful backline. Four boys made the All Scholastic Soccer Squad. Koppel, Mills and Porres made the first team. Arneth was placed on the second hxfwvn 73595975.11

The two teams battled on even terms for four periods with the final score a 31-31 tie. Pete Eichhorn and Doug McCartney scored two touchdowns each while Will Caterson scored one. The second game against arch-rival Mont- clair resulted in a heart-breaking loss for Mc- Burney. The gridders were unable to get a smooth offense going and even though the defense was good, lost 20-12. Pete Eichhorn and Will Caterson each scored one touchdown for the offense while Fred Pivlcc and Owen Gavi- gan starred on defense, Against Oakland, the gridders third op- ponent, the offense was sensational. McBurney scored six touchdowns while allowing only four and won 40-25. Fred Pivlco, Ken Fielder, Gwen Gavigan, and Will Caterson were tre- mendous on defense while lohn McGovern and Doug McCartney with two touchdowns each and Pete Eichhorn and lohn Sloss with one led the offense. This was it. The final game of the year against Collegiate. The gridders were fired up for this one and blasted Collegiate into sub- mission. The final score was 59-14. McBurney's 59 points in this game set a new school record for points scored in one game. Doug McCartney scored four touchdowns, Pete Eichhorn and lohn Sloss scored two each and lohn McGovern ctdded one.
