AC DE IC As the year started everyone realized that the race for Academic honors would be fought between the seniors and the sophomores. The seniors jumped ahead in the Spelling Contest when Ray Paganelli and leremy Griffith finish- ed one and two. On the stage this battle ended in a tie between the two boysp not until the third playoff was Ray declared the winner. Bruce Nims, a sophomore, finished third. ln the Hobby Talks, Richard Slifka narrowly won from Adam Heyman. The winner demonstrated a home made burglar alarm working on the electric eye. Charles Thiel placed third with a humorous talk on finger painting. The sopho- mores walked away with the Vocabulary Con- test, racking up over thirty points and going into the lead. Bruce Nims won this one for the second year in a rowp he must have a vocab- ulary. Myron Lounsbury won the Short Story contest with a tale of an old derelict trying to find a place in society. leremy Griffith placed second - his third second of the year. Ted Koppel won the Book Mart, talking on a volume about the Nazi atrocities. Bruce Nims came in second, speaking on his favorite topic, the Civil War. Iohn Brent won the Oratorical Contest with an impassoned harangue against the abuses of television as a medium for advertis- ing. The Declamation Contest found Kenny Bleeth winning for the second year in a row. Adam Heyman won a second place, and Ruffen Cotton a third.
