Last ill and Testament Having lost our sanity and most ot our ma- terial possessions during the past tour years at McBurney, we e the Class ot l956 - have very little tc bequeath to our successors. How- ever, the spirit ot generosity absorbed from our teachers impels us to make the following bequests: Doug McCartney leaves his trog kick to the science department to further their study of evolution, Mike Abrahams donates his smile, his jokes, his deck of cards, and his ties to Roger What a delightful boy Wheeler, Paul Arneth leaves his red hair-dye to Mr. Hardenbergh, Rod Nash hands the Student Council back to Mr. Bowman. who will now have to go it alone, lack Fields bequeaths his Brooks Brothers labels and Robert Hall charge-a-plate to Rich- ard Price, We present our gift - whatever it may be e to everyone but lonathan Kapp, who would never let us play with the recorder donated by the boys of '55, Bruce Brown gladly wills his blush to Steve Kroll. Steve Heyman leaves the blazers to our grandchildren, Peter Greenwald donates his trombone to any one who can play it, Bow Lum Lee leaves the care ot Mr. Deme to Robert Yin We present to all who can reach that high a box ot Brillo to keep the nose ot Robert Ross McBuiney bright and shiny, For Mr. Leonards benefit we add an eighth day to the week, Andy Ullman sends his horse to the glue factory, Mickey Shapiro leaves Gordon Young sleep- ing in the Chem laboratory, To anyone who can drown out Pete Green- wald's trombone, Ray Paganelli leaves his union card. So we pass on to the great beyond of college lite, leaving these things but taking with us that much more precious article - knowledge. Signed and sealed, Class of '56 FRESHM 1952 Believe it or not, this is the Class of '55 The only difference is that these pictures were taken in 1952. Do they look better or worse? Seems to me that quite a few lost some weight during their four years at hard labor in Mc- Burney. That fellow sitting at the left-hand corner of the picture is none other than Bruce Brown. Can't say we thought then that Bruce would be editor of the Lamp and Laurel. Next to Bruce is Swingin' Eric Deutsch. Eric swung ahead of the rest of us and graduated in three years. The big one right in the middle is our boy, Flesh Calise. Seems Bill is still smiling. Seated on the end is Mike Abrahams. I think Mike is trying to outstare the camera. Willy Caterson is the crew-cut in the back row. l-le's grown a little since then, hasn't he? The man with the broad shoulders next to Will is the 'Canarsie Kid , Ben DuBose. Beneath Bobert Boss McBurney, we find Pete Eichhorn. Pete has become quite an athlete, with letters in swimming, football, and track. That's change- less Alex Bobrovsky in the back row. The fel- low with the arrogant look is lack Fields. lack made a name for himself as editor of the Mc- Burneian. Tricky Dick Bier is next to lack. A few years later, Dick became a fine tennis player 'and leader of the Yorkville Squad. That beefy guy in the right corner is Bed Arneth, who's a little slimmer now. Page 41 FRESHM II 1952 This is another Senior Class four years be- fore. Herbe Kempe is sitting right up front. Herb went to M.l.T. three years later, but he looks like a typical freshman here. Next to Herb is Leon Lantzounis, who's still smiling, although no one has been able to figure out Leon's sense of humor. We've forgotten that fellow next to Leon, but who could forget the fellow in the center? That's Doug McCartney, our All-American swimmer. Next to Doug is Pete Greenwald. Pete looks as if he was just caught with his hand in the cookie jar. The middle row holds a lot of faces that are gone now. However, that's George Littman with a smile straight from the rogue's gallery. Bob Harriman is in the center of the middle row. I think Bob must have stopped eating. Leonard lompulski is next to Bob. That big smile could only mean that Leonard has finally outwitted Mr. Bowman. Bob Greco is at the rear with Bobert Ross McBurney glaring over his should- er. Mr. Deme's right-hand man, Ho Hum Lee, comes next. Many of the boys in this picture are no longer at McBurney, but someone al- ways seems to fill the empty places, cmd the class is still at sixty boys. Page 42 FRESHM N III 1952 He-re's more Frosh of '52, alias Seniors of 55. Those boyish faces now look rnorelike rnen. Can't recall who that is sitting in the left corner, but we know thats lohri Sloss up in front. lohrfs sittmg here giving the camera a big smne. The fellow with the fancy vest is Fred Pivko, now the last of the fazfnous Ben-Yettes . Charley Thiel is still wearing that same tie that he has on in this picture. Looking like the be fore of a Toni Perrnanetnt ad, we find the future president of Student Council, Bill Rose. The boy on the left is Herb Zapf. Herb's gotten a lot thinner frorn all the swirnrning he does, and I predict he'll be the next Charles Atlas. Right in he middle, always srnilirig, is Dave Mills. Dave looks good enough to make the All-City Soccer Team right there. The fellow llfim at the end of the row with the drearny look is Rod Nash., Wonder if the dream is about a girl? Carl Reinhardt starts the top row. He's really got a sharp tie there. Thats Gordie Young next to Carl. Where's the DA. haircut? Mickey Shapiro has worked so hard in four years that he has gotten a lot thinner. That guy behind Mickey just likes to have his picture taken. He doesn't look like a frosh to rne. Wally Steven- son is watching something out of the comer of his eye. That couldrft be a girl, could it, Wally? Roberto Rosenberg, the Liberace of our class, is in Venzuela training for a career as a con- cert piainist. This completes the Class of '56. Any resemblance to persons living or dead is purely coincidental. K Page 43 SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER Summer ends three days early . . . we re- turn to McBurney on September 18. The mem- bers of the faculty smile upon us, assuring us that we are the best senior class ever. The smell of liniment permeates the halls as the athletes return from conditioning camp. Mike Abrahams looks over the new seniors to see if there is anyone among them who might chal- lenge his academic rating . . . there is no threat. Field Day is rained out, cheating the boys of their chance to beat the faculty at base- ball . . . Ties and jackets are compulsory again . . . what weird color combinations! Rumor has it that Panorama, defunct for two years, may be published again. The soccer team starts the season with a series of wins . . . the foot- ball players do not fare so well. NOVEMBER Senior privileges are granted for the first time in many years. Steve Heyman begins to take orders for McBurney jackets . . . it is reported that they will be worn by the glee club at the Christmas concert. Reports reach home . . . don't you remember your own youth, Dad? The first dance is a success. A yearbook staff is collected . . . Andy Ullman becomes business manager on condition that his horse be made his assistant. Mr. Yeh, dis- covering that his advanced algebra class can't think in English, writes Think in Chinese on the front wall of 304 . . . marks immediately im- prove. The little men in green crepe defeat the sophs in the annual Freshman Day games. SE IOR DECEMBER The dramatic club performs Dickens' Christ- mas Carol with Messrs. Scudder, Hardenbergh, and Weeks in the caste . . . plus numerous young ladies . . . as a result Dr. Ouinn has many applications for parts in the senior play. Mr. Deme collects McCartney, Bill Rose, Cater- son and company and starts them splashing in the pool every afternoon from three till four. Some seniors want to apply to Big Ten Uni- versity . . . why not? isn't Big Ten football the best in the country? Christmas vacation starts early for many students . . . after all they couldn't permit their parents to go to Florida without proper protection. IANUARY The swimming team, as everyone expected, runs away with the dual meets, even winning from City College freshmen . The basketball players are not quite as successful. The Third Father and Son Banquet is eaten . . . Rod Nash is the only senior present, the others are sleep- ing up for the College Boards the next day . . . Rod's father is the speaker of the evening. Mills, Parr, Brown, and Arneth travel to col- leges for interviews. Slifka wins the Hobby Talks with a homemade burglar alarm. The swimming team spends a weekend at Brown, coming in third in the first invitation tourney of the year. Page 44 HI-LITES FEBRUARY College Boards marks arrive . . . the class average in verbals is 590. Nash and Cox are elected president and vice-president. All is peace at the Packer dance. After eight years of patient effort, McBurney acquires a Drivers Education car. The merman beat Peekskill at Colgate to become state champs . . . the med- ley relay team sets a new meet mark at Prince- ton. The basketball team wins three straight. The first of the college acceptances come in . . . Brown to Columbia, Mills to Swarthmore, and Florence to Oklahoma. MARCH The natators win the Westchester and A.A.- P.S. meets by large margins . . . never has McBurney produced such a team. Parents- Alumni Night draws a huge crowd. The Ninth Grade basketball team wins the district cham- pionship but loses in the borough. Minoia gives Colgate the once over. Caterson and Gavigan invade the Emma Willard School for girls. Mr. Leonard has a nervous breakdown when Sloss gets behind the controls of the new car. Now and then Steve Heyman brings up the subject of the blazers. Rumor has it that the McBurney schedule is going to be revised, eliminating the noon general education periods. APRIL Young, Snyder, and Leffler are seen in the streets appropriating new hub caps for McBurn- ey's pet Chevrolet. The hockey team loses the Stanley Cup by default . . . no ice in the swimming pool. Trial by fury and Down in the Valley are howling successes. leremie Griffith creates the missing link in the lab . . . the aver- age l.Q. of the school rises. McCartney, Rose, Eichhorn -even Caterson and Zapf swim their way into college. Acceptances pour in so fast that the office has trouble keeping the seniors posted. Spring fever hits the class, but no one seems to mind except the baseball, track, tennis, and golf coaches. MAY AND IUNE The Maypole Dance is a huge success . . . so is the May Day Parade. The lunior-Senior Prom at the N.Y.A.C. enlivens things for a few days. The dramatists present The Hasty Heart. Recognition Day . . . he who hasn't given the faculty some reason for recognizing him has certainly wasted his year. Clubs Banquet . . . more awards . . . also big, black cigars. Mr. Leonard leaves for Europe . . . he wants to pick up some driving pointers from the taxi men of Paris. Graduation comes at last. Old seniors never die, they just pass! Speakers CBURNEY FORE ER When the task is hard and the day is long, Then watch McBurney fight. When the luclc's all wrong and our strength 'most g And the foemen are cheery and bright, Then our rooters roar: We must score once more, And We rise up and smite them in our might, On McBurney! Play the game all together, And their banner is ours tonight. When the last long rays of the setting sun Bafhe the field in a golden light, When the day is done and the victory won And the hearts of McBurney are bright, Then a hundred voices rise in song And we cheer for the dear old Green and White: Oh, McBurney, may she live forever, And may victory crown each fight. When the last glad day of the long' bright years l-las gone and the parting comes, When we say farewell 'mid the ringing Cheers Of the fellows who Call us their chums. Then our loyal hearts will be linked with yours And the hopes of our class will follow you: Dear McBurney, may she live forever, And forever her sons be true. Separated as it is from the Middle and Upper Schools, with its own principal and faculty, many of the older students do not realize the extent of the activi- ties centered around the Third Floor Foyer. Day after day these activities build up, finding expression in the big days of the Lower School year. The first of these events is the Christmas con- cert. Most of the members of the choir are Lower School boys. How flat the Christmas carols would sound without the sopranos and altosl The second is the dramatic night. This year it was held on March 22 and 23, Mr. Ball present- ing Six Who Pass while the Lentils Boil and Aria da Capo and Mr. Rock conducting the Broolyri Baseball Cantata. Parents-Alumni Night found over a hundred fathers and mothers look- ing at their sons' exhibits and watching them at play in the gyms and the pools. Trips were made at regular intervals - to the Planetarium, museums and industrial plants. Athletically the boys received a great deal of attention. The playing fields of Central Park, the gyms and the pools were used freely. ln- tramural competition added zest to the games - the four classes organizing teams to vie with one another. A color contest ended each term with the winning team having its name inscrib- ed cn a wall plaque. William Rose and Roderick Nash were installed as president and vice-presi- dent immediately after the beginning of the fall term, Their first project, Field Day, was well planned. No fault of theirs that a hurricane cancelled the outing. The Social Affairs Come mittee, headed by lack Fields and Dick Stoeltz- ing sponsored two dances, the Halloween Prom and the Stevens Basketball Game and Dance. As usual the council took charge of raising a Christmas fund for the non-professional staff of the school. Chapel services were organized on a more popular basis, and attendance show- ed immediate improvement. President - William Rose Vice-president - Roderick Nash Secretary - Charles Wolfson Senior I Sophomore II Edward Cox Bruce Nims Roderick Nash and Edward Cox were elect- ed president and vice-president, soon after the second term began. Their first task was the organization of Parents-Alumni Night, which drew its usual overflow crowd on March 2. A Spring Field Day, to give the seniors a chance to play the faculty at baseball, is being planned for May. Gf the spring dances, the one with Bentley School and the Spring Prom were the most successful. In the field of citizenship, most of the councils efforts were directed toward making the Clean-up Drive a success. Dave Mills and lohn Sloss kept the school informed on the progress of the championship swimming team, the speedy soccer squad, and the other teams. During the year the McBurney Ditto was revital- ized under the direction of Bruce Nims, Bob Yin, and Bob Wasserman. They brought out those on-the-spot extras needed to keep the student body informed of current happenings. No newspaper is complete without picturesg Tony Koestler handled this department very well. Bay Paganelli, Pete Greenwald, and Dave Dworsky took care of the humor, that indispens- able section of a prep school paper. Finally, behind all of the staffs efforts was the faculty adviser, Mr. Leonard, ready to help with advice and encouragement. To next year's staff, the class of '56 is leaving a healthy newspaper. Vg 4 Panorama Parent -Alumni For years Panorama, McBurney's literary magazine, has suffered eclipse. Not since the days of William Walter and Elward Bressett has the magazines staff been able to solve the problems of production. This year a com- petent staff led by Mike Abrahams, wrestled with many difficulties and finally produced an issue, the first to be published in almost two years. The students enjoyed the magazine, which contained many stories, articles, and features, one of the most prominent being the winning story of the Short Story Contest. Assisting Mike Abrahams in the production of the paper were Alfred Parr, Bruce Brown, lack Fields, Steve Heyman, Charles Thiel, Lee Denenberg, and Steven Kroll. Mr. Flannery was the faculty adviser while Mr. Martens helped with the art work. As the yearbook is going to press, the editors of Panorama are planning a spring issue en- titled The McBurney Iester . Many problems still remain to be solved, but the staff is con- quering each as it arises. ight Following tradition, flocks of eager, bright- eyed parents swarmed to McBurney on the night of March 2 to View the accomplishments of their offspring. This event is offered to the parents each year in order that they may ac- quire a faint idea of what their sons are ac- complishing in the fields of science, art, and athletics. This year, as always, unrelenting young hands steered friends and relatives from one room to another pointing with pride to exhibits of their own making, with even greater pride to the swimming team, which gave a much appreciated demonstration of its prowess, and with admiration at the alumni who returned to play basketball. This year's Alumni-Varsity game was particularly thrilling, ending in a 42-42 tie, the first in the series. A first among the exhibits was one staged by the members of the Drivers' Education Course. Many parents took the reaction tests, some quite dismayed by their low scores. As usual the evening ended with dancing in the gymnasium. F or the adult parts in Dickens' Christmas Carol, Dr. Quinn en- listed the services of Mrs. Blackstone, Mrs. Liron, Mr. Scudder, Mr. l-lardenbergh, and Mr. Weeks. For the senior play, Suzanne d'Autremont was borrowed from the Brearly School for Girls. At Colgate McBurney won by a single point when the same free style relay team came through in grand style. That defeat swamped Peekskill. ln the Westchester championships McBurney doubled their point score. The second rivalry was personal, between Doug McCartney and Fieldston's Steve Kurtin in the 100 yard breaststroke. McCartney won this event in 1.05.- 5, a prep school record. The team is losing its stars, but this year's lesser lights look as if they will keep McBurney near the top of the swimming heap for some years to come. The second game against arch-rival Mont- clair resulted in a heart-breaking loss for Mc- Burney. The gridders were unable to get a smooth offense going and even though the defense was good, lost 20-12. Pete Eichhorn and Will Caterson each scored one touchdown for the offense while Fred Pivlcc and Owen Gavi- gan starred on defense, Against Oakland, the gridders third op- ponent, the offense was sensational. McBurney scored six touchdowns while allowing only four and won 40-25. Fred Pivlco, Ken Fielder, Gwen Gavigan, and Will Caterson were tre- mendous on defense while lohn McGovern and Doug McCartney with two touchdowns each and Pete Eichhorn and lohn Sloss with one led the offense. This was it. The final game of the year against Collegiate. The gridders were fired up for this one and blasted Collegiate into sub- mission. The final score was 59-14. Twenty-one boys gave up their after- noons to help the underprivileged children on the Upper East Side, serving in five different play centers under the guidance of experienced adult leaders. The McBurney boys helped with arts and crafts, games, and story hours, and in return received valuable experience in lead- ership, initiative, and responsibility. Richard Bier, Walter Liggett, Ray Paganelli, and Charles Thiel, the Mc- Burney delegates, profited greatly from the lec- tures, the group discussions, and the chance to exchange ideas With students from other schools. Since Buck Hills Fall Inn is one of the principal Pocono Mountain resorts, the boys iztlso enjoyed the winter sports and the social i e. McBurney has sent students to the confer- ence ever since its first meeting. The reports brought back to the school have showed how deeply the meetings have affected all the par- ticipants. Service Council Richard Bier Peter Greenwald Vincent Ferragamo Steven l-leyman Chapel One oi the growing activities oi McBurney is the weekly non-sectar- ian chapel service. This term the at- tendance has increased noticeably. Services are held every Thursday at noon, the order of worship includ- ing a reading from the Bible, two hymns, and a talk by a guest speak- er. Mr. Chamberlin, headmaster, and Mr. Rock, music leader, are the fac- ulty sponsorsg Richard Stoeltzing, Richard Hemmings, and William Rose are the student leaders. Other boys have participated as speakers. Since McBurney is a branch of the Y.M.C.A., these weekly chapel ser- vices assume a great importance in the lives ot the students. This worship and the talks by visiting clergymen, a regular feature of the assembly program, represent the important re- ligious section ot the curriculum. lohn Ressmeyer Library Aides Alexander Bobrovsky Peter Greenwald Lewis Givnei MYTOH I-OU1'1Sb1l1'Y Barry Gordon Vincent Mercogliano Bruce Ggrdgn l:i1ChCITCl Price Page 99 fuss Q f Office Boys Sandy Aitken Alexis Bell Steven Butterman Elliot Bernstein Nicholas Calise Rutfen Cotton Ted Daniels Richard DiPrima David Dworsky William Gerberding lohn Hawkins Richard Hemmings Alan lacobs Leonard lompulsky Robert Kastin Harold Kerrigan George Liggett Myron Lounsbury Douglas McCartney Ray Paganelli George Sachs Michael Smither Peter Smither Robert Wasserman Projection Squad President c cccc D ,cklohn Ressmeyer Vice-president cc- ,,...cc. -Eric Koch Secretary ..c...cc 7 ...cc..
