Bob was highest scorer on the team, His aeeurate out-of-bound punts often kept McBride on top. Charley Kohler, played on the varsity for three years which is tribute enough to his ability. As center and end Charlie was always in there just when needed. He enjoyed intercept- ing passes. Bern Pepper, fully deserved the All- Prep and All-District honors for his stubborn defensive work for the Irish. He was co-Captain and played on the varsity for four years. jack Huber, one of the stalwarts of the McBride forward wall, was ever ready with his power and drive for the Mick cause. Jacks fine spirit more than once spurred the team on to greater efforts. Red O'Brien, is one of those ever dependable players who goes about his duty unheralded by the Crowd but nevertheless a necessary part for the success of the team. Jim saw duty and earned his letter at end and as guard. Anthony Webster, suffered a broken eollarbone on the eve of the first game but his determination returned him rather miraculously to the lint-- up in four weeks. Vnexeelled afoot. he played an important role as end in the Irish offense. Emmet Branson, otherwise quiet and retiring, had plenty of spark and drive as guard on the football team. Though only a Junior, he has com- pleted his last season in football. Jim Mohan, earned his letter as een- ter in the Mick's lineg his work both on defense and offense was a bright feature in every game. Jim could always be eounted on to give his cheerful support to the team. Dick O'Dunnell, a colorful senior in IllOI't-' ways than one, starred as end for the team. Vl'hen a ball earrier tried Dick's side of the line he was in for a battle and in most. cases Dick was the winner. Bill Whitey Tate, passer deluxe and co-Captain, a member of last year's all-Star line, moved to the backfield this season and merited all-Prep hon- ors as halfbaek. Bob Hembrock, was one of those com- petent substitutes who can bolster a team in power and spirit. Bob was always ready for the oerasion and his ability at the end position won him a major letter. Bro. Fred Weisbruch, S.M. To load a net squad to state suprem- acy is a most desirable honorg but to take two such titles in as many years is a reward of superior coach- ing: and training. Brother Fred en- joys this distinction and yet few would know it. for he is content to do his job and have the players share the honors, Under his coaching. Mc- Bride has Won the Prep Tennis Cham- pionship for the last four years. Bro. George Scherrer, S.M. Champ basketball squads and Bro- ther George are practically synony- mous words. In '38 and '39 his C teams completely dominated the Prep League, and this year he coached the B team to an undefeated season in league competition. Brother George also coached Junior 'track for two years and the Senior track this spring. Just as valuable was all the score keeping, publicity, and managing in- tramural sports that he added to his work. Bro. Otto Weisbruch, S.lVI. Thanks to the experience and able coaching of Brother Otto, the Mc- Bride B football squad found them- selves sitting on top of competition at the end of the season. More than one larger and heavier team was taken into camp by his gridders. Potential varsity material was un- covered and thats the value of a B team. Boxing aspirants were also helped by Brother Ottog he kept them in training before the tourna- ment started. Bro. Eugene Sohm, S.M. Affectionately known to the students as 'tThe Coach for his ability and success in athletics, Brother Eugene considers coach- ing pretty much a hobby. Rather versa- tile in any line of sports, he is head base- ball coach of the school and assistant to Mr. Kamp in football and basketball. Last year he coached the baseball team to Prep Championship, and that success may come again this year. Page Fifty-One Gamba Bro. Edwin Rohrbach, S.M. Brother Edwin's mighty midgets, the C basketball squad, displayed the winning combination of speed and smoothness. proving that they were thoroughly tutored in both offense and defense. Brother Edwin coaches Junior track, and the cheer leaders for the various sports all practiced and performed under his training. Bro. Joseph Riley, S.M. Besides his many extra-curricular ac- tivities in music. Brother Riley found time at the start of the year to coach the C football team. Though not in any regular league, the team played numerous games and thereby got lots of experience in the ugive and take of football. Brother Riley be- lieves minor athletics a very neces- sary element in developing varsity teams.

The team Worked smoothly and efficiently, but- lost several chances for championship by very close scores. The highlight of the season was the Homecom- ing game in which the Micks overwhelmed St. Louis, 20-0. ,, B 'r I: A will-y The B football squad enjoyed a successful season this year by tying for the Prep League championship with C. B. C. They began the drive for first place by defeat- ing Central Catholic of East St. Louisg Varsity Record McBride Cleveland ....... McBride Roosevelt ....... McBride ,......,.. ,.... With a group of athletes such as this, the future is very promising for football his- tory at McBride. The B squad was coached by Brother Otto Weisbruch and captained by Bob Chamblin. League teams. n C TEHM?l C Football in its own small way prospered last season under its very proficient coach, Brother Joseph Riley. While our varsity was carrying on the McBride tra- dition in the Prep League the Midgets were laboring unheralded in preparing for the years to come.
