I I 1, K Q4 ---- 'S' 'Ta A. l 23, V, In the year 1919, under the fatherly guidance of Rev. John Cherry and the able direcf tion of the late Mother Mary Ursula, in a little red brick building on Taaffe Place in Brooklyn, the MERCY COMMERCIAL HIGH SCHOOL was established. The first class of twentyfthree students was welcomed by their principal, Sister Mary Helena. Little did the founders surmise at the time that. this little seed, MERCY COMMERCIAL HIGH SCHOOL, would blossom into the CATHERINE McAULEY COMMERCIAL HIGH SCHOOL. On the Feast of Corpus Christi, 1940, Rev. Mother Mary Philip, Mother Superior of the Sisters of Mercy of Brooklyn, sought and ob' tained permission from His Excellency, Most Rev. Thomas E. Molloy, S.T.D., to build a new high school. His Excellency suggested the present site on Foster and Brooklyn Avenues, Brooklyn. The following year on May 11, the late Rev. Monsignor Thomas Nummey, then pastor of St. Therese, the Little Flower of jesus Church, Brooklyn, blessed and broke the ground for the new building. In memory of Mother McAuley, beloved foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, the name MERCY COMMERCIAL HIGH SCHOOL was changed to the CATHERINE McAULEY COMMERCIAL HIGH SCHOOL. When the doors of the new building were opened on September 14, 1942, with Sister Mary Annunciata as principal, the second phase of the history of Catherine McAuley began. The student body of twentyfthree in 1919 had now, twentyfthree years later, grown to two hundred and ninety students. Through the dili- gence and hard work of Sister Mary Annunciata, the school stands today one of the best equipped in Brooklyn, its auditorium, gymnasium and spa' cious cafeteria are second to none while its library, commercial department, and art room bring sighs of envy from the lips of our visitors. The focal point of the CATHERINE McAULEY COMf MERCIAL HIGH SCHOOL is the devotional Holy Spirit chapel, where one sees the students making frequent visits to our Lord. Although the CATHERINE McAULEY HIGH SCHOOL is noted for its commercial curriculum, its students receive a wellfrounded education, with courses in language, mathematics, science, chemistry, etc. Catherine McAuley, because of its high scholastic standing, has today an enrolled student body of over a thousand. Were it not for lack of facilities, this number could easily be doubled, judging by the everflengthening waiting list and by the number of girls who are disappointed every registration day. This year, under Sister Mary Euphrasia, another chapter was completed in the history of the CATHERINE McAULEY COMMERCIAL HIGH SCHOOL. The Sisters who, up until now, had been ineonveniently quartered in private houses on the school block, have taken possession of their modern convent which was started two years ago while Sister Mary Geraldine was principal. This new building is a beautiful complement to the CATHERINE McAULEY COMMER- CIAL HIGH SCHOOL and is a rich recompense for the years during which the Sisters lived so patiently and cheerfully in inadequate annexcs. The wellfpl.innetl curriculum and snioiitlif running efficiency of the urgaiiizgiticiii of the Catherine MeAuley Ciminiereml High Sehomml is the result of the fciresight, experienee :intl tireless effurts of our revered prineipgil, Sister Mgiry' Euphrasia, Sisters patienee, kindness and underf staintling halve, in the short time she has had her new post here, endeared her to all MCAUlCj'.lllS. 'Ss From the unforgettable day we Hrst met as freshmen to this glorious and happy junior year, we have had a driving incentive to make our four years at IvIcAuley record ones. Our freshman year was chiefly an orientation period. In trying to act like seniors we only succeeded in looking like the freshmen that we were. In our sopho' more year we dealt with several new subjects. Those in commercial course began their siege with typing and shorthand, while the academic stu- dents discovered a new friend for was it an an 'Ms' enemy7j in geometry. By this time nearly every girl had found a place for herself in at least one school club and all discovered talents which had previously been hidden. Now as juniors, so diff ferent from the freshmen of three years ago, we are well advanced in our studies. We would like to thank our school for providing us with many happy hours in the form of school activities. Since our first days at McAuley we have stored up many memories, all of them happy ones, which we will carry with us for life. Ce equals Cd and ED equals CE thinkest the girls of the 3A1. Although at times this may he difhcult to compte' hend, Sister Mary Theophane quickly clarihes it. Carol Ann Haynes is taking great pains in reading her accurate notes while Sister Mary Claudia is making sure that it is an errorless letter. 91441 fNf.1r1.' It is constant work. However, the Clee Club members were rewarded for all their hard practicing as their renditions at Christmas and Graduation were excellent. Um yllafaify ylfaiwzs We pause for a moment to listen to those melodious strains of music coming from our school auditorium. Yes, it is our own outstanding school orchestra. The Junior and Senior Orchestras, under the direction of Mr. Richard Schwende and Sister Mary Agneta, have advanced and have become one of the foremost clubs enjoyed not only by the students but by guests as well. The Orchestra has played at such functions as ParentfTeacher Meetings, School Assemblies, Ring Ceremonies, Oratorical Contests, and Graduations, putting on programs of classical, semifclassical and popular music. Recently we have added new instruments -trumpets, saxophones, clarinets and trombones, making the Orchestra bigger and better in tone and volume. Our new Junior Orchestra, which is composed largely of new members, is doing extremely well, most of the members learning to play an instrument for the first time. The girls in this group who have joined this year are: Kathleen Rcavey, Mary Farley, Diane Devlin, Teresa Murray, Shiela McLaughlin, Claire Mar' rongiello, joan Lambert, Dorothea Henry, and Arlene Heilman. Excellent work has been done by our advanced members-Pat Duffy, Rosellen Walsh, Anna Gagliardi, Marilyn Maloney, Mary Rogers, and Ann Jeffers. All have benefited from the musical training and pleasure from the Orchestra. greatly derived GLEE CLUB The language of tones belongs equally to all mankind and melody is the absolute language in which the musician speaks-to every heart. - Wagiier. Under the careful musical direction of Mr. Richard Schwende and our Sister Moderator, the Glee Club has proved itself to be the baekbon: of many entertainments on McAuley's social calendar. It has as its aims the encouragement of obedience to law, moral and Catholic integrity, fidelity to American ideals, and honest industry in forwarding the cause of the Catholic educational system Membership in this society is not too difiicult to attain. A superior Catholic character, a scholastic average within the upper third of the class, regular attendance and punctuf ality, together with active participation in both school and parish organization, are the necessary factors which make a student eligible to join its ranks. Surely this is not too much to ask. Those who have earned membership do their best to work together with both faculty and student body, to bring about mutual cooperation and harmony. So girls, why not all make an earnest endeavor to meet the simple requirements, in order that you, too, may wear the bright, gold pin that sets one aside as a member of the Leo Honor Society? Our alumnae have always found these magic words the open sesame to worthwhile positions. It is to the everlasting credit of the young women that they have all proved worthy of the opporf tunities to advance because of this initial ad' vantage. May every graduate reali c that she holds in her hands the reputation of her beloved high school and may each one of us remember that everything that is achieved in after life is to be credited to our fine parents and secondly to the Catholic training of the Sisters of Mercy. Even though they didn't win the game, we are proud uf the Alumnae team, Young la-loud still runs through their veins. Mary O'Donnell and Claire Shine keep the spectaturs in gales of laughter.
