Modem languages, French and Spanish, offer an opportunity for the internationally-minded student to cultivate linguistic skills. Conversa- tional ability is emphasized with a look to the future of a possible trip or job abroad' The forerunner of these modern languages is Latin. Memorizing declensions and conjuga- tions is only preparation for the interesting translations to follow. Studying ancient civili- zations and literature gives insight into the extent of Latin,s influence on language, laws, and government.
