Another first for South Florida sports was the addi- tion of interscholastic track on the junior varsity level, and McArthur,s Colts proved to be the best. In regular season meets, the most spectacular win was a crushing 93-29 victory over Northeast on March 8. Two weeks later, the Mustangs lost the Broward County championship to Stranahan by two points, 641fz- 621A. However, revenge is sweet, and McArthur's j.v.'s got theirs on April 6 as they swept to victory in the Northern Division Gold Coast Conference finals. Then, on April 11, the fired-up sophomores had their finest hour as they captured first place in overall CCC com- petition. What a threat these Colts will bring to varsity teams in '64l J.V. Long running sessions took place every afternoon during track season. SUCCESSFUL SEASON McArthur High's junior-laden track team turned in an excellent 1963 record in dual and triangular meets as well as district competitions and Invitationals. In the first regular meet of the year, the Mustangs defeated Riverside Military Academy, 87-39. The end of March saw them participating in the Miami High Relays and the Flying L Relays. McArthur won third place in both the Broward County and Northern Cold Coast meets. In overall Gold Coast competition they placed ninth out of 17 teams. On May 3, Regionals were held at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. The Mustangs gained 4th place and had 5 cindermen qualify for the state tournament. Also in May the Fourth Annual Florida High School Decathlon, begun by Coach Gilmartin in 1950, took place on McArthur's oval. A total of 22 trackmen from schools all over the state participated with Leon Avery of Tallahassee Florida High capturing first place. Junior Lenny Albrecht finished an excellent fourth for MHS. Next year, with the Cold Coast Champion junior varsity team on the varsity squad, McArthur should be unbeatable in track competition. fa' i .fa I N be J . Cliff Merz, Bob Rice, Mike Hines, Harold DeVoe, Bob Velie, Jim Greenwood, Coach Ron DeLilla. GOLF TEAM GAINS EXPERIENCE The 1962 year of building paid high dividends as the Mustang golf team turned long hours of practice into a successful 1963 season. The boys managed a 5- 6-1 record in regular competition, and were ranked ninth in the District and thirteen in Gold Coast play. Highlighting this season's victories were the spec- tacular 5-0 opening rout of North Miami, a 3-2 come- back win over Pine Crest, and a 3-2 squeeker with rival South howard. Captain Inn Qrggnwood and sophomore sensation, Mike Hines, turned. in fine showings for the Mustangs. With Mike and letterman Cliff Merz returning next year, Coach Bon DeLilla has reason for even higher hopes in 1964. ose little white balls sure do end up in the oddest places
