Hard playing and long practice sessions bolstered the Mustang girls tennis team to a 3-5 season record. Bettering last year's record, the girls also achieved a sixth-place ranking in Gold Coast competition and fin- ished fourth in District 7 play, just missing a trip to the state tournament in Tallahassee. Strong with underclassmen, the girls were led by No. lqplayer Christy johnson, a junior. Lone senior Sonia Hoover paired with Gold Coast champion Beth Fuller for the No. 2 doubles to a net finalist bracket in the District tournament. Number 4 girl Natalie Motise teamed with Christy in No. 1 doubles and sophomore Charlene Theiss rounded out the five-girl squad. For the second consecutive year, the Mustang boys tennis team won the District 7 Championship. Also turning in McArthur,s first undefeated, 8-0, season in interscholastic sports, the MHS netters earned added glories as Northern Division Gold Coast Conference champs, runners-up in overall Cold Coast play, and the seventh top team in the state. Led by captain and No. 1 man Rick Preston, the boys also brought fame to McArthur with their spec- tacular play against rival South Broward, snapping a Bulldog 54-game winning streak, a record compiled over the last five years. Junior No. 2 man Iohn Prevost and sophomore No. 3 player Jay Maggiore each gained singles District Champ- ionships in their divisions. They both also gained semi- final berths in the state tournament. Chick Fuller, play- ing at No. 4 Singles, was District and Gold Coast champion. Since Preston was the onlv senior on the squad, McArthur's chances for a third consecutive District championship as well as added GCC and state laurels are extremely high. SWIMMERS GAIN EXPERIENCE In spite of 1-8 boys' and 3-6 girls' records, McArthur swimming teams never lost their spirit and will to win. The overall records, of both squads showed marked improvement over last year as the boys ended a 22-game losing streak by defeating South Dade and the girls won their first in 29 at the same time. The female Mustangs also triumphed over Miami Beach and South Dade for the second time. In four of the boys, meets, the winners finished with no more than an 8-point margin over the Mustangs. Boys coach John Pandak, new to MHS this year, stated, The prospects for swimming at McArthur next year seem a bit on the brighter side, because of our returning lettermen and junior high prospects coming up. With a new pool for McArthur in the near future, a summer swimming development program will be be- gun in West Hollywood, which will provide champion- ship Mustang swimming teams in the years to come. 122 Janet Bullock backslrokes across the pool in an afternoon praclice session
