Carol Bo January The same week, McArthur gained victory over Miami Norland, 60-52, and on January 18 faced long- time rival South Broward. Although the Bulldogs played a great game, the Horses proved too much for them and walked away the winner, 61-45. Our luck ran out the next Tuesday as the Stranahan Dragons played control ball and effectively throttled our fast break, 37-49. The Mustangs rode back on the winning trail with another victory over St. Thomas, 40-38. However, the trail proved to be a rocky one as next we lost our third game of the season, this time to Fort Lauderdale, 47- 51. With another win at North Miami under our belts, 85-72, we attempted to find revenge over the Flying L's. But Lady Luck was not with us as we again lost to Lauderdale, by a score of 50-63. After Norland fell under our hoofs on February 8, McArthur traveled to Christopher Columbus for a return game. There, the Explorers found the target and saddled the Mustangs with loss number 4, 6-63. On February 12, the Lowdermen returned to the Pompano gym to try to make it two in a row over the powerful Tornadoes. However, the home team had other ideas. With a cheering crowd behind them, the Colden Tornadoes jumped out in front at the beginning of the game and remained there throughout. Final score was 50-83 as we dropped to second place in the Gold Coast Conference. South Broward also cried for revenge, but the Mustangs triumphed over them for the second time in a game that wasn't decided until the last ten seconds. Then, Herbie Doner made two free throws to end scoring at 55-52. 112 Early urriver Max Sharkey watches the iunior varsity game intently. 1 is

On December 1, 1962, the McArthur Mustangs massacred Miami Christian, 108-15, to start the most successful, 19-8, basketball season in the school's seven- year history. Coach Reid Lowder guided the talented team to a second-place finish in the Northern Division of the Cold Coast Conference behind the champion Pompano Golden Tornadoes. Before the New Year rolled in, Miami Military Ac- ademy, St. Thomas Aquinas, Pine Crest, North Miami, the Christopher Columbus had fallen under our high- flying hoofs. In addition, during Christmas vacation Mc- Arthur participated in the Pompano Holiday Invitational Tourney. After defeating Orlando Boone, 74-57, and Coral Cables, 78-70, we faced Pompano in the finals. The two teams matched each other basket for basket until the last five minutes of the fourth quarter when the Tornadoes pulled away to win, 68-60. With this game we added a new trophy to our collection and began a strong rivalry between the two schools. Lenny Albrecht, Don King, and Willie Coates joined seven opponents on the All-Tourney team. In the first game of 1963, the squad demolished Riverside Military Academy's Kaydets, 71-28. Then, with revenge in mind, the 9-1 Mustangs hosted undefeated Pompano Beach on Ianuary 8. As a wildly screaming, capacity crowd watched, the Green rolled up a 27-point advantage in the third quarter and coasted to victory, 76-65. This was the team's finest hour and marked the high point of our successful season as we took over first place in the GCC. It also gave Pompano their first defeat in 33 regular-season games. e Cairns completes layup as Golden Tornadoes watch Surrounded! In the seasonis final away game, McArthur again blasted Miami Military Academy, this time 87-37. With a large crowd in attendance, the Green and White attempted to close out the regular season with a win in our gym over Stranahan. But the Dragons breathed fire and the Mustangs wilted, 43-53. Sporting a 17-7 record and high spirits, McArthur visited the Fort Lauderdale High gym for the District 7AA Tournament. In the first round Norland fell to our cagers for the third time, 57-43. Browardis Bulldogs ran into the LD gym to play the Mustangs in the semi- fina15 round, but they walked out the loser again, 48-4 . The finals of the tournament pitted the fired-up West Hollywooders against their old opponents, Pom- pano. The Mustangs led throughout the game until only two seconds remained in the last quarter, when Stan Cowherd tripped in a desperation shot to win for the Tornadoes, 78-76. Another runner-up trophy was added to our collection, and Pompano went on to become 1963 Class AA State Champions. Next year, with the six returning varsity men and new additions from this yearis fine junior varsity squad, McArthur is assured of another powerful basketball team with nothing beyond their reach.
