els fall on Mustang ball carrier during Miami Mililary Academy game. m captain Jim Ferguson with Sun-Tattler Most Valuable Player trophy. North Miami rode into the Mustang camp for the third annual McArthur Homecoming needing only one more win to clinch the championship of the Gold Coast Conference, Northern Division. Five plays after the opening kickoff, the Pioneers were in command, 7-0. During the third quarter, with the score 14-0, North Miami attempted the first field goal ever to be tried against McArthur, but the kick was wide. The game ended 21-0 with the Mustangs gaining only 61 yards on offense. In a Thanksgiving morning battle, the McElweemen met Miami Norland at home in the final game of the season for both squads. The first two times the Vikings had the ball, they scored, and led at halftime 19-0. During the second half, Coach McElwee sent in the jayvee sophomores and they stopped Norland cold. Mc- Arthur scored its final touchdown of the year in the fourth quarter on a remarkable catch of a 23-yard Chuck Robinson pass by O'Quinn in the end zone to end the game, 31-6. i 1 Fumble! ! Jim Ferguson, the only regularly-playing senior on the Mustang squad, guided the team as captain both on the field and in the dressing room. He was the first McArthur football player ever to be chosen to captain the team for an entire season. At the end of the campaign, Ferguson was voted by the student body to receive the Sun-Tattler Most Valuable Player award. The outstanding guard gained 79,650 points to win over second-place Leon O,Quinn. McArthur's Junior Varsity team played hard to end with a 2-4 record after dropping two close decisions. However, the boys over-all performance deserves much praise and with their graduation to the varsity squad next year, hopes for a winning season are imminent.

The 1962-63 varsity cheerleaders, under coach Bev- erly Thomas, put forth a new look in cheering this year. In addition to creating many new yells, the girls wore saddle oxfords and Stetson hats to games and school, hosted the Broward and Norland cheerleaders at pre-game suppers, co-sponsored a Bermuda Dance with the Monogram Club, and chose English teacher Carolyn Barnett as Honorary Cheerleader of the Year. They also served as program directors for pep assem- blies, putting on skits and funny episodes as well as leading the student body in cheers. But being a cheerleader is not all fun and games, as these girls can attest. Diligent and constant practice is necessary in order to have a good squad, and Mc- Arthur High School has one of the best.
