ness of the game was a fitting tribute to the keen rivalry that exists between the two schools. Records don't count, the game is decided on the field. After a weekis rest, the Mustangs journeyed to Lockhart Stadium for the third time, with St. Thomas Aquinas as opponents. A large homecoming crowd saw the Raiders go into the fourth quarter with a 13-0 lead, but then the Green came to life. Baker inter- cepted a pass at midfield and two plays later we had a first down on their 23. A fumble gave the ball to Aquinas, but a return fumble recovered by Ray Moulton put us on the 7. One play later we went in for the score and St. Thomas blocked our try-for-point. A poor Raider punt, runs of l8,11, and 14 yards, and O,Quinn going in from the 3 gave us another TD. Mike McElwee flipped a pass from a fake kick attempt to Baker in the end zone and the game was tied to end scoring for the night. ly leads the team onto the field before the Norlan wwniuwmw.as:a mgmmm..-mu.

As Head Coach Dick McElwee began his third year at McArthur, he was joined by two new staff members. Backfield coach jim Caldwell from the Uni- versity of Mississippi and line coach Dick Lombard from the University of Kentucky were greeted by re- turning assistants Claude Dent and Ed Hartman dur- ing late August scrimmage sessions. All five men were out on the field every afternoon during football season with the varsity and' junior varsity teams. Under the direction of Coach McElwee the boys ran, tackled, passed and kicked. However, these were not the only fundamentals taught the team. Principles of sportsmanship and fair play were also discussed, with the result that the Mustangs had fewer penalties called against them than the opposing team in every game played. With the promise of championship teams at Mc- Arthur in the near future, Coach McElwee and his men are to be congratulated on a rebuilding job well done. Against Pompano, the squad played their best three quarters of the year before losing in the fouth. The score was 12-7 with 10:20 left in the game when the Tornadoes scored on a fourth down. On the first play following the kickoff, Pompano intercepted a pass and scored again. McArthur's tally came on a 61-yard pass interception and runback by Brad Baker in the third quarter. At game's end, the scoreboard showed Pom- pano ahead, 26-7. In the big game of the year, the Mustangs and the South Broward Bulldogs clashed at McArthur Stadi- um for the Sun-Tattler trophy which had been in Broward's hands since last year's game. However, victory was not to be had as the Bulldog quarterback com- pleted one pass during the game and set up the winning touchdown. South Broward scored with 3:20 left in the first half. Final score was 7-0, but McArthur came away with a moral victory as they held the heavily- favored Bulldog squad to one touchdown. The close-

North Miami rode into the Mustang camp for the third annual McArthur Homecoming needing only one more win to clinch the championship of the Gold Coast Conference, Northern Division. Five plays after the opening kickoff, the Pioneers were in command, 7-0. During the third quarter, with the score 14-0, North Miami attempted the first field goal ever to be tried against McArthur, but the kick was wide. The game ended 21-0 with the Mustangs gaining only 61 yards on offense. In a Thanksgiving morning battle, the McElweemen met Miami Norland at home in the final game of the season for both squads. The first two times the Vikings had the ball, they scored, and led at halftime 19-0. During the second half, Coach McElwee sent in the jayvee sophomores and they stopped Norland cold. Mc- Arthur scored its final touchdown of the year in the fourth quarter on a remarkable catch of a 23-yard Chuck Robinson pass by O'Quinn in the end zone to end the game, 31-6. i 1 Fumble! ! Jim Ferguson, the only regularly-playing senior on the Mustang squad, guided the team as captain both on the field and in the dressing room. He was the first McArthur football player ever to be chosen to captain the team for an entire season. At the end of the campaign, Ferguson was voted by the student body to receive the Sun-Tattler Most Valuable Player award. The outstanding guard gained 79,650 points to win over second-place Leon O,Quinn. McArthur's Junior Varsity team played hard to end with a 2-4 record after dropping two close decisions. However, the boys over-all performance deserves much praise and with their graduation to the varsity squad next year, hopes for a winning season are imminent.
