TABLE OF CONTENTS Dedication Administration FacuJty Classes Activities Favorites Athletics Organizations Senior Brags Becky Lavender Picture Editors Irma de la Garza Vickie Vasquez Bobby Fisher Staff Assistants Sue Saunders, Mel Davis, Pat Welsh, Pat Jackson, Sharon Smith, and Tommy Armstrong Sponsor - Eugene Weafer This year's EL ESPEJO is dedicated to Marion Sell, Assistant Principal and Counselor, because of his unique service to the McAllen High School students. Mr. Sell is able, eminently, to carry out the act of sympathy, that is, to put himself in the place of the other person. In this way, he is able to work in terms of the felt needs of the students, and to help them think through their problems. He is tireless in his efforts and always willing to listen to problems, no matter how insignifi- cant they may seem. Certainly he has created a social immortality for himself-his influence goes on-and will go on in the lives of young people. Thus, in all, he adds dignity and respect to the public image of the teaching profession itself. R. E. CHASTAIN 4 VICE-PRESIDENT DAVE HORCER, JR. WILFRED DEAN WOODY F. PRIDE DR. RAMIRO R. CASSO DARIO R. GARCIA Secretary Scholar tfattleauut umeuiitaniott Greatness and genius go hand in hand, the one to see life steadily and to see it whole, the other, to have infinite patience. These qualities are found in Superintendent J. Lyle Hill, whose full experience in the field of edu- cation gives him acquaintance with the minutia of school organization, and whose responsible business ex- perience shows him the intimate relation of a public school to the community. In addition to more than twenty years of teaching and administration, he has had public relations and managerial experi- ence in business. After being graduated from Sunset High School, in Dallas, Mr. Hill went to Austin College, Sherman, where he earned the B.A. degree in history and English, with a minor in political science. This was followed by the Mj . degree at The University of Texas, in his- tory and government. Additional graduate work was taken at Fresno State College (education), South- west Texas Teachers College (education), University of North Carolina (history), and The Univer- sity of California (education). College level teaching was done at The University of North Carolina, The Citadel, and Edin- burg Junior College. At Eagle Pass High School, Mr. Hill taught in his major fields, while being as- sistant football coach and head baseball coach. His public school administrative responsibilities have included principal, McAllen High School; principal, Sierra Union High School, California; and superintendent at Kenedy, then at Refugio. The business experience was as advertising and sales promotion manager, General Electric (Texas Division) and as merchandise manager, Lichtenstein's, Corpus Christi. 'Ajle'Zill Sxfieniwce TUcmUm. a td —' Geniality and wisdom characterize the personality of E. Burke Hill, Assistant Superintendent of McAllen public schools. Mr. Hill, a graduate of Edna High School, Edna, Tex., was awarded his B.A. from Southwest Texas State College, San Marcos, and his M.Ed. from The University of Missouri, Columbia, Mo. Teaching experience included: rural schools in Jackson and Live Oak counties; McFaddin Independent Schools, McFad- din, Tex.; Midshipmen's School, Columbia University; Speech and Drama Depart- ment, Joplin Junior College, Joplin, Mo., and a principal- ship at Refugio Junior High School. Guardian of Educational Standards! This might be the title for Leonard H. Menn, Curriculum Director, whose intimate knowledge of course offerings and standards, as well as methods, make him a real asset to every teacher in the school system. Mr. Menn re- ceived the B.A. and M.A. from The University of Texas. Institutions attended were: Tarleton State College,South- west Texas Teachers College, University of Mexico, and American University. He has been honored by election to membership in Pi Sigma Alpha, national honor society in Government. He has mem- bership in: Texas Historical Society, American Historical Association, American Acad- emy of Political and Social Science. E. BURKE HILL, ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT LEONARD H. MENN, CURRICULUM DIRECTOR 9 Mrs. Ruth C. Turner, Secretary Office of Superintendent '£: L Mrs. Helen Berquist Mrs. Louise Prater Cafeteria Director Secretary Mrs. Rosannah Glover Secretary Competition offers increased opportunity, says Mr. Clark, for improving playing skills, devel- oping physical vigor, promoting real friendship, and learning good sportsmanship, as well as providing a chance to learn the rules of everyday living. While at Texas Western, from which he was graduated with B.A. and M.A. degrees,he lettered three years in football, was on the Little All-American, and led the con- ference in passing for two years. Mr. Clark has coached at Bowie High School, El Paso; Olton High School, Olton, Texas; Tulia High School, Tulia, Texas; and at McAllen. Mr. Clark is an excellent ex- ample of courage, character, and intelligence, thus symbolizing the meaning of sports in his own life. DEMOCRACY IS WON ON THE PLAYING FIELDS OF AMERICA Athletica Ant S lucatomal Inter-school athletic programs should be considered as a part of the school curriculum, since they are educational in purpose and content. This is the view of Mr. Vic Clark, athletic director of McAllen High School, whose long career in sports began with his winning seven letters at P.S.J.A., three in football and a captaincy, two in baseball and a captaincy, and two in basketball. He later as a head coach, made the record of 40 won, 39 lost, and two tied. 'Jciiwcte, Principal Elmer Grounds is dedicated to the fundamentals of education, which are necessary in the uncertain future faced by the young people under his direction. He is convinced that Industry, Goodness, Truth, and Respect for the Rights of the Individual, basic values in Western culture, can be taught in even the most ordinary tasks of everyday school living. This accounts for his studied care for each individual—student, tea- cher, or worker-in his organization. He is old fashioned, in the better sense of the word, in that no matter is too small or insignificant to merit his attention: He knows that there arc tremendous trifles, which go together to make the complete young person. PRINCIPAL ELMER GROUNDS 7%nee T eAicateci ‘PiofateiMala ALBERT G. GREER, ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL MARION M. SELL, ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Twenty-one years of teaching experience are the foundation for the ca- reen of service to youth for Albert G. Greer, As- sistant Principal. In pre- paration for this dedicated way of life, Mr. Greer, a graduate of Comanche High School, Comanche, Texas, received the B.S. degree from Texas Tech- nological College, Lub- bock, followed by the M.Ed. from the same school. Versatility is the word for Marion Sell, Assistan' Principal and Counsel fishing, photography sports have figured si ficantly in a care with the Bachelor; Anderson College and the M.Ed. from University of Texas? Sell was a photogra with training in the Nav School of Photography Advanced Motion Picture Camera School. Tsuneo, who is from a suburb outside of Tokyo, Japan, came to McAllen in the middle of September to live with the Harry Pederson family. Since Mr. Pederson is a photographer, Tsuneo is able to carry out his hobby, photography. Tsuneo has one sister who is 19 years of age. His father is a coffee importer. Tsuneo has added much to McHi with his outstanding per- sonality and friendly ways. Danny Douglas was McHi's exchange student to Europe for the summer of 1959. The experience he had living with his German family-sponsor was an educational one that he'll never forget. William Stephenson was chosen the first McHi student to attend school overseas during the school year. He went to a secondary school in Trento, and lived with an Italian family who spoke no English. Also, all courses were in Italian. William's trip abroad has certainly been an enligh- tening experience and an enjoyable one. 120 William Stephenson is shown aboard the plane for New York enroute to Italy. The Bulldogs scored on an 80-yard sus- tained drive in the second quarter, and tackle Bill Simpson added the winning margin with a boot through the upright for the extra point. The host Bears stormed right back after the return kickoff also to net a second quarter touchdown, but 'Dog halfback Ramiro Gonzales spoiled the Bear tally as he batted down an extra-point pass to spell victory for McHi in their opening game. McHi Upsets Alice McAllen surprised almost everyone with this victory-a 13-8 upset over highly touted Alice, who had just knocked Kingsville from the ninth spot in the state's 3-A ratings. The Bulldogs successfully opened their home season with the victory as they scored touchdowns in the second and fourth quarters to offset a deadly Alice passing attack which netted a fourth quarter tally. McAllen, in winning their second straight game of the infant grid season, more than equaled their last year's record, in which they posted only one victory. McHi dominated the ground statistics, but gave way in the total offense depart- ment when the Coyote aerial wave proved good for 160 yards. The passing attack, however, spelled the difference as the 'Dogs intercepted an Alice pass in the waning minutes of the game to kill a last touch- down drive by the visitors. Brahmas Tip McHi McAllen carried the statistics chart for the first time of the year, but fell short in the scoring department as they lost to host Kingsville 14-13. McHi spotted the Brahmas two early touchdowns and then battled back for two of its own, but a trick conversion attempt failed, leaving the 'Dogs two points shy of breaking a 21 home game winning streak by Kingsville. The first Bulldog touchdown came with two minutes remaining in the first half, making the halftime score 14-7. The Bulldogs almost pulled their third straight upset of the season as they pounded for a touchdown in the last quarter. 132 Randolph McCall and an unidentified Bulldog smother a P-SJ-A ball carrier, but not before he pitches to another teammate. McAllen- P-SJ-A 9-11-59 Whoops! says halfback Roy Zapata, as he misses his attempt to block an Alice aerial. McAllen - Alice 9-18-59 Randolph McCall snags a pass from under the nose of a Kingsville de- fender for a short gain against the Brahmas. McAllen-Kingsville 10-2-59 End John D. Berry makes first contact as Randolph McCall and Ruben Garcia move in to gang-tackle a Mission ball carrier, while Bill Overstreet watches from under a pile-up. McAllen-Mission 10-9-59 Let's go, says quarterback Joe Kidd, after pitching out to Ramiro Gonzales, and moving out in front to lead the interference against the visiting Greyhounds. McAllen-San Benito 10-16-59 'Hounds Double McHi The San Benito Greyhounds scored three times on an identical pass play as they came from behind twice to whip McAllen 20-10. The Hounds aerial attack was good for only 40 yards, but accounted for three touchdowns to spell the victory. McAllen's offensive attack was high- lighted by a 19-yard field goal by Bill Simpson. The lone 'Dog touchdown came on a 74-yard pass play to put the Bull- dogs out in front 10-6 at the half, but the Greyhounds returned for a tally in each of the last two quarters to leave McHi with a 3-2 record. 'Dogs Dump Rattlers Although playing like pros between the 20-yard stripes, the Bulldogs had to settle for a 7-0 victory over Rio Grande City. The 'Dogs turned in their best offensive performance of the year in registering their fourth victory, but McAllen just couldn't find the scoring punch after hitting the penetration zone. The Bulldogs chalked up 291 yards rush- ing, but gained little yardage after cracking the Rattlers' 20. McHi even attempted two field goals, but to no avail. The big break came in the third quar- ter when Randolph McCall punted McHi out of trouble, and Bill Simpson covered for the Bulldogs after RGC fumbled. The 'Dogs had punted only twice in the game, but the fourth down boot proved to be the decisive factor as McHi turned it into the touchdown of the game. Quarterback King Beardsley eyes an on-rushing Rio Grande Citv Rat tier, as he struggles to get loose from a tip-toe tackier. McAllen-Rio Grande City 10-23-59 'Dogs Plaster Mission For the third time of the year the McAllen Bulldogs found themselves trailing in the statistics department but ahead in the scoring column as they used several long runs and two pass interceptions to thrash the host Mission Eagles 33-14. The game was closer than the score indicates, and McHi held only a 13-0 lead at the end of three quarters Neither team scored in the third frame, but the two squads exploded for 34 points in the final 12 minutes. Mission's twin tallies both came in the fourth quarter, but were offset by two McAllen interceptions which totaled almost 100 yards and accounted for two Bulldog scores. The third fourth-quarter score held by McHi came on a long run. 133 Eagles Nip McHi The Bulldogs almost pulled the upset of the season as they rallied with a last-half attack to scare highly-favored Brownsville before falling 15-14 in their first confer- ence game. Brownsville built up a 15-0 lead at the half, but McAllen reversed the story in the final two quarters to trim the Eagle lead and almost turn the tide in the scoring column. McHi rallied for two touchdowns in the final period, but fell shy of a victory when they failed to convert after the last TD. The Bulldogs faked a kick after the initial tally and passed for the two-point conver- sion, but the fake kick PAT play failed on the second attempt with only 35 seconds remaining in the game. Cardinals Rip McAllen The Harlingen Cardinals roared back from a 12-8 halftime deficit to outscore McHi 36-18 and eliminate the Bulldogs from the south zone race. The battle later proved to be for the cellar, with McHi taking last place honors and leaving Har- lingen with a lone vicotry and third place. The Bulldogs paced Harlingen during the first two quarters and lead Harlingen 12-8 at the half, but McAllen lost its scoring punch in the final two frames, and the Redbirds returned to outscore visiting McHi 4-1 in the touchdowns department. McHi's lone last-half score came on an 87-yard kick-off return by halfback Ramiro Gonzales. 'Cats Blast McHi The Bulldogs finished in the south zone cellar as they traveled to Edinburg only to be beaten 26-6. The host Bobcats built up an 18-0 lead at the half and a 26-0 fourth quarter lead before allowing McHi their lone tally. The loss left the 'Dogs with an 0-3 ids- trict record, but McHi holds a 4-5 mark for the season. The Bobcats passed for most of their yardage, accounting for 272 yards through the airways on 14 completions. McHi's lone touchdown came after the Bulldogs had turned to a spread offense. Randolph McCall snagged a pass for the solo tally. fback Drake Cameron outmaneuvers a would-be Brownsville tackier ia speculates which way to go against the other as he grinds out a big gain against the Eagles. McAllen-Brownsville 10-30-59 134 End Randolph McCall pulls in a pass from quarterback Jimmy Dean to score McHi's only touchdown against Edinburg in the last game of the year.
