Text from Pages 1 - 216 of the 1959 volume:

' ' ■ s £ (%£ 0- ,0 . o Foreword The time has come the Walrus said. mTo talk of many things: Of shoes — and ships — and sealing wax — Of cabbages — and kings — And why the sea is boiling hot — And whether pigs have wings. This year’s EL ESPEJO staff is not going to talk about the boiling sea or pigs wings. Those facts have been establish- ed. But by using photographs and copy - imaginable and unimaginable things - and the words of Lewis Carroll, we hope this bulky tome will take you Through the -Looking Glass to the Wonderland of McHi in 1959. Dedication DON ENDERLE There is a man who has been in this school system for ten years teaching biology and chemistry. He graduated from Frederiks- burgHigh and then went to Schriner Institute. From Shreiner, he attended the University of Texas and in 1947 received his BA de- gree. Six years later, in 1953 he received his ME degree at the University. The seniors on the annual staff feel that he has been a major part of our high school life. He works in the concession stands during football games, and helped the 58 juniors keep track of their ribbon money. He is one of the students favorite teachers, and always has their best interests at heart. To you, Mr. Enderle, the annual staff dedicates the 1959 El Espejo. •You are old, said the youth, mone uould hardly suppose That your eye was as steady as ever: Yet you balanced an eel on the end of your nose--- What made you so awfully clever?m Our teachers and administrators aren’t old-really not awfully-but oh how they are clever! We haven’t seen any of them balancing eels on their noses but we are sure they could if they set their minds to it. After having been among them for several years we have finally come to the conclusion that they are practically people, and very nice people at that. Just to show you how fine they are here are their pictures. 1958-59 McAllen School Board Seated: Mrs. Harold Hendricks, Dave Horger. Standing: Dario Garcia, Woodbury F. Pride, Larry Fritz, Francis Linn. No school could begin to operate without the efficient capable people who make up our school board. These men and women un- selfishly devote their time and efforts to the betterment of the school district. They work closely with the administration to work out and solve the many problems that confront the various schools. This board is the back- bone of our schools. Our schools would not hold together without them. R. E. Chastain School Board President 8 J. Lyle Hill, Superintendent Though he has been in McAllen less than a year, J. Lyle Hill has already become an active member of our community. He has a friendly, easy manner that won the hearts of the McAllen High School students immediately. He has worked long and hard in improving our schools. Mr. Hill has previously been the principal of our school and is known well by many McHi ites. 9 Administrative Staff MRS. WILL A MAE COT TEN. The club we belong to never meets today. Other peoples' clubs meet today but never ours. But this can’t be. Unlike Alice in Wonderland every- body can't win: always winning only happens in books. Lady of the Mirror Judy Jordan begins her reign as Lady of the Mirror by breaking through a diamond-shaped mirror at the Presentation Ball of 1959. She received the highest honor McHi can give one of it's co-eds. Looking into the mirror of Judy’s high school career, one sees her as a class officer for two years, a member of the Student Council for four years, a Gym Jam member for four years, and a class favorite for four years. Other reflections show her as an actress and the secretary of Thespians. She was an active member of the Booster clubs and participated in choral work for several years. Kristina has made a place for herself in McHi since she arrived here in August. She has been a member of the McHi Boosters and has been active in the Stu- dent Council. Kristina has also been a reporter on the Wheel staff and worked on Salud publications. She was also an honor- ary member of N. H. S. In the All-School play, Kristina por- trayed the part of a tourist. In addition, she represented McAllen at the Citrus Fiesta as the Duchess of the Midnight Sun. When Kristina leaves McAllen for her home in Finland, she will be missed be- cause of her friendly ways and pleasant personality. .jtAj- c'792 2 yzA rA . sy y?r =5 ? %%%%!? ’ t r2 i f -' Reeling and writhing, of course, to begin with,’ the Mock Turtle re- plied: and then the different branches of Arithmetic—Ambition, Distraction, Uglification, and Derision. Then the classical master teaches Laughing and Grief!’ Maybe this sounds silly to you (the titles do seem a little strange) but it is all very natural to us seniors who have wasted our lives away with our noses in books. We under- stand that the juniors study when it pleases them but as to the sopho- mores----it has been so long since we seniors have been way down among them that we aren’t sure how they spend their time. To satisfy your curiosity (if you have any) we would like to present the faces of these people with the various studying habits. Sophomores study dili- gently for good grades in Mr. Baltis’s plane geometry class. DO IT THIS WAY! Mighty senior Joyce Andrews informs sophomores Randy Disney and Jan Thomas how to decorate correctly for the Homecoiring Dance. SINGING (?)... in Homecoming Assembly are Nancy Allen, Dina Nixon, and Diane Voss in an Andrew Sisters’ rendition of Don’t Sit Under the Apply Tree. GO! BOYS, GO! Sophomore B Boosters member listen attentively to plans for a poster party. Wonderland Finale Does your watch tell you what year it is? Of course not, Alice replied, but that’s because it stays the same year for such a long time together. This year has lasted for a long time together, too. But while it was lasting, many things happened, good and bad. The EL ESPEJO was supposed to recall some of the pleasanter ones to mind. We hope it has lived up to your expectations and even passed the expecta- tations of you who haven't had very high ones. W'e know that everyone says it will be wonderful to get out of high school-especially the seniors. But we're sure that when the time rolls around all of us will be more than a trifle sad. The annual staff wishes the graduating seniors good luck in the coming years, and to the underclassmen we say: See you next year!
