FOREWORD A full-fledged circus is a mighty busy place; something is going on every minute. So, also is McHi a place of activity. From September until May our own three rings are never empty. Therefore the staff of the El Espejo pre- sents to you this 1957 annual in all its circus glory, in the hope that you will enjoy turning the pages of this cotton-candy and side-show record as much as we enjoyed preparing it for you. Judy Ferguson Judy Hendricks 4 For twelve years, since coming to McHi in 1945, Mrs. Vivian Ferguson has been a very active part of the McHi scene. She has worked hard in the interests of our school, and her contributions have been many and varied. Among the many clubs Mrs. Ferguson has sponsored, is the Advanced Slide Rule Club. This club trains slide rulers for Interscholastic League competition, and it is due largely to her hard work that Mrs. Ferguson’s students are so often victorious in competition. The Student Council and the cheerleaders are also sponsored by this active teacher, and she takes part in all their activities—whether chaperoning a trip to Corpus Christi, selling peanuts, or making uniforms. It is to Mrs. Ferguson that the thankless job of riding herd on a bus of game-bound students often falls. All of this and more too: Mrs. Ferguson has taught five periods of mathematics daily and is one of McHi’s most popular instructors. For these activities and many others, we feel that Mrs. Vivian Ferguson deserves a very big “THANK YOU.” Therefore, although we realize that her work on our behalf is beyond our power of repayment, it is to Mrs. Vivian Ferguson that we dedicate our 1957 El Espejo with the deepest gratitude. DEDICATION ANNUAL STAFF Responsible for this year’s El Espejo is the Annual Staff pictured above. Under the gentle guidance of Mr. B. N. Smith, sponsor. Toya Kike and Ellen Watson (seated) helped create this yearbook, as well as the artistic masterpieces on the division pages. Margaret Townsend (also seated) and Sylvia Santiago (second from right) managed the business end of the deal. Sara Sanborn. Ann Pagenstecher. and Blanca Gonzalez (first, third, and last, standing) stuck pictures, wrote captions, and ran errands. Lois Engel and Ruth Kronke (not shown) did everything at once, and Jim Lockett and Fred Mover took care of the darkroom and pictures, and handed the staff more laughs than a circus, while co-editors Judy Hendricks and Judy Ferguson coordinated the efforts of all, assembled the pages, read copy (with tears in their eyes), and valiantly tried to meet each ‘deadline. CO-EDITORS: Judy Hendricks and Judy Ferguson 6 v lSTfi4 0 T. E. McCOLLUM Superintendent T. E. McCollum has headed the scholastic parade at McIIi for the last nine years. He has seen vast changes and brought many improvements to our schools. We are deeply grateful to him for his many years of hard work on behalf of our school. 8 ELMER GROUNDS Principal Although this is Elmer Grounds’ first year as ringmaster of McHi. he has been in the McAllen School system for several years in an administrative capacity, and has already won respect and admiration from the student body. 9 BOARD OF TRUSTEES Standing—Dario Garcia; Lucille Hendricks. Secretary; Hobson Yancy; Herschel Whigham. Seated—Larry Fritz; Francis Linn. President; R. E. Chastain. Backing McHi all the way is the Board of Trustees. Always in the center ring when there, is work to be done; it is they who keep the school system running smoothly. 10 MRS. RUTH TURNER Secretary to Superintendent MRS. Since coming to McAllen, Peggy has been elected treasurer of the Stu- dent Council, chosen a cheerleader, acted in the all-school play, inducted into the National Honor Society, and been a member of Tri-Hi-Y and the McHi Boosters. McHi salutes Peggy Brown for her many attributes and accomplishments. PEGGY BROWN LADIES IN WAITING CAROLINE STONE JUNIOR IRENE HINOJOSA SOPHOMORE CLASS BEST ALL-AROUND Fred Schultz MOST HANDSOME W. Halldis has made a real place for herself since coming to our school. She is a member of G.A.A., the Future Nurses of America; and she represented McAllen in the Texas Citrus Fiesta, where she received special commenda- tion for poise, grace, and beauty, all three of which she had in full, in addi- tion to many other qualities. When Hall- dis returns to Norway, she will certain- ly be missed at McHi. 86 0 R Excitement was high at one of McHi’s opening games, as head coach Charles Churchill seems to be willing the boys to win. McHi’s famous spirit continues through a season just as exciting, which saw many close games and thrilling last minute rallies. Although the season was disappointing from the standpoint of score, it was one of the best ever for spirit, drive, and “will to win.” As Coach Churchill often said “When the going is rough, you can prove you’re a man. Stay in and fight. I know you can.” Coaches Victor Clark and Frank Rutledge stood by head coach Charles Churchill, as his assistants during the ’56-’57 football season. They aided the Bulldogs faithfully and concentrated their efforts toward improving the Bulldogs’ game. _ „ .. . .. Coach Clark was also head of the “B” team Bullpups which won the district championship. He will be the “big chief” of the Bulldogs next year. Coach Rutledge was in charge of the Freshman “C” team. Both coaches were a great asset to McAllen and each performed his job well. The Bullpups blasted the opponents in their district to win the title of District Champs. District competition on the B” level, this year, was tough, and the Bullpups can be proud of their win. “B sports are an important part of the McAllen High School athletic program, and the “B” teams always make a good showing. 100 “B” TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM Bottom: C. Under the leadership of Coach Sam Williams, who retired his position as basketball head this year, the team made an excellent showing for their first season in 14AAAA competition. Before regular season play, McHi won first place in the Donna Tournament, and second place in both the Corpus Christi and the San Antonio Tournaments. Then in conference play, the team was victorious in 8 out of 10 games. They won first-half play and lost the district crown by one game in a play-off with Harlingen. Individual honoree’s on the team include Steve Jordan, who was awarded a position on all three tournament teams, the all-state team, and the all-district team; Toby Guynn. who was named all- district honorable mention; and Jim Harvey who won a position on the second all-district team. Steve Jordan, team co-captain, finished up his high school basketball career this year by setting a mass of new records. Before conference games began, McHi entered a series of tournaments in which Steve broke the record for the highest number of points per man in a single game. This was a 40 point tally over Vic- toria. He also was chosen on the all-tournament team in all three tournaments entered. In regular season play, Steve's 1155 total points broke the high-point man record at McHi. The previous record was held by his brother Darrell who graduated from here last year. The highest basketball honor in the state was bestowed on Steve after the season ended, as he was unanimously elected to the position of center on the all-state 14AAAA team. He also was the unanimous winner of a position on the all- district team. These choirs are: the Girls’ Chorus, Boys’ Chorus, Freshman Choir, and the A Cappella choir. Anyone will agree that those interested in this field have wonderful opportunity to ful- fill their desire. These choirs have given many perform- ances during the school year. They’gave their annual Christmas Concert in which they pre- sented the opera “Amahl and the Night Visi- tors”. This program brought the school much acclaim. They also have been the guests of various service clubs. The A Cappella choir appeared on tele- vsion and made a singing tour in the spring. Indispensable to the choirs, is its direc- tor Bev Henson. Mr. Henson has been at McHi for five years.
