Mrs. Brown has been at McHi longer than any other teacher and has such a “catching” personality and good sense of humor that to know her is to like her. For her loyalty to the Bulldogs and service to McHi through the years, we dedicate the 1956 El Espejo. McALLEN MEMORIAL LIBRARY 5 McALLEN. T. E. McCollum Superintendent of Schools Mr. McCollum runs all the schools in the McAllen district. With his wise counsel, McAllen has been able to point with pride to their schools. Mr. McCollum received his B.A. degree from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene and his M.A. at Texas Technological College in Lubbock. With this background, one can rest assured that his supervision is effective and complete. 10 Standing: Dario Garcia, Mrs. Harold Hendricks, Hobson Yancy, Hcrschell Whigham. They, with the help of the executives, plan the policies of the school, call for school bond issues, elections, and board elections, and make con- tracts. Not only are the above problems under their jurisdiction, but they are actually tax assessors and set the school tax rate in the district. The school board members work on public service, receiving no pay and little recognition. The school board is truly “the wheels that move the school wagons,” because without their help and understanding the McAllen schools would not have the fine records they have today. His service is something to which we can all look with pride and gratitude. Through his position as assistant principal Mr. Williams has proved his ability and enthu- siasm in McHi, not only in the office, but as basketball coach. Whether it is a personal problem, a freshman trying to decide what courses to take or a senior wanting to know what college to attend, Miss Linnard is here to guide us. The Seniors, this year, are not sad, for they have made their year a truly memorable one. To begin the list of activities they have the Homecoming Dance, Senior Day, the Senior play etc. All of these things will help them buy a gift for McHi, so the school will never forget them, as they will never forget McHi. 22 Esquiel Acevedo Precision Drill, Asst. They enjoyed Junior day, sold football ribbons, mums, and finally planned the Junior-Senior Prom, which to them was the best our school has ever had. These students have advanced through three years of high school and are next in line to take over the responsibilities of McHi. They will set the examples, carry out school traditions, and uphold the standards of McHi. Judy Jordan Treasurer Jack Rollier FRESHMEN Filling the vacancy left by the Seniors of ’55, the Freshmen of 56 were brought to McHi. After the annual “Fish Day” with Seniors in command, the Freshmen really became a part of McHi. Although standing for the Senior yell and sitting in the balcony seemed to confuse and bewilder them at first, as time went by they began to consider it as part of the fun of being a Freshman. As the year progressed, they settled back to work toward and dream of the day they would become “mighty” Seniors. Being selected Lady of the Mirror is the highest honor given any McHi girl. It is based upon beauty, personality, popularity, and ability. In the past four years Dorothy has exhibited the above traits in many ways. In her freshman year she was a class officer, and has been a class favorite all four years. She has been a cheerleader and a member of the Student Council for the past three years. In her junior year she was inducted into the National Honor Society, and is now co-editor of The Wheel.
