Prologue... “All the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players. - Shakespeare McAllen High School is a stage; the teachers, students and administrators are the play- ers. Our four years in high school represent the ascent of an actor from his first night to his last. As Freshmen we feel the glare of the unfriendly lights and cold faces, and then in our second year, as Sophomores, we become accustomed to the faces in the audience. In our Junior year we become “seasoned actors,” and then our Senior year rings down the final curtain on the successful career. All through these four years we experience regret, sadness, triumph, and gladness. Be- cause a year at McHi resembles a stage-play, we have chosen to present our past year at McHi as a big Broadway production. We would like to express our appreciation to the All-Valley Morning Express for the group picture of the football team, the one of the starting team, and the one of the boys limbering up. To Harold Sheetz, photographer for the Valley Evening Monitor, we would like to express our thanks for individual pictures of Howard Timlin, Wesley Taylor, Eural Gray, Alberto Anzaldua, and Tito Torres, and several action pictures in the sports sec- tion, as well as some in other sections of the book. Almost all other pictures are staff pictures, however. By mistake, Arthur Guerra’s name was left out of the masthead on the i nt r od u c t o r y page. His name should have appeared as one of the staff members. Dedication... Only one person in the history of McAllen High School has been a student, teacher, and principal at our alma mater. That person in Don Irwin. It would be an understatement to say simply that Mr. Irwin is a friend to McAllen High School, and yet that is exactly what he is. Mr. Irwin’s devotion tothis school is evidenced by his friendliness to students, his whole-hearted cooperation with student activities, his many hours of extra work, and his frank admiration for the enviable achievements of stu- dents in both scholastic and athletic contests. We of the El Espejo staff feel that McHi is fortunate to have a principal with such out- standing scholastic, artistic and humanistic interests. Mr. Irwin is certainly a credit to our school. We dedicate this 1950-51 El Espejo to him.

The chief setting for our production is the main building, above and left. Since 1927 students have been attend- ing high school classes here. One of the largest school buildings in the Valley, it is also kept modern by frequent remodeling. Our scene of action switches to Bull- dog M e m o r i a 1 Stadium, right, for many sporting contests and other civic and school functions.
