J- W. HORNER £D! TOR AL Z MG- The newspapers of America, more than any other one media, are responsible for molding public opinion. The newspaper not only forms public opinion but it offers more for a nickel than any other type of periodical. Where else can one find humor, pathos, tragedy, great literature, latest scientific data, latest up-to-the-minute news and a thousand other things in such a small package as the five-cent newspaper? Yes, the newspaper of America is, to use an old phrase, “as American as America itself.” The American press has a tremendous duty to perform for the people of our country, and for this reason, we chose to pattern out 1950 El Espejo after the various phases of newspaper production. To the newspaper industry and to newspaper readers, we dedicate this annual. The gentleman on the right is Bobo, the guiding genius and unseen editor of the yearbook. Bobo’s wide experience in the field of journalism has been an invaluable asset in assembling and compiling the annual. Bobo is a creation of Art Editor Arthur Guerra and his presence has been constantly with the staff since Arthur “dreamed” him up. He has been both an inspiration and unlimited source of information in editing the El Espejo. The staff has enjoyed its association with Bobo. We hope our readers will. Althoughthey n but four contests their play against several avily favored teams was praise enough. The Bulldogs opened the season on Sept. 9 when ty tangled with the powerhouse of the 30-A district, ; Mission Eagles, in the dedication of the new Bull- g Memorial Stadium. The Eagles won 6-0, The following Friday the 'Dogs fooled many of fir supporters by completely routing the supposed- strong P.S.J.A. Bears 32 to 0 in a traditional -uggle. Sept. 22 found the Bulldogs traveling to San tonio for a clash with the Tech Buffs. Outweighed d outmanned, McHi fell before a 48 to 7 onslaught. After an open date the Bulldogs completely out- lyed the powerful Alice Coyotes, but came out on f short end of a 12 to 6 count. The succeeding ek the 'Dogs pushed across a t o u c h d o w n in the it minutes to stop the Kingsville Brahmas 14 to 7. The McHi crew journeyed to Harlingen Oct. 3 to e n the 1 6-AA campaign against the Cardinals, ter putting up a terrific struggle, the Bulldogs fi- lly bowed to the Birds 19 to 14. On Oct. 28 in a steady rain the Purple and Gold met the tough Edinburg Bobcats. It was not until the final minutes that the contest was decided when the ‘Cats stopped a Bulldog march on their own 10-yard line and grabbed a narrow 12-6 victory. Nov. 4 wasMcHi’s bad night as the lowly Don- na Redskins picked up a surprising 1 3 to 0 win before a stunned crowd. The next Friday Eural Gray turned in two sen- sational t o u c h d o w n sprints to give the Bulldogs a hard-fought 12 to 6 district win over the Brownsville Eagles. Putting together all their scoring punch McHi knocked the up and coming San Benito Grey- hounds out of the 16-AA Championship by a one sided 38 to 7 score, gaining revenge for the 19 to 0 loss suffered by the Bulldogs in 1948. On the strength of their last season spurt and upsets inside the loop the 'Dogs finished the season a half game out of first place. At the conclusion of the season McHi received the 16-AA sportsmanship award and Coach Charles Moser was honored with being selected as 16-AA coach of the year. Halfback Eural Gray plunges over for a touchdown. Four Bulldogs, Charles Leverman, Arturo Molina (35), A.C.
