She has taught with tl vision tor the dexelopment ot' young informed people who will be prepared to contribute successfully to our American Xxiitly' of Lite. Unknown to many ot' the students ot' our school, the Student Council under her leadership has pro- vided such equipment as ping pong tahles. volley- balls, howling games and other recreational facilities. The Student Council also sponsors the magazine sales, proceeds from which made the intercommuni- cation system, the refrigerated water fountains, and the stage lights possible. The much admired letter- men's jackets are also purchased from money earned by the Student Council. All these things and many, many more not listed are the result ot the efforts ot' Miss XX7hit.1ker's lead- ership. She possesses a generous portion of common sense, a skillful hand, and a keen perspective ot the students' problems. We. the students ot' M,H.S., proudly dedicate this edition of the 1959 Dancing Rabbit to Miss Lahoma Whitiiker. c n :ng fountlnni Stu ent Council bought ug en Gd hx Us x 19 su danti At the connessxon srmd Mm XX hmlxer md the Qtudcnt Councll ISSUIC the cus tomer sc-runs xuth 1 amrle 1155 XXh1fllxLI'S kutmb IS xtatc Stmen Counml sponsor urn her to mam puts of the atxte A2 The lntercom bought thxouqh rnlgunne mlm hx thy Student Lounul lcnda 1 he-lpnng hind to nmpoltlnt mnounacmcnts Thi dri k, A' ' . . tlmt the Q d ' ' j K 1 - joy 1' teach' J as vell ., it - I I wr 5,1 ' fl J' -W. :jg T' 1' 3 5 i N n X K 'XIX' I 1 ' I 1 t 1 'III I' n ,www ff. Concerned with the evergrowing student population, the board has spent much time in the planning of the high school of tomorrow. This planning is evi- dent in all phases of the school program, but it can be most easily recognized in our long range building program. This building program visualized for many years by the people of our town is each year being turned from blueprints into beautiful and striking reality through the united efforts of the McAlester Board of Education, a group of public-spirited men inter- HAROLD HOPKINS MRS. Its underlying purpose is to develop a more effective relationship between parents, teachers, and students. It is the American way for a P.T.A. organization to produce miracles of improvements for our schools' wclfire with seemingly little or no effort. But those who Ire familiar with this organization know that thesc miracles are wrought through the untiring efforts on the part of parents, teachers, and adminis- trators whose greatest concern is Americas most im- port int resourcefher youth. The Student Council Howdy Card Project affords M.H.S. that neces- sary ingredient of friendliness for educational growth. ' came It's eight-thirty Monday morning September 5, 1958, The halls are filled with friendly students shouting ex- cited greetings to one another. For old friends familiar faces-for new students the Howdy Card to say a friendly hello and to extend an invitation to become our new friends. Confusion becomes chaos as we search for assigned lockers, float with the floating schedule and permit ourselves the luxury of those last few hours of unre- strained freedom. We are individuals, sure, with individual differences, but we also have a common culture which requires of its members a common set of skills. There are some things which everyone should know, which everyone who lives in our society should be able to do. So when duty whispers low thou must, we find ourselves seated quietly in one of our many class rooms. FW v ' N -'-'U :,,3.gal l V sl, v i l. Its objective is to build a better home, school and communityg to serve nation and God, combating all forces which tend to undermine these institutions. The M.H.S. Key Club, sponsored by the local Kiwanis Club and under the school leadership of Mr. Harold Worthen, has accomplished much toward these objectives. 72 Members of Students for Christ meet each Thursday noon. They assemble First Row: Gary King, james Greer, Lee jef- frey, Glenn Santino, Tommy Martin, George Henderson, SECOND ROW: Mike Rock, Chuck Tippit, Charles Tippit, Tommy Rohrer, Bill Wood, Alfred McConathy, Bill Bratton. S.F.C. The 130 members of Students For Christ, sponsored by Miss Mable Aston and Mr. Jack Berry, have found that they can do much to further Christian love and fellowship in the classrooms, halls, and on the grounds of M.H.S. The Students For Christ members are responsible for the daily scripture reading, devotionals in assembly, and the prayer before each home football game. Each month to make the organization more effective a local minister is invited to speak at the noon lunch meeting. in the auditorium where they eat and fellowship together. ag, , v 5 . Il- -6-.. FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA Future Teachers of America, sponsored by Mrs. Evelyn Carletti, provides its members zr means by which they can take a close look at teaching as a possible future profession. During the club year each member has an opportunity to substitute for teach- ers of the elementary grades. Members also assist high school teachers in such tasks as checking daily lesson assignments, regis- tering teachers during county teachers' meetings, and numerous other duties. Participation in these activities will be helpful later in regard to their decision of choosing teaching as a profession. 78 -f-,a4.....,.....- ca-. .. .... . ,gil 4 . ' 1 1 v-N' .
