H. S. stands on once belonged to the Red Man. In 1830 the US. Government and the Choctaw Nation entered into a treaty calling for the removal of the Indians to Oklahoma. This was the treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek, named for the stream where the treaty was signed. Since l9ll, the first year of publication, the yearbook has been called the 'gDancing Rabbitf' Because of our rich Indian heritage the staff has chosen an Indian theme for the l954 Dancing Rabbit and has created Hliittlc Buff to be your guide. However, many long hours are spent in meeting deadlines. Members learn by experience to do such things as layouts, write-ups, and assembly. Each yearls staff is faced by a greater problem for each annual must be better than the last. The Dancing Rabbit has as its sponsor Miss Schnieder, who keeps the one thousand and one details in motion. In general, everyone on the staff does a little of evervthing, from selling adver- tisements to literary work. Football contests of the '53 season displayed a fighting spirit never before equaled at M.H.S. This spirit was evident on the field and in the stands. The Buffaloes opened the season with Okmulgee at Jeff-Lee Stadium under the guidance of a new coach, Doyle Long. The Buffs scored twice, but lost to the Bulldogs by a score of 28-12. The second game found the Buffs playing an Sapulpa. ln the final half, the team, plagued by injuries, was pushed backward to a 33-6 defeat by the Chieftains. Our next game was played on the home gridiron against Muskogee, one of the most powerful teams in the state. The Buffs were downed 28-0. Winning their first game on the home field the Black and Gold defeated Durant in a hard game 18-7. The team was sparked by the hard driving fullback, Don Adams, who carried the ball for a grand total of 215 yards, one of the best records in high school football. Our next game with Henrietta at Cameron field saw the Buffs defeated 20-7 in spite of brilliant playing the first half. Some 750 McAlester fans attended, making 'cUperation Pigskinf, the car cavalcade to the game, a huge success. A 40 yard touchdown run and the extra point gave McAlester a 7-6 win over the Hugo Buffaloes in the next tilt at Hugo. Highlighting the Wewoka game, Don Piccolo, playing his first year, took the kickoff on his 9 yard line and went all the way for the score. With this spark the Buffs again scored before the end of the half. The Buffs ended the contest in a 13-13 standstill. ln the next district game the Buffs met Holdenville and were blanked 24-0 in a fast moving game. In the final homecoming game the Buffs dropped a decision of 33-6 to the Ada Cougars. The Buffaloes wound up their schedule with a crushing 441-7 defeat at the hands of the Seminole Chieftains. The team completed the 1953 season with the same record posted by the ,52 grid- sters. It was a record of two wins, one tie, seven losses, and outstanding sportsmanship. BH TEAM The BU team schedule included four i'A,' teams, at whose hands the Little Buf- faloes were defeated, and two HB teams over which the Buffs were victorious for a 2-4. record. .11 '7Mzd4!! Out of a twenty game schedule the Buffaloes won thirteen and dropped seven to achieve recog- nition as the ninth ranked team in the state. The Buffs amassed a i 1 BOB BRUMI-EY, Cvavh BILL HENLEY, Assistant Coach grand total of 1,070 points averaging 53.5 per game, while their combined opponents scored 934 points averaging 46.7 per game.
