We had often heard of “green freshmen”, but little did ve realize what it meant. It did not take us long however to find that we knew very little. Under the leadership of Mr. Bernice Pinkston, principal, Miss Irene Dickerson and Mr. Lucien Downey as teachers we soon begun to grow in knowledge. At the beginning of the second semester we lost three classmates: two became farmers, and one entered another school. We gained one from a near by school. We entered our sophomore year with thirteen members, one less than we had the year before. Our teachers were the same as of the preceding year. We had a very successful year. Due to the fact that we did not have the required number to main- tain a High School we entered the Sal visa High School to further our education in our Junior year. This changing of schools somewhat dis- couraged us, it caused four of our number to drop out of school. After being at Salvisa a few weeks we became accustoned to our new sur- roundings. Under the leadership of Mr. Delbert Cunningham, prin- cipal, Miss Frances Cox, Miss Vivian Isham and Mrs. Mildred Byer as teachers we completed a very successful year. Beginning to understand the reason for an education twenty-one students entered the Freshman class of the McAfee High School in September 1944. Mrs. T. G. Tamed was our principal. We enjoyed many high school activities. At the close of the year we had increased our ability to work. Our three months vacation was over all too soon. We returned and became sophomores with fifteen students in our class. Mis Lela Jane Harris came to our community and lead us in our school activit- ies as our principal. We finished our sophomore year by working hard but we felt that we had accomplished a great deal. Entering our junior year we had one less number. We welcomed Mr. H. H. Jones as principal. Still realizing that we must increase our knowledge if w'e are to have a happy future, w-e studied harder than the year before. As juniors we took part in the graduation exercises all the time wishing we might be able to reach that goal in 1948. IWMMWnw; We entered school as Seniors in September 1947. Biglit Fairview students were welcomed as members of onr class. This made us an enrollment of eighteen students. Three new teachers were also added to the faculty. Miss Mellie Matherly, Principal, Mr. Stewart M. Gaunce, Ariculture teacher, Mr. Bruce Champion, Mathmatics and Coach. Miss Neva Woods was the only teacher who had been with us during our first three years in high school. We are proud of our six boys who played on the basketball team. At the end of the first semester, James Paul Long, a veteran, withdrew from school to enter Campbellsville College. We miss him but wish him much success in his college career. The girls also had a basketball team. We played against the junior girls. We had a very good team considering the fact that we had never played before. We presented the Senior Play entitled “Deacon Dubbs”. All the seniors had parts in the play. We shall always be grateful for the opportunities given us by our parents, the Mercer County Superintendent, the Mercer County P.oard of Education and our teachers. We trust that we shall be cit- izens of whom they will not be ashamed. CLASS WILL We, the Graduating Class of 1948, do hereby bequeath to our honorable successors our multitude of virtues and vices. Other peo- ple have black vices, but ours are white. When we commit crime, we’re so sorry—sorry that we got caught. To you dear Juniors, do we oass on our souls tattered and torn though they may be. We know our successors are in doubt as to our surplus of brains, yet we wish to pass on to them our vast intellectual viewpoints. This viewpoint, I might add, is more than national. It is Internat- ional. In fact it covers the universe. It’s some viewpoint, let me tell yau! You’ll get dizzy trying to hang on to it. ■ 'A''1 ,k 7v '■ f ■ v . This can be none other than Frances Bailey. I see a young lady as the manager of a local drug store. This happens to be Imogene Warner. At Mayo Brothers’ Clinic, I see Tommie Shuck as a young interne passing from room to room with words of cheer to each of his patients. In a city in Ohio, I recognize Rose Yeager preparing the even- ing meal for her husband, who is about to return home from work. At the end of a Southern Bell Telephone line, is Jessie Watts as a successful operator. In a nearby county I see the Countv Agent, contemplating on the agricultural outlook for the coming year. This appears to be C. W. Robinson. Over the daily radio program I behold Louise Phillips as leader of a Hillbilly Band. In a quiet little home in the suburhs of a large city, I behold a loving wife giving orders to her three colored maids to prepare an exquisite meal for her husband, who is returning from a business trip. This is our classmate Adeline Springate. I recognize Maurice Woods preparing to walk down the aisle to claim a former school day sweetheart as his bride. In a progressive little city in Western Kentucky, I see Helen War- ner opening a style shop. Her stock is strictly Paris Fashions. On a lonely island in the middle of some far distant sea I see a princess with features much resembling Rosalvn Gritton. With a firm hand she rules over the island. Her husband seems to be under her rule also. They seemed to have landed there on a non-stop flight around the world and were held captives and made rulers by the natives. These visions caused me to awake from my dream. I realized that I had “dipped into the future as far as human eyes could see. Saw a vision of the world and the wonders that would be.’’ 9 i CLASS POEM Nineteen hundred forty-eight A very common date, And one you might, not ever guess Of rare and striking fate. Nineteen hundred forty-eight Please bear it in your mind, For in that year there graduates A class of rarest kind. A class made up of stellar poets. Writers, sages, wits, A class upon whose towering brow The crown of knowledge sits. Original and very gay. With little fault, it’s true, We refuse perfection’s laurels, But claim such honor due. Now' there was Carol, who gayly sang. And Frances, who could act, Rosalyn knew Arithmetic, No charge for brains she lacked. Azille liked geography, Martha Jane won a prize For D.A.R. at every turn. And Maurice with work grew wise. Jessie, Hazel, Eunice, and Louise, Each with her musical talent. Striving for a life of ease. Helen, Imogene, and Adeline so gallant. Were always trying to please. Rose was sweet cheerleading, While Roy Lee, with love, was pleading. Tommie was running up the basketball score. With C. W. trying to make more. Nineteen hundred forty-eight With it down in red, Among the other great world dates; Bear it in your mind. Aloft our banner flies.
