Mr. Schmidt [ F W U j ' ! ♦ r Mr. Green Ms. Mackey Ms. Fountain Ms. Cottingham 18 Administrative Staff The 1984-85 McAdory High School Administrative Staff was one of the best ever They were the main agen- cy of the school working constantly to keep the school going at its highest capacity They worked diligently to Insure that McAdory ranked with the top schools in Jefferson County McAdory has thus excelled In academics, as well as sports and other extracurricular activities The staff was again led by the principal, Ms Nell Salamone The Community School activities excelled this year under the direction of Randy Haught The counselors, Ms. Vines, Ms Plowden. and Ms Bess worked hard helping students with career and college decisions The Vice- Principals who supervised everything it seems were Mr Frank Green and Mr Russell Schmidt Other staff members included Ms Cottingham, Ms, Fountain, Ms, Mackey, Ms, Adkins, Ms, Smith, and Ms Nicholas, Ms. Vines Ms. Bess Mr. Haught Ms. Nicholas 19 English English has always been one of the most important parts of our lives The English teachers at McAdory worked hard to improve language and gram- mar skills This year a new English pro- gram, called Advanced Placement English, allowed college bound students to prepare skills necessary for Honors Placement in college and gave them the opportunity to earn college credit The English teachers included Ms Atchison, Ms Myers, Ms Gambles, Ms. lackson, Mr. Sims, Ms Peyton, Mr. Williams, Ms Abernathy, Ms Parsons, and Mr Staggs Ms. Parsons Mr. Sims Ms. Myers Ms. Jackson Mr. Williams Ms. Abernathy Ms. Peyton 20 Mathematics The math program at McAdory was one in which students were given the oppor- tunity to grasp and take hold of knowledge and logic as it is known today The ad- vanced math courses such as trigonometry were provided for students preparing for college The math teachers included Mr. Trippe, Ms Key, Ms Hall, Ms Brown, Ms Neal, Mr. Williams, and Ms. Cooley. Mr. Trippe Ms. Hall Ms. Brown Mr. Williams Ms. Cooley 21 Physical Education Physical education taught the neecj for proper care of the body as well as the proper regard for the values of sportsmanship The Physical Education Department was headed by Coach At- chison, Coach Brasseale, Coach Byrom, Coach Powell. Coach Benavidez, Coach Reeder, Ms. Brewer, and Ms. Tarver. Ms. Brewer Ms. Tarver Coach Brasseale Coach Benavidez Coach Powell Coach Byram 22 1 Finer Arts Vocational education has always been a strong point in McAdory ' s cur- riculum The BOE Dept led by Ms Madison, Ms Williams, and Ms Hall won state and national recognition The FFA which continued its award winning tradition was again led by Mr lackson, Mr Caddell, and Mr Swaffield; also Ms Brunner and the FH.A were honored in stale competition The Fine Arts Dept coordinated by Mr Beckner, Ms Bryant, and Mr Douglas added just the right touch, and the Library Arts stafi, anchored by Ms McAdory, added a full time computer instructor, Ms Beckner The Language Arts were again led by Ms Carter whose trilingual talents both excited and motivated McAdory ' s foreign language students Ms. Madison Ms. Hall Ms. Williams Mr. Jackson Mr. Caddell Mr. Swaffield Ms. Brunner Mr. Beckner Mr. Douglas Ms. Bryant Coach Reeder Ms. McAdory Ms. Beckner Ms. Carter 23 Social Sciences Social Studies has always been a way to learn about heritage, history, and government Through the past, students were taught about the future After learn- ing world history through studies with Mr, Chaney, Dr Kelly enlightened students with anecdotes of American lifestyles Government and Economics at Mc dory has been taught for many years by Mr Baker, and Mr Swiney has always delighted nintfi graders with tales of Alabama ' s past while Ms Atchison and Mr. Mize constructed a thorough foundation through Civics and seventh grade History Mr. Baker Mr. Swiney Ms. Atchison Mr. Mize 24 Natural Sciences Through ihe study ol siience. MtAdory studenls tened, studied, experienced, and learned about the ivironnient, space, time, and of course about life together The science staff for 8-4-H5 included Ms nchors. Biology and Advanced Biology, Mr Ander- in. Chemistry: Ms Brasher, Mr Cook, and Coach ' rom lunior High Sciences, and Mr Holmes, ninth ade Science and Biology Ms. Anchors Mr. Anderson Ms. Brasher Mr. Cook 25 Individualized Education Special Education requires the patience which has been uniquely founcJ at McAdory, and the students at McAdory have truly received in- dividualized instruction The teachers included, Mr Dollar. Mr Rabon, Mr Davis, Ms Marshall, and Ms Mckinney These teachers have received degrees in special areas of education which in- clude EC, LD. and EMR Each teacher in the Special Education Dept completed numerous lEP forms, lesson plans individualized per student by subject Through their combined eltorts students at McAdory truly receive a special education .wk 26 Mr. Rabon Sff i Nutrition Center As well as many other oulslanding programs al our school, the lood nulr(- lion program was one ol the best Ms Bailey who again let) the lunihroom slati was responsible tor tantaslii lunches E ery lunchroom statt member worked al planning meals, and preparing them within the school budget All the students at McAdory appreciated the hard work put forth by Ms Bailey and the enlire stall 27 The Support Staff The custodians performed |obs that many times went unnoticed by students and faculty They worked hard before, during, and after school to insure that the school and grounds were clean, upheld, and protected The staff proved to be hardworking, reliable, and efficient The staff included Dan Byrd, Thomas Henton, Caroline Byrd, lanet Collier, and Helen Wilkenson. 28 Bus Drivers Gas Crew The bus drivers and gas crevs were a vilal pari in the daily lives of ihe students at McAdory The bus drivers, lull of patience, got the students safely to school and back every day Through the rainy, icy, and sunny weather they worked hard to make sure that the students had a sale, trouble-tree ride The gas crew made sure that the buses were capable of this task These people had to get up earlier and get home later than most people Yet through it all they did not complain or falter 29 30 31 The JEFCO Board McAdory has always been an integral part of the Jefferson County Board of Education, the largest suburban school system in Alabama. This year the School Boi again consisted of five citizens, elected by popular vote, to serve staggared, six-year terms as the decision and policy-making t)ody The Board operated under the co mittee system to approve educational programs, new construction projects, and employ the necessary personnel to effectively operate the school system. The bo; members have t)een listed here in the order of seniority; Mrs, Robert W. Cwin, twenty-four years, Mr Bill Mewbourne, four years, Dr Kevin Walsh, two years: V Mary Buckelew, one and one-half years; Mr )im R Hicks, since November, 1984 The president of the School Board served as ex-officio member of each committt This year Dr. William E. Burkett served the Board as superintendent and secretary, and he was responsible for carrying out the Board ' s decisions. Varsity Basketball The Varsity Basketball team showed promise of things to come by receiving lirsl place honors in the Fultondale Tip-Oft tournament, which was one of the first tests on their schedule They had wins over Tarrant. Gardendale, Brookwood and made a run at Hueytown that was unequaled by Hayes in the City-County Tournament. McAdory paced Hueytown until the last seconds of the game, but they saw their best game ot the season fall into the loss column due to a desperation shot at the sound of the buzzer, still the game against Hueytown proved that the lackets were alive and fighting. T State Contenders The Wrestling Team did very well in their 1984-85 season under the direc- tion of Coach Atchison The team consisted of Danny Pace, Dale Sanders. Mike Sexton. Evan Cox. Tommy Hill. Chris Stokes. Richard Adams, left Salamone, Craig Warren, and Sammie Price As the season approached its finale the sec- tional wrestling tournament was held at McAdory Sammie Price entered the tournament at 21 and and Sexton, Adams and Sanders earned winning records and hopeful hearts onto the mats McAdory took second place in the team standings although they forfeited five weight categories Those who wrestled, wrestled well, Sammie Price took first place in the heavyweight category. They participated in both the annual jamboree and Dental Clinic, Their year started early for on August 10th Band Camp began Under the direction of Howard Beckner, the band was led ontothe field by Teresa Browning and Chris Thomason The band had a great season; they performed diligently and delighted their fans 134 Small But Mighty The ma|oretle squad of 1984-85 had a very exciting year They attended camp at the University of Montevallo where they received second place in their performances along with a first place award for most spirited They worked very hard and received excellent ratings at competition They were successful in delighting the audience with their performances The maprettes entertained the crowd on homecoming with fire batons Closing the season the band performed a country western show in which the majorettes par- ticipated by dressing up, singing and dancing This year ' s squad consisted of lulie Bush, jamie Browning, Kelly Tubbs, Lisa Sellers, Teresa Crowe, and head maiorette Kristy Biddy Their sponsor was Ms Dell Bryant 136 JJ . Constant and True The 1984-85 MHS Colorguard had a spectacular season beginning with sum- mer camp at the University of Tennessee where they received an excellent rating at a marching competition The Colorguard consisted of ten members; they were Latanya Carter - Head, lennifer Everitt, Gale Story, janeese linrlght, Andrea Shores, Kristy Kornegay, Tammy Robinson, Vanessa Barlow, lulie Wall, and Mitchelle Toxey They were sponsored and guided by Mrs Margaret Beckner The long hours spent in practice and camps by the group paid off in successful exhibitions of their outstanding skills and overall showmanship. A- : 137 Concert Band The 1984-85 McAdory Band ' s concert season was well underway by the time they prepared for their Christmas performance. Their Christmas concert was December 18th and proved to be successful for the band. After the Christmas concert the band began to prepare for District competition They raised money throughout the year for new uniforms by selling various pro- ducts. Several members of the band tried out for All County, but only a few were selected. These members Included lerry Craig, Latanya Carter, Glen Glover, Amy MIxon, and Sidney Minnefield, Some of their goals included receiving a 1 at Distnct and continuing on to State competition They also hoped to fund a project to attend an out of state performance which allowed the Seniors one last band thp before graduation The band was, for the 13th consecutive year, under the leadership of band director, Howard Beckner. Under the leadership of Mr Beckner the band accomplished the many goals they set. 138 )r. High Band The |r High Band improved by leaps and bounds through accomplishing the art of reading music, marching, and playing a musical instrument They helped motivate the students by participating in the pep rallies They also had a new experience by marching during the half time of the Homecoming game and playing in the stands at several other games The students worked hard to master the skills that they wanted to learn Mr Beckner patiently worked with the students to help them accomplish their goals They worked with the Sr High Band helping them in their fundraising projects Without the help of the |r. High Band the band boosters could not have met their fundraising attempts. ' ' i ' J 139 i. Noteworthy Groups The |r and Sr High Choirs worked vigorously in preparation for Iheir various concerts Mr Douglas stnved to conduct them in sight reading, harmony, and lead vocals in both contemporary and classical music They performed at the Christmas concert and the spring concert They also attended local competitions where they performed well 140 McAdory Singers The 1984-85 McAdory Singers performed at their highest capacity this season They sang for open house in October The All County Concert was held on November 15th where they sang with other choirs in Jefferson County at Boutwell Auditorium In January, 1984, they attended District Competition at Birmingham Southern College where they received a 1 which indicates a superior rating Their future goal was to receive such a rating at State The McAdory Singers were again under the excellent supervision of Mr Douglas The officers for the year were Warren Slaughter, Pres , Teresa Browning, Vice Pres , Lone Hardin, Librarian, and Donita Wilson, Sec These officers encour- aged the members to perform their best which contributed to their great success The members for the 1984-85 year were Steve Cray, Darin larvis, Randy Gamble, Sidney Minnefield, Warren Slaughter, Lone Hardin, Shelley Hardin, Donita Wilson. Andy Woods and Wanda Phillips 141 Spanish Club The Spanish Club consisted ot Advanced Academic students who were eager to learn the culture and language ot the Hispanic speaking countries With the help ot the Spanish Club sponsor, Ms Carter, exchange students from Guatemala were able to attend school at McAdory and live with students The Spanish Club activities ranged trom an annual cheese sale and banquet, to a trip to Central America during A E A The group excelled in their Spanish skills as well as in their knowledge ot the culture and customs of a different land. 142 French Club The French Club was comprised ot present and tormer students of French I. II, and III It was an extension of the academic program which invited them to parlicipale in the social aspects of a people whose language they studied They were encouraged to use French as a spoken language, and to practice the finer French graces The 1984-85 sponsor was Ms Carter This years officers were Amy Brantley, Pres , Susan Stewart, Vice Pres , Stephen Fulmer, Sec , and Christie Gregg, Treas French Club 143 The FFA had a good year The Land |udging contestants placed first in coun- ty, dlstncl, and participated in state tinals The Public Speech contestants placed first in county, district, and also participated in state finals Eight students earned the states highest honor Many students participated in local and state contests ranging from Horticulture. Forestry, Building and Construction, Mechanics, and Livestock judging There were over two hundred active members in FFA this year They all showed great participation in these activities. The sponsors again were Mr Swaffield, Mr Caddell, and Mr lackson 144 K£ .. -J 145 W 1 FBLA The 1984-85 FBLA took on promising challenges that only they could fulfill This included a candy sale which proved to be very successful thanks to the devoted efforts of the FBLA officers and nnembers They coordinated a Free Enterprise Week in which speaker conveyed to the students the importance of Entrepreneur- ship The McAdory Chapter FBLA competed in District competition at Banks High School which turned out to be quite successful The FBLA sponsors included Ms Madison, Ms. Williams, and Ms. Hall 146 FHA The FHA, with the combined efforts of their sponsor, Ms Brunner, successfully achieved the many goals they set forth for themselves. One of their goals was to help youth assume the roles in society through Home Economics education in areas of personal growth, family life, vocational preparation and community in- volvement. The executive committee included Sherry Holder, Rhonda Williams, Vickie Reid, Tashauenia Lawrence, and Robin Hyde The purposes of the FHA were to provide opportunities for self-development and preparation for family and community living and tor employment: to strengthen the function of the fami- ly as a basic unit of society; to encourage democracy through cooperative action in the home and community, to encourage individual and group involvement in helping achieve world-wide brotherhood, to institute programs promoting greater understanding between youth and adults, to provide opportunities for decision making and for assuming responsibility, to become aware of the multiple roles of men and women in today ' s society, and to develop interest in home economics, home ecomonics careers, and related occupations 147 Art Club The Art Club, sponsored by Ms. Bryant, showed its true colors this year by contributing their talents to the coordination of every major event in the school. In the spring of ' 84 they added a trace of heaven to the )unior Senior Prom. In the fall of 84 they assisted the Annual Staff by creating the backdrop which was the setting for an Evening in Paradise Their year climaxed in the annual spring Art Show They were led by President, Debbie Hayes; Vice Presi- dent, Burt Earley; Treasurer, Luther Caffee; and Secretary, Jonathan Pace Several students ' works were exhibited in art shows around the state. Works were shown at the Atlanta Museum of Art, the Superintendent ' s Show, and the lefferson County Annex Show Some students were eligible for scholar- ships; one to Atlanta College of Art and one to Montevallo. Some of their future projects included a National Scholastics project in January, their annual art show, and a donut sale to raise money for art supplies. Thanks to the leadership of Ms. Dell Bryant the art club has excelled in individual artistic development Included among these individuals were Debbie Hayes, Burt Earley, and Luther Caffee Congratulations to all the struggling artists! Speech and Drama The Speech and Drama Croup was under the direction of Ms Mary Anchors, She worked hard sharing her l nowledge of the theater and arts with her students The students experimented with make-up, character development, basic dialogue, and staging directions Library Assistants The library assistants tasks included everything from helping people check out books, to turning in books or running errands for Ms. McAdory. Although they often went unnoticed, without them the library would not have functioned properly The library was headed by Ms Marjorie McAdory who capably performed. In 1984-84, the Library Assistants were Lome Whaley, Vicki Crenshaw, Roderick Poe, Toni Brown, Dean Killingsworth, and Todd Childers. 1-1 Student Council The Student Council has been active once again in many ol the school functions On October 5th, they had a Homecoming Dance in the old gym after the game Th( dance was a big success They used their own chairs, lights, and sound system in many of the activities They conducted all student body elections from Homecomlnf] Queen to Senior Who ' s Who Their sponsor, Ms Hall, spent much of her time working for the many elections and activities The judicial Council included Chrr Thomason, Richard Riley, and Damn jarvis The Student Council officers for the 84-85 year were Alan Fuller, Pres , Cary Hockersmilh, Vice Pres , )oni Gamble, Treas, VKki Glover, Sec , Teresa Browning, Chaplain, and Lisa Sellers, Parliamentarian Thanks to the dedication and hard work of these officers through the guidance of Msl Hall, the Student Council has proved successful in all of Us endeavors They sold doughnuts in November to raise money for a needy family in the area, they were ver j proud of this accomplishment and planned for more successful projects such as this one in the future k 150 151 iTC Tri-Hi-Y The 1984-85, Kappa, Tri-Hi-Y Club had a very successful year They were more involved than ever In school activities They purchased and placed three benches to beautify the school Each month they sponsored a special outside pro|ect that related to helping others One month the club presented a comical fairytale play. Cinderella. at the Children ' s Hospital The club worked hard at upholding Christian atmosphere inside and out- side school. This club was sponsored by Ms Abernathy Six senior officers led the club Tracy Smith was the President. Gale Story was the Vice- President. LaTanya Carter was the Secretary. Darlene Weaver was the Chaplain. Teresa Brown- ing was the Treasurer, and Sherrie Holder was the Reporter These outstanding ladies had a great year as usual and made many contributions to the school and community It is hoped that they will continue helping others for years to come 152 Hi-Y In 198-4-85 Ihe Alpha Omega Hi-Y, sponsored by Dr Kelly, had a very active year The club promoted moral values and high Christian standards in a learning environment Each year the Hi-Y presents an award to a member ot the faculty who promotes these high standards The officers tor the current year were Alan Fuller Pres , David Carson Vice-Pres , and Sammie Speigner Chap Some ot their goals were money making pro|ects which would enable them to fulfill their desire to help others They raised most of their money by having car washes They worked closely with the Tri-Hi-Y in many of their endeavors because of their similiar standards and goals Dr Kelly has done a remarkable |ob with the Hi-Y His leadership and guidance qualities has enhanced the members and all of their activities. The junior class worked very hard underthe leadership of Ms Tarver and the other class sponsors The com- municators, officers and the entire class put forth a lot of effort throughout the school year in various fund raising projects. Ms Bryant headed the decorating committee; the dance floor was adorned with balloons and silver streamers, creating a shimmer of heaven. The night reached its climax when the King and Queen were announced. When the time came Mr Schmidt announced Miss Stephanie Watson who was chosen as Miss Congeniality by her peers Miss Lone Hardin was chosen fourth alternate; Miss Kristy Biddy was the third alternate The second alternate was Miss Melissa Wnghl, The excitement built as Miss Teresa Shaw wasannounced as the first alternate- Then Miss loni Gamble took her first walk as McAdory ' s new reigning Queen 174 I eresa Shaw Miss Ste Spirit Week This year, as usual, at Homecoming the true McAdory spirit came alive through school-wide participation in costume competitions called Spirit Week Each day the enthusiasm built as the students dressed and |Oined in the excite- ment Spirit Week was the time when the students united in support for the football team and the entire school They dressed differently every day until the spirit reached its peak at the Homecoming pep rally The week was filled with floats, lovely ladies, and class rings It ended with a festive Homecoming Dance which truly added to the Homecoming spirit It was a festival of black and gold, memories, moments, and minutes that will live on. It L ' 1 -n. 176 J m I L The holiday celebrations at McAdory have always included the Christmas Door Decoration Contest The Christmas doors have traditionally served to spread the Christmas spirit to all those in the school The vi inners this year were Best of Show, Mr. Dollars nth grade homeroom, Mr Holmes ' llth grade homeroom, and Mr Swat- field ' s I2lh grade homeroom The Senior High winner was Mrs, lackson ' s 10th grade homeroom and the lunior High winners were Mr Mize s 9th grade homeroom and Mr Sim ' s 7th grade homeroom The Most Original over all was Mrs Brewer ' s 10th grade homeroom The two honorable mentions were Mrs Anchors ' 1 1th grade homeroom and Mrs Carter s 1 1th grade homeroom. Senior 1-Jackson Scholar Bowl Success The 1983-8-4 Scholars Team, lead by four seniors, proved to be a great suc- cess They finished 3rd in the county tournament behind Minor and Garden- dale The team then went to Walker for the Walker College Invitational They finished up the season with a 1st place win and the Invitational Championship This year the team tned a new system It consisted of sophomores and juniors as well as seniors The team worked after school preparing lor upcom- ing tournaments The team was young, but they demonsrated excellent scholarship and sportsmanship The new system worked for the best We look forward to it becoming a tradition at M H,S The team members were Alan Fuller, David Bush, Debbie Hays, Sammie Speigner, Mark Bria, Amy Brantley, Kristi Johnson.
