Her court consisted of: first alternate Renee Morrisg second alternate Marsha Poseyg third alternate Jerri Corkreng and fourth alternate Melody Brasher. Miss Eva Allen was selected by the contestants as the 1982 Miss Congeniality. The Junior court consisted of queen Erices Sandersg alternate Angela Patterson. Each day of that week calls for a special attire. The days were Monday, Cowboy and Indian Day, Tuesday, Jersey Dayg Wednes- day, Punk-Rock Day, Thursday, Gangster Day, Friday, 50's day. To complete the festivities, on Friday the pep rally was held on the new stadium for agigantic spirit-sounding gala event. The Alpha Omega's display of jacket pride was used as the setting for the Homecoming court's pictures. Also during this week the Juniors were surprised and delighted by the return of their Senior rings. The Student body chose Miss Renee Morris as 1982 Homecoming Queen, she was escorted by Greg Thomas. The Senior Court consisted of Marsha Posey, escorted by Chris Fields, Allison Hardin, escorted by Jake Carr and Shannon Williams escorted by Anthony Burrel. The Junior Homecom- ing Court was Rhonda McMillan, escorted by Ed- die Daniel, Tomunda Reese, escorted by Eric Benisong Leslie Beckner, escorted by Doug Jolly and Terri Crumpton, who was the Junior Queen, was escorted by Dale Roberts. The judges' task was difficult, but they finally selected Miss Jennifer Crump- ton as the new Jr. High Queen, her alternate Miss Doree Davis, second alternate Miss Andrea Shores, and Kathy Hawkins was chosen as Miss Congeniality. Home games packed the stadium, for everyone was thrilled by the new heights of dignity and class which were shared by all. New seats provided more comfort and better vision than the old ionesiflihad ever offered. Although some ad- ijustments had to be made, teachers, students, parents, and alumni quickly expressed their pride and gratitude for fthe new stadium through donations, contributions and various fund raising projects. The winners this year were: 1st place, Mr. Holmes' room, second place, Mrs. Brunner's roomy third place, Mrs. Brewer's room, also honorable mention awards to Mrs. Anchors, Mr. Williams, Mrs. Brasher, Mr. Cook, Mrs. Kelly, Mr. Mize, and Mrs. Krause. .qu -,,a4 l +1 ILLIJILIL ILLHJIJIJ Of all achievements at McAdory, the annual Blood Drive is annually among the most outstanding. In '82, one- hundred eighty-two people gave a total of 160 pints in a charitable effort sponsored by the Red Cross. This 13 !0 in- crease in generosity on the part of students and faculty made McAdory the 3rd highest school in county-wide donations. Disap- pointed by Jones Valley, Holt and Fairfield the Jackets played what might be termed the game of their lives in a 3 to 2 defensive struggle at Gardendale. Early in the season, they gained an absolutely sweet victory over their cocky rivals Midfield, ,and rolled over Pinson Valley and Abrams on their way to a Homecoming victory over Brookwood. Guest speaker Pat Sullivan highlighted the evening with a helpful word for the departing seniors and the returning underclassmen. Awards were also given. Thanks goes out to Mrs. Bailey for a wonderful meal. Only two weeks after being chosen as cheerleaders, they won second place at the N.C.A. clinic at Mt. Brook. They also ranked superior at a U.C.A. clinic held at Ole Miss. With 9 blue ribbons, 1 red ribbon, 2 Gold Championship ribbons and atrophy, these girls proved themselves worthy of each award. As a first year sponsor, Kathy K.R. Peyton gained the respect of a veteran by being more than just a sponsor. Of the ten members eight were sophomoresg Steve Gray, David Bush, Woody Thompson, Shawn Bice, Kerry Hill, Allan Fuller, Tim Hogan and Sammy Price. There were two Seniors on this year's team, Steven Mebius and Norman Carter. The top performers and high scorers on the 82-83 team were sophomore heavyweight Sammy Price and Senior 134 pounder Steven Mebius and Sr. Norman Carter at 147. Coach Joe Powers did an excellent job as Varsity and Jr. High coach but he also did a fine job as the initiator of the new elementary wrestling team which performed ex- hibition matches before the matches. Another new addition to the wrestling scene were the Mat Maids. The girls were sponsored by Mrs. Heilman. The girls were as follows: LaTanya Carter, Mellisa Wright, Gail Story, Tammy Bittle, Teresa Shaw. The team showed promise of things to come by taking 3rd place in the Fultondale tournament which was one of the first tests on their schedule. They enjoyed the support of the school which was thrilled by the exciting come-from-behind vic- tories. Led by 5 experienced Seniors, Red Todd, Anthony Whittaker, Chris Fligby, and Freddy Young, the Jackets fought hard in order to reach their goals. Congratulations to this fine group of young men. Coach Benavidez was a helpful influence on the team's season, as they increased their statistics week by week. The school and Varsity team appreciate the support that was given by the B- Team in 1982-83. KULHSUTVSF McAdory's Varsity Baseball team was an eye-opening powerhouse in 1982 as they came back from a dismal start to an outstanding season. On a local scale the team captured the 3A county champion- ship in a tournament during which Vincent Bo Jackson and Rex Todd were chosen as the Most Valuable players in the playoff games. Vincent Jackson's .490 batting average earned him twenty homeruns and a national record. He was also recognized by the New York Yankees in their second-round draft. Though they faced tough competitions in Minor and Fulton- dale, the team managed to pull off a number of wins. Awards include 2nd place in county competition and 3rd place in state meets. Vincent Jackson, Eric Benison, Bobby Pippens and the Alabama High School Track Tourna- ment. At state competition Vincent Jackson won the state decathlon and Eric Benison came in 3rd. The Girl's Track Team also had a very impressive season. Their awards include: 1st place in regional meets, 2nd place in county competi- tion, and 3rd place in state tour- naments. As the season progressed, the team won 4 out of 5 triad meets. fffffkk' .Z flrnl' gmsflu '42 in 4 T The 1982 Girls Volleyball team was able to expand its limits this year. Thanks to Mrs. Salamone and the coaching staff the team benefitted by new olympic style volleyball set. This helped the team, which was led by returning seniors, to improve not on- ly their ability, but also the class of the sport volleyball at McAdory. Kathy Peyton was in charge of the girls, and she greatly aided them in many ways such as teaching, com- petition and sportsmanship. For a group of so many new players the GirI's Basketball team made a very good showing of itself in 1982-83. The team had three return- ing seniors and fought hard to win victories. Coach Terry Brasseale en- couraged the girls to develop a hard-working attitude in games and practices. As the season progressed the girls showed what they had learn- ed and made McAdory proud of its lady Jackets. This year's junior high wrestling team was comprised of a good balance of both seventh graders and ninth graders. Providing leadership on the Junior High Wrestling Team were freshmen wrestlers Danny Pace, Dale Sanders, Gerald Watford, Brett McBrayer, Earl Northfleet, Richard Adams, and Bert Early. Next year the following seventh grade wrestlers will be the foundation of the Jr. High wrestling team: Robby Scott, Wilber Adams, Rodney Woods, Jimmy Dennise, and Raymond Price. The Junior High wrestling team was coached by Joe Powers. 3 I' XP-D043 4 U ' The Junior High Basketball team were up-and-coming this year. Usually the team is overshadowed by the Senior High teams but not this year. School support rose to a new height this year as everybody en- joyed following the team through their season. Coaches Wayne Byram and Gary Jackson were pleased with the team's performance and enjoyed leading the McAdory Junior High Basketball team to many victories. This year was no excep- tion. The Singers performed at the Christmas Festival, Class Day, and Awards Day. For 1982-83, the Singers were Greg Hand, Warren Slaughter, Teresa Browning, Tammy Brunner, Tina Crenshaw, Terri Crumpton, Jane Dickey, Jeff Dickey, Darrin Jarvis, Patti Martin, Annette McQuire, Darlene Roberts, Howie Simpson, Regina Smith, Terri Williams, and Darrin Wilford. Under the direction of James Douglas, they completed many county and state competitions successfully. This program is in conjunction with the Alabama- Guatemala Committee of Partners of America, during which two Guatemalan vocational students spent five weeks working with the McAdory office staff. During the past three years, Spanish students have traveled to Hispanic lands such as Guatemala and the Yucatan Penin- sula where they have studied historical ruins and practiced their Spanish under the direction and guidance of their sponsor, Vanessa Carter. One of the most important functions of the French Club was the annual cheese sale, organized each year by sponsor Vanessa Carter. The Foreign Language Banquet seemed to be the highlight of bilingual studies at McAdory. In the coming year, the club hopes to increase its member- ship and knowledge of the French language and culture. LLIHI The Hi-Y celebrated its tenth an- niversary of service at McAdory this year. The club performed many ser- vices to the school and community, including sponsoring an Indian girl in Oklahoma. Officers in 1982-83 were Greg Thomas, Lance Tucker, Chris Fields, Micheal Riley, and Kyle Good- win. Sponsored by Dr. Thomas Kelly, the group produced a Homecoming Float and other beneficial projects. 'L'l.igI.-l.i.L-Y ln 1982-83 the Tri-Hi-Y ladies especially enjoyed this annual Tri-Hi- Y breakfast. They were proud to welcome their new advisor Mrs. Mary Anchors. The Tri-Hi-Y and Mrs. An- chors, an active sponsor of many clubs, looked forward to a year of projects and fellowship. The band has proven to be a very successful organization on the McAdory campus by consistently receiving Superior ratings throughout the state. This included a three day camp at Auburn University this sum- mer for some sixteen staff members. There layout design, development and sales techniques were learned and then brought home for a year of hard work. The 100 Club were the brave souls who entered the business districts of repressed Bessemer, Mc- Calla and surrounding areas to sell advertising. Top ad sales people were Lance Tucker, Tracy Lambert, Chris Fields, and Pat Abbott. The Production Crew dedicated many long hours to the successful comple- tion of the '83 Jacket. Mr. Ran- dy Haught supervised the activities of the community school and aided the general staff in many ways. Mr. Frank Green, Assistant Principal was in charge of discipline and student attendance. His secretary, Ms. Ailene Adkins, was a great help in dealing with check ins and outs and absenteeism. Miss Martha Vines and Mrs. Carol Reed, McAdory's two counselors, dealt with new enrollments, career-related activities and guidance problems. Mrs. Margie Cottingham, the official school book- keeper organized all financial mat- ters. Mary Fountain and Evelyn Goodwin handled the registers, lunch tickets and office management in their role as administrative secretaries.
