Then you can look forward with confidence, and back without regrets. Be yourself - but be your best self. Dare to be different and to follow your own star And don ' t be afraid to be happy. Enjoy what is beautiful. ? Believe that those you love, love you. Listen to those whom the world may consider uninteresting, Each person has, in himself, something of worth. Disregard what the world owes you, and concentrate on what you owe the world. Forget what you have done for your friends, and remember what they have done for you. SL d ' • f ' H. M ■No matter how troublesome the cares of life may seem to you at times , this is still a beautiful world . . . And you are at home in it , as a child at home in his father ' s house. ' ifcrffj. 10 Above all, remember that God helps those who help themselves. Act as if everything depended upon you, and pray, for everything depends upon God. 11 A more dedicated, loyal, and sincere person than Mrs. Mc- Dowell, you will not find at McAdory High School. She has been a sister, a mother, and a friend to all, with patience and understanding. With her pleasant personality, she has listened to our problems with an admirable smile and encouraged us when we were dis- heartened. These qualities and many more have made us more aware of her dearness to us and have won her the admiration of both faculty and students. For being what you are and for your loyal service, the 1971-72 Yellow Jacket Staff, voicing the sentiment of the student body, affectionately dedicate this year ' s annual to you, Mrs. Brenda McDowell. ia ACTIVITIES The 1971 Homecoming could be termed as a great success. Chrisie Campbell was crowned Home- coming Qjeen with the naming of her court during halftime. The ballgame ended with a much deserved victory for the team. The theme of the dance, Remember . . . In the Summertime, was carried out with beautiful decorations done by the Stu- dent Council and backed up with music of the Quadriga, A special thanks goes to Mrs. Kinnaird and the Student Council for such a wonderful job. The participa- tion of the band and majorettes added greatly to boost spirit. The spirit that was shown by the faculty and students alike has been one of the greatest shown at McAdory and will be remembered by the 1972 graduating class. 14 16 17 BEAUTY 18 r CONTEST 19 TAP-IN TO NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY LIBRAE Y ASSISTANT J ihi tmBmliitm!!tliJM wimwmLi% 20 COUNSELOR ' S ASSISTANT 21 BOOKROOM ASSISTANT OFFICE ASSISTANT 22 T BUS DRIVERS TJ T-T=l=J 23 24 I • BUSY STUDENTS? The two tough defensive teams battled scoreless for 3 quarters. Then with 11:10 left in the 4th quarter, Lanier scored on a 30-yd. pass. The PAT was no good. McAdory then received and advanced the ball from their own 20 yd. line to the Lanier 15 on a series of passes. An interception stopped the drive with about 1:00 min. left to play, and the Jackets took their first loss of the season. Despite the loss, the defense was superb. McADORY vs. FAIRFIELD Next came the Fairfield Tigers to McAdory Stadium. The Jackets took the opening kick-off and drove 50 yds. in 11 plays before fumbling on the Fairfield 30. After that neither team could move the ball until, with 1:51 left in the 3rd quarter, Fairfield scored on an 86-yd. pass. The PAT was no good. Fairfield scored again with 8:23 left in the 4th quarter. The PAT was no good. McAdory threatened to score late, going as far as the Fair- field 1, but could not get the ball in the end-zone. Final Score, McAdory - Fairfield 12. McADORY vs. JOHN CARROLL With 5 min. expired in the game, on a wet Cavalier field, McAdory forced Carroll to punt. The Jackets fumbled with the Cavaliers recovering and scoring a few plays later. Later in the same quarter Randall Bumette blocked a punt which resulted in a safety. Late in the 2nd quarter Carroll scored again and the PAT for two was good. McAdory threatened just before the half, but time ran out. Carroll scored again on an interception in the 3rd quarter and the PAT was good. Final Score, McAdory 2 - John Carroll 21. McADORY vs. HUEYTOWN After a field lighting failure at Gilmore Stadium, the Jackets fought valiantly but were forced to bow to the Hueytown eleven. Hueylown scored in the 1st and 2nd quarters, and then the defenses stiffvned. Interceptions by Tripp Edwards and Mike Veasey gave the offense field position, but a sustained drive could not be generated. The Jacket offense penetrated as far as the Goplicr 1 and again to the 5, but were denied. Final Score, McAdory - Hueytown 13. McADORY vs. LEEDS The Yellow Jackets were plagued by four fumbles in the 1st half which led to defeat at tlie hands of the Green Wave, The defense was its usual stublx)rn self, but Leeds still managed to score in the 1st and 3rd quarters. Final Score, McAdory - Leeds 13. McADQlY vs. BROOKWOOn It was the Panther ' s Homecoming and an unhappy night for McAdory. This was the first game that the Jacket defense really broke down. The lone Jacket score came on a Steve Green ' .-yd. jaunt. Final Score, McAdory 8 - Brook wood 32. McADORY vs. THOMPSON After six long weeks of trying and losing, the Yellow Jackets defeated the Thompson Warriors before a very happy homecoming crowd, and notched the first win of the season. This victory was one of the sweetest in Jacket history. Jimmy Spraggins and Bertrand Benison eacli scored two TD ' s, with Spraggins breaking loose for 60 yds. on one of his. The defense was tremendous, and was the key to the offense all night long. Final Score, McAdory 28 - Thompson 19. McADORY vs. GARDENDALE Playing before a Gardendale Homecoming crowd, McAdory attempted to pull off the up-set of the year. With 3:02 remaining in the 1st half, Spraggins scored on an option play. The PAT faUed, but the Jackets re- tained the 6 to lead at the half. Gardendale opened the 2nd half scoring and led 7 to 6. McAdory then marched to the Rocket 11 yd. line, where a Roger Hamaker field goal attempt was blocked. Capitalizing on Jacket fumbles, Gardendale scored with 3:12 remaining to play and again just before time ran out Final Score, McAdory 6 - Gardendale 22. (cont. ) McADORY vs. SPRINGUALE With an alert defense and a determined offense the Yellow Jackets defeated the Springdale Knights at McAdory Stadium. The first TD followed a Bill Early interception, and covered 61 yds. in 13 plays. With 7:03 left in the ' 2nd quarter, Jimbo Smith scored from 4 yds. out. Jimmy Spraggins dove in for the 2 points. The second TD was set up by Don Smith ' s recovery of a fumble on the Knight 20. Hank Elliot scored from the 2 yd. line, and also scored the 2 point conversion with 5; 29 left in the 3rd quarter. The defense should be congratulated on holding Springdale to 20 yds. on the ground. Final Score, McAdory 16 - Springdale 0. McADORY vs. PLEASANT GROVE Little did the Pleasant Grove Spartans know when they came to McAdory, that they were to be massacred by a wild bunch of Yellow Jackets. FIRST HALF: ' With 2:59 left in the 1st quarter, Spraggins scored on an 18-yd. run. Smi th added the 2 point conversion. Again, with 7:22 to play in the 1st half, Spraggins broke loose for a 28-yd. TD. Smith passed to Rod Swindle for the 2 points. Steve Green scored with 47 seconds left to play and Roger Hamaker kicked his first of 4 PAT ' S for the night. SECOND HALF: Following a 48-yd. Smith-to-Swindle pass, Smith scored from the four with 10:37 left in the 3rd quarter. A.BUI Early interception return for 50 yds. set up the next score by Jerry Hendrix from the 6. Mike Veasey wrapped up the scoring and fulfilled a promise with 2:55 left in the 3rd quarter on a 20-yd. punt return. The Spartans scored late in the 4th period. Final Score, McAdory 44 - Pleasant Grove 6. What a way to end a season! - ■j Gee ... I wish we could play. .- « ' -.
