Honors: Choir '49, '50, Glee Club '50. gage of' Delerminalion f' In September of 1947 the ship of Knowledge was launched in the Harbor of McAdory and started out on a long hard voyage which is known to all as The Voyage of Determination . The ship was sailing under the capable leadership of Admr H. H. King. Her capable assistants were Lt. Hodge, Lt. VVorthington, and Lt. l'earson. .-Xt our rating of Seamen 3rd Class fsophomorej we sailed through the first nine months of the voyage dodging continuously the ice bergs and the reefs in our path with such success that we were all promoted to the rate of Seamen Znd Class and received 3 months shore leave. As usual, soma liked the freedom too much and just deserted the ship at our return to deck. We lost many at the port but we also picked up others who were headed for the same destination as we. Along with our promotion we received new leaders- l.t. J. ll. lloyd, and Lt. J. G. Buck. After the order of Ship Ahoy was given we were otf to a hright new start. Even though we were sailing smoothly for a while. there were rocks we couldn't miss and that caused much work and will power to dodge and again get on our way. During this nine months we stopped at many ports, one of the largest being The Port of Money Making . Here we spent a great deal of our time. Another important stop was The Port of Honors . VVe received many of the honors offered, ranging from beauties and talent,'to scholar- ship and citizenship. At long last it was promotion time and the big time of our voyage. After bidding the Seamen lst Class goodbye in many ways: one being the prom, we were promoted to take their place. VVe docked at the harbor, the last before we reached our destination. As any crew, many more had become sea sick and failed to return after shore leave. NVQ- received new leaders again and also new crew members. They were Lt. Commandr Briggs and l.t. Commander Pass. As we pulled anchor and were on our way once again. we had little conflicts of politics but all survived: the most surviving of all being Kenneth Sanders when he realized his job of leading and directing the crew through the last nine months of the voyage. One of the first things of importance was the ordering of our brass fclass ringsj. As we were nearing our harbor, many epidemics hit our crew: one of which was very con- tagious commonly known as love sickness, but most survived. We got off our course a little and hit two of the ports we had formerly visited: The Harbor of Money Making and The Harbor of Honors . This time we stayed longer in each port and really learned their value toward our future voyages. At long last we have reached our Harbor of Diplomacy with a sigh of relief from all crew members who have survived. Here we part after our final degree of promotion, each choosing his own voyage from now on. Whether it be the voyage of Home Making or the voyage of Profession g we have a strong belief that each will succeed and anchor his ship in the Harbor of Success some day. Each leaves the ship with high hopes and dreams worth a million, but also with memories never to be forgotten. Today the President announced the appointment of Kenneth Sanders, well- known citizen of Greenwood, Alabama, as Ambassador to Russia. . ' He said the move was made to strengthen the diplomatic relations with us and Russia. Kenneth is the man we need to win the cold war with Russia and prevent the awful destruction of an Atomic VVar, said the Secretary of State, Billy Clav Horton. Sanders said he will be firm in his dealings with the Russians. 4- 4- 4- AIRPLANE CRASH INJURES 3 PEOPLE Bessemer, Ala., June 7. An airplane crash today injured three ladies, Pilot Ruby Nell Howell and passengers, Peggy Hicks and Ester Jones Summers. The cause of the crash was believed to be due to the fact that the pilot lost control while combing her hair. 4- 4- 4- FILIBUSTER Jack Marshall, Senator from Ala- bama, set a new filibuster record today. He has been talking for 78 hours. Louise Mahan, Alabama's first wom- an Representative, announced today that she will run again for that office in 1960. 4- 4- 4- COP CONVICTED ' Patrolman Fred Blackerby was ar- rested today for dealings with a bootleg ivniskey ring that is operating in part of Jefferson and Shelby Counties. 4- 4- ak SOCIETY Joyce Wesson Coiiey was recently elected President of the Nursery Club and Frances House Dennis Vice- President. It is believed that an explosion of a still in the cellar was the cause of the damage.
