CLASS P'RESIDHiT'S ADDRESS HADAM CHAIRMAN, MEMBERS OF THE FACULTY, AND FRIENDS If a subject may be termed as f1tting for this important oo casion in the lives of the seniors who will receive their dlplomas and go forth to cope nth the problems of life, opportunity cer ainly would do no injustice to the term, 'fltting' Let us briefly consider the source and definition of the word opportunity Opportunity is a word of Roman origln meaning near port, close to haven It 81gl1if198 a time or place to learn or to do something If opportunity means all this, why not sieze upon the chance to equip ourselves partially for the future? When a child is born, how much does he know? He lmows only that he is hnmgry, and he possesses other similar inherited instincts Rapidly this infant learns varlcus things by association with other human bemgs Everything the babe experiences by sight, sound, or touch makes an impression upon his mind A child who experiences many things will in later life It also closely follows that the kind of things the child experiences will influence his behavior in the future This is why children attend school The child who is exposed to much of the right kind of knowledge and records it with the inten tion of using it in the future is definitely superior to one who is not exposed to these same conditions At times our instructors, and parents as well, lost patience with us and did not expect to see many of us achieve our first goal :Ln education, graduat1on tom high school It cannot be de nied that throughout the year there has been playing and fun mak ing, for youth dearly loves a good time If young people did not engage in fr1vol1ty and gaiety, they would rapidly develop into stolcal middleaged men and women If it is true that there was playing durmg the year, it is also true that there was some d1li gent effort applled to lessons as well The scholastic records of the seniors provide evidence of this important fact Just as sure ly as these seniors have taken advantage of opportmmity thus far, it is reasonable to assume that they will contmue to do so in the future HUGH HASSEY, Presldent of 1942 t ' '- naturally be better fitted to deal with the problems he will face O e 6 . HISTORY OF THE '42 SENIOR CLASS I am beginning the history of our class from the year 1938 extending through the school year 1942 Durmng the year 1938 our dear locomotiva,'lcAdory Choo-ohoo was completely demolmshed by a terrlf1o collision with a blaz1ng fire we passengers were taking our Christmas vacation durlng the t1me, and we returned to our jobs very u happy about the horrible 1nc1dent we were dmsgusted with the fact but we were determlned to continue our traveling, ignor1ng the thought of belng on small locomotlves rather than on our former one Durlng this time one of the crew, Miss Huey, the librarian, reslgnedg and lrs Macon, whom we still have, took her place we were now transferred to small locomotives Some of the passengers were sent to the com u mty Church, some to the Agrlcul resented buing in the small places, but we were encouraged by the dream of our Beautiful 'Streamlined lcAdory , which was being built In our science department we had a new director, lr Echolsg H Grace resigned to take up I D we all liked our new director and accompllshed much w1th hlm In the fall of 1940 we were returned to our dear McAdory Streamlmed Choo choo , for which we had longed, dreamed, hoped, and prayed After the replacement we were influenced and encouraged to travel farther, but, to our surprise, we lost a me ber afthecrew Mr Stevenson, head of the English Department, became a member of the Fourth Estate, while Hrs lcGibboney took his place and Irs McKinney took charge of our English our senior year lies Hudson, our commercial teacher, began teaching in a governme t school We admit we have had a hard struggle to reach graduation, but we have forgot it since we are at the end of the journey we sincerely hope some of our passengers travel on to a high or success, and we think there will be many to do so At this time we w1sh to thank each official of the road, our conductor, hr leadory and our engineer, U s King, who helped us to complete our journey, and we believe if it had not their help, we could not have completed our course so le are leaving you new to find other jobs, and we that there will be a thousand others to take our place their high school courses been for perfectly are hoping and finish The Historian of 1942 I EVA WEBSTER . . 1 s I e , O . 0 . . . .
