CLASS P'RESIDHiT'S ADDRESS HADAM CHAIRMAN, MEMBERS OF THE FACULTY, AND FRIENDS If a subject may be termed as f1tting for this important oo casion in the lives of the seniors who will receive their dlplomas and go forth to cope nth the problems of life, opportunity cer ainly would do no injustice to the term, 'fltting' Let us briefly consider the source and definition of the word opportunity Opportunity is a word of Roman origln meaning near port, close to haven It 81gl1if198 a time or place to learn or to do something If opportunity means all this, why not sieze upon the chance to equip ourselves partially for the future? When a child is born, how much does he know? He lmows only that he is hnmgry, and he possesses other similar inherited instincts Rapidly this infant learns varlcus things by association with other human bemgs Everything the babe experiences by sight, sound, or touch makes an impression upon his mind A child who experiences many things will in later life It also closely follows that the kind of things the child experiences will influence his behavior in the future This is why children attend school The child who is exposed to much of the right kind of knowledge and records it with the inten tion of using it in the future is definitely superior to one who is not exposed to these same conditions At times our instructors, and parents as well, lost patience with us and did not expect to see many of us achieve our first goal :Ln education, graduat1on tom high school It cannot be de nied that throughout the year there has been playing and fun mak ing, for youth dearly loves a good time If young people did not engage in fr1vol1ty and gaiety, they would rapidly develop into stolcal middleaged men and women If it is true that there was playing durmg the year, it is also true that there was some d1li gent effort applled to lessons as well The scholastic records of the seniors provide evidence of this important fact Just as sure ly as these seniors have taken advantage of opportmmity thus far, it is reasonable to assume that they will contmue to do so in the future HUGH HASSEY, Presldent of 1942 t ' '- naturally be better fitted to deal with the problems he will face O e 6 .
