Shucks ! Missed again! CATS HANG TOUGH The Cats ended their 1978 football season with a 4-5 record, but several individual players turned in spectacular performances. Rick Tolbert on defense led the pack with 132 tackles, followed by Brian Fry with 110, and Tim Bodies with 77. The defensive line allowed only 14.3 points per game. Top players offensively were Jeff Germain, who carried the ball 95 times for 580 yards, and Jerry Muncy, who gained 434 yards in 67 carries. Leading scorers were Germain, Muncy, and sophomore Todd Harris all scoring 24 points each. Bill Bean on defense had 5 interceptions, and Bill Stokes averaging 35 yards per punt. He also had an awesome 70 yarder that may be a school record. Co- captains were Rick Tolbert and Bill Stokes. The most improved player was Brian Hecht. The most valuable players were Jerry Muncy and Jeff Germain on offense and Rick Tolbert on defense. Rick Tolbert was voted to 1st team All- Conference offensively and defensively. He was also elected along with Bill Bean to the Tuscola County Advertiser's Dream Team. Other All-Conference players were Dale Snyder and Bill Bean defense, Brian Fry offense. Honorable Mention went to Bill Stokes and Jeff Germain. However, in the invitationals the highest that they ranked was 2nd, which was achieved in the Big Thumb Invitational. Coach Patterson felt that the somewhat lack-luster season was due to ... lack of depth. Although we finished close in most meets, it was lack of depth that hurt us. As far as individual awards go, Tom McLane was voted M.V.P. and Mike Giddings was designated as Most Improved. The three Seniors, Don Giddings, Mike Walker and Tom McLane will be missed. Coach Patterson feels that co-captains Darryl Hool and Mike Giddings returning plus a better recruiting year will bring the Cross Country team a better season next year.
