Kitchen, 'captains The Mayville Wildcat's Cross Country team enjoyed a very successful season this past fall as they lost one dual meet and came home with a trophy in every cross country in- vitational finishing no lower than second in all these meets except the state meet where they finished third. The Wildcat's were expected by many in the area to be nothing more than a mediocre team. However, this idea was soon shown to be mistaken as the team began to run by other teams with surprising ease winning by some rather lopsided scores. The team was again paced by the super Sophomores of the team, namely, Ed Labair and Bob McLane who were the top runners for the team throughout the season. Ed was the one runner on the team who earned recognition as an All-State runner as he finished in the number ten spot of all the state participants. The other members of the varsity or top seven were Kevin Robinson, Doug Donnelly, Don Patterson, Dave Lie- ber, and Marty Crane. As a result of the teams rather surprise showing high in the ratings, the team's coach, Mr. Weaver, was selected to be on the ballot for the Coach of the Year Honors. Coach Weaver placed second to Carson City Crystals coach in the voting. This stands to prove that the team, ran as a team, and were instructed well by their coach who brought them to the place where they were able to perform well and to do their best, first of all for the team and then for themselves as individuals. All in all, it was a great year for the Mayville Cross Country team! 105 Varsity Basketball Brent Oberle racks up a few yards against St. Mary's as 33 Tim Raymond and 44 Andy Eremic lead the way. The young Varsity Wildcat team depend- ed on the best defense in the league, 58.3 points per game to set them through the season. The deliberate game plan netted the Cats a 11-5 league record and a 16-7 overall record, two of those wins coming in district competition where they knock- ed off the Deckerville Eagles for the title, 48-46.
