THROUGH Whatever we, the Senior Class of 1943, will be doing in the years to come, we shall never forget our high school days. Memories of our joys, our sorrows, and our escapades there will linger with us through the years. For it was there in four short years that the happiest moments of our lives were spent. We learned to know Mayville High, its warm and cheery atmos- phere, its hidden secrets, and above all, its uncon- querable spirit of final victory held open to all who passed through its doors. T lt meant more to us than a mere building. For all of us realized and felt that it had a soul, one that could laugh when we were happy, share our deepest secrets, and sympathize in our sorrows. Four years ago, how long it now seems, as timid freshmen it made us welcome. We learned then that the school held a tradition. The Freshman-Mixer burst the barrier of loneliness and we became an intricate part of school life. We held no qualms about coming back in our sophomore year. The school beckoned to us and we answered its call. We were all back. This was the year we would come into our own, and we did. Members of our class made the varsity athletic teams. infantile Paralysis came and went, but school life carried us on. This was the year we groaned under the burden of World l-listory. We forgot our shyness as dates became the rule rather than the exception. It was the year we had a new principal and several new faces made their appearance on the teaching staff. That year will long linger in our memories. When we came back the next fall things were different. We felt a change coming but we could not fathom it. We came to face new responsibility. Not only must we uphold the tradition of successful past seasons in athletics and debate, but the spirit of National Defense gripped us tighter in its grasp. ZA 7366 CAEQZA 027 THE YEARS Cn December seventh we knew the answer. We knew what it was to have WAR. We now had a new respon- sibility to face. Gone were the carefree days of the years before, we must train ourselves for the big job of winning the war. This, too, was the year of our Prom, but it was not the same as in former years. The dark cloud of war seemed to hover over our lives like a phantom. We shall never forget our Junior Year. And then we were seniors. l'laughty and proud we were now at the top of the ladder. It was our year, ours to command and rule. We knew every- thing there was to know. Vet we could never lose sight of the fact that our job was to get ready for the war and the post-war period to follow. We did make progress, Qur football team showed more of the unconquerable spirit of previous teams than it had showed for the previous two years, our basket- ball team did better, we had a good debate record. We did our part to aid in the war effort. We sacri- ficed our class trip, something that had become a tradition here at Mayville, we gave up a top-grade annual cover so that the extra money could be put into war bonds. We sponsored a magazine campaign for the same avowed purpose. We did our best to become physically fit to prepare us for our future war duties. Yes, we held our annual homecoming dance and class play, but the war had changed its former cheery atmosphere. Now we stand at the threshold of a new life. Gone are the happy years spent at Mayville l-ligh. We have come to realize what it means to face respon- sibility, With the ideal of youth set at some distant point, we shall face unflinchingly the trying years ahead of us. And we shall conquer, and the spirit of our great high school shall rejoice with us. Rowman sciaotmickii ayvilfe G-lml its 1261 and CWAJE x Page 5
