Since that time the school has been constantly expanding in enrollment. In 1923 due to this increase they found that to accomadate the students they would have to build a new school which would be known as Mayville Union Free School. ln 1938 due to centralization it was found necessary to expand this school. This year another expansion of the schoolhasbeencompleted. Because of this constant expansion not only of the school by of nearly everything, we have chosen for this years theme - EXPANSION Q Q, X.. It warms every one who comes near, but before the fuel can warm others, it must catch fire itself, In your road ahead, enthusiasm can play a very important part, It is not enough to be enthusiastic in one's mind, It must be outward, Most of its power comes from its effect on other people. To walk a little faster, talk a little faster, be a little more intense, be a little more vibrant--that is enthusiasm. In such a manner, the minister sells himself to his congre- gation, the doctor to his patients, the teacher to his students, the storekeeper to his customers, In fact, everyone is a salesman. Enthusiasm is a personality trait you always find in leaders. So, young men and women, assume your responsibilities with enthusiasm! Cultivate the habit of instilling enthusiasm into others! Make enthusiasm a habit! fk ' 1 W THE FACULTY ,,uP' HIGH SCHOOL FACULTY FRONT ROW, Left to Right: Ioan Stanislawski, Art, Marilyn Clute, Secretary, Jennie Sommers, Library, Hazel Hitchcock, Study Hall and Sophomores, Geraldine Steward, Homemaking, Dorothy Johnson, Languages, Claire Anderson, Commercial. Offioers for the year were: President, Nancy Hoadleyg Vice-President, Jayne Haselmang Secretary-Treasurer, Nancy Sandburg. SEPTEMBER 1952- Under the direction of Mr. Reffner, we began our Sophomore year. Our oneactivity of the year was theediting of the school paper the Chatterbox, Class leaders were: President, Marty Goodrich: Vice-President, Dave Lincoln, Secretary, Shirley Wadsworthg Treas- urer, Nancy Hoadley. SEPTEMBER 1953- The class had dwindled during the first two years of high school, so we be- gan our Junior year with twenty-eight students in the class. Mr. Vance was the advisor. Officers were: President, Verna Stewardg Vice-President, Marty Goodrich, Secretary, Shirley Wadsworthg Treasurer, Nancy Sandburg. OCTOBER 14, 1953- After much deliberation, we selected our class rings. This was our first school expense and it led to many more. OCTOBER 16, 1953- We encountered our first money-making project which was a dance titled F all Festival, with Harry Gross providing the music for round and square dancing. MARCH 3, 1954- After some delay, our rings arrived. We all agreed that they were the best yet. MARCH 12, 1954- Our second project of the year was another dance, titled Turnabout, where the girls asked the boys. Harry Gross again furnished the music. APRIL 8 Xa 9, 1954- Next came our Junior Play, The Great Ben Allah. It was directed by Mr. Reffner and proved a huge success. JUNE 4, 1954- The Juniors bid farewell to the Seniors by staging a Prom in their honor. The theme was Japanese Fantasy. Art Dedrick and his orchestra capably furnished the music. SEPTEMBER 8, 1954- After a short intermission, we returned to school as Seniors. We were guided by Mr. Steward who was assisted by: President, Verna Stewardg Vice-President, Marty Goodrich: Secretary, Nancy LoPrestig Treasurer, Nancy Sandburg. SEPTEMBER 23-OCI'OBER 12, 1954- Get out and sell! would have been a good slogan for our magazine campaign. For two weeks class members sold magazines whenever they had a chance, We ended up with about five hundred dollars for the treasury. OCTOBER 31, 1954- Next on our list was a Halloween Social. Although hampered somewhat by a raging blizzard, we still had a good crowd. The showing of Walt Disney Cartoons instead of the regular talent show, proved a great success. NOVEMBER 12 84 13, 1954- The Senior play came next. Aunt Tillie Goes To Town was the title. It was directed by Mr. Steward. NOVEMBER 23, 1954- Basketball season began and we sold candy and popcorn at all the home games, which fattened our treasury. NOVEMBER 29, 1954- From this date until Christmas vacation, we sold Christmas cards and wrappings. This also increased our treasury quite a bit. JANUARY 3, 1955- Next on our work calendar was the Yearbook. After a slow start, we were able to make our deadline, only through hours of hard work. Many thanks to our advisor, Mr. Sprague, without whose help we would have never succeeded. APRIL 8, 1955- Twenty-eight students gleefully boarded the train in Olean which would take them to Washington D.C. for five days of sightseeing and fun. Chaperones for the trip were Mr. and Mrs. Steward. MAY 27, 1955- Class Night arrived all too soon. We set the scene in the waiting room of a space- ship airport and proceeded from there. Everyone enjoyed hearing the Will, History, Prophecy and receiving a gift from the Giftorian. JUNE 27, 1955- Graduation finally arrived. Our four years in high school has been filled with many happy memories and we were sad at the thought of departing, but a new world awaited us. , x if as 5 A V S A 3 S In :Q X K v ., Y Q., , . QQ.. , THEME Americans are spending more time daily in recreation than ever before. We live in an area which is nationally known as a fine summer resort. This means a lot of swim- ming, boating, fishing, and the cultural arts offered at nearby Chautauqua institution. What most summer visitors do not realize is the versatility of the region. When the snow covers the ground and the lake freezes over, slides and toboggans nf all sizes and descriptions go flying down the hills while ice skates take the place of rollcr skates. The nevvly-organized Youth Recreation Commission has provided many afternoons and evenings of enjoyable games, dancing, skating, basketball, and outdoor activities. Duc to this ever increasing interest, RECREATION is this year's theme throughout the pages of our yearbook. Dedicated In Memoriam . . . W Q ii: x .Alf ml wgfulr get Richard L. Green To the memory of Richard L. Green, editor-elect, we dedicate this i956 edition of The Pacemaker. Members of the MCS student body ioin The Pacemaker staft in the thought that Dick hos been and will be missed greatly. These are the people who have worked many hours pasting pictures on pages, writing articles, making painstaking sketches, gathering advertisements, typing, and so forth, We hope this Yearbook will bring you all a great deal of enioyment, perhaps a bit of new information about our school, and bring back many fond memories of your years at M. C. S. Our grateful thank you is extended to all those who have aided us in the printing of this Yearbook, THEODORE PETERSEN Supervising Principal THE WORTH OF A TOOL The worth of a tool depends upon the user. This is especially true with human intelligence and human growth. However, any tool can be misused. A ma- ture person does not look upon any instrument as one to solve life's problems. He re-evaluates it, he seeks for improvement. But he makes the best use of what is at hand. Your education is a valuable tool. What you do with it and how you use it depends on you. May you always be dissatisfied with what you have and what you are and thus lead the way to betterment and selt-improvement. Do not misuse the most valuable tool you possess . . . your education! DMINISTRATIO ARE YOU IN CONTROL As you travel along life's highways, I wish you HARRIS J. STEWARD ? Assistant Principal would stop occasionally and ask yourself this ques- tion: Am l in control? There is much over which you have no degree of regulation, but there are many th'ngs that you can govern. You can't control the length of your life, but you can control the extent of its depth and wideness. You can't control the outline of your face, but you can control its expression. You can't control the other felIow's opportunities, but you can grasp your own. You can't regulate your height, but you can control your mind. You can't control the other fellow's faults but you can improve your own. Above all, don't worry about things over which you have no control. Get busy and work on those things that depend on you. ill X viz! v s H V, 1 ik I A x lf- ,-J D .2 as y..An if E k X , .x A .M it ' 4' Ag S S ' 4 ' 'S A- A SENICRS QQSEW SENICR CLASS y ADVISOR Mr. Samuel Tuthill TO THE CLASS GF I956: It is the spring of the year and it is indeed fitting that Commencement comes in this season, for in a very real sense you are in the spring of your lives. You stand now at the threshold of your careers and before you lie success and failure in varying degrees. Do not expect life to be composed entirely of either of these experiences, but rather learn the lesson each has to offer. Make each adventure of life a rule for iudgment and a guide to future action. You have worked hard here at Mayville Central School and your contributions to school life have been considerable. I am confident that the communities in which you choose to live will also profit from your presence and activity. It is with a humble sense of pride that I say I was happy to be, even in a small way, a part of your Senior year. You may be iustly proud of your record as the Class of I956. They suffered from a short- age of recruits who managed to win only one Q out of six games. S -ia--1-Q BASEBALL L Last year the team had a very success- ful season by finishing in second place. This year we look forward to another suc- cessful season with an experienced infield and outfield to help us along to victory. VOLLEYBALL This season our team went to the sec- tionals at Southwestern Central School and placed fourth by winning two games and losing four. Although no letter is offered in volleyball, many of the boys go out for it and enioy the game. C Lg wnesnmo The wrestling team under the guidance ,N of Mr. Yauchzy was the most successful X L mqior sport in M. C. S., placing third in the X county against much larger schools. They had three men win class championships in ,s this area from their team. l 1 1 0 A -f-- I 1V Nm,- IC Na lp c Q1 fl fx I BASKETBALL The 1955-56 season proved unsuccessful as far as games won and lost. We won our only game on Friday the thirteenth, which proved to be a lucky day for the players. We played Panama and beat them on our own court. Because of the good sportsman- ship shown by the players and students throughout the season, we were presented a trophy of which we should all be proud. 3. BOWLING Bowling in M. C. 'Nl MCS SE ICR BA The Mayvillc Central School Senior Band, composed of forty-three members from the Junior and Senior High School, had a busy schedule prior to and during the 1955-1956 school year. Last summer they participated in the annual Fourth of July celebration and subsequently, after a series of weekly rehearsals presented a concert on the Court House lawn in August. The beginning of the school term found them preparing for the various school and community functions in wh ch they participate during the year. The band plays yearly for such functions as the Senior and Junior plays, American Legion Speaking Contest, the PTA Christmas Program, and Gradu- ation, In addition to these functions, four public concerts were presented in the MCS Auditorium. At the February concert the Public had its first opportunity to view the Band members in their long- awaited new uniforms. As another part of their program for the year the Band played several assem- bly programs both in our own school and in others around the area. Thirteen members of the Band participated in the New York State Music Association Sectional All-State Program held at Cassadaga in November, this being a select group of the better school musicians in the area. The group climaxed the yearls activities by participating in the New York State School Music Association Competition Festival at Fredonia and the Chautauqua County Music Festival held yearly in the Chautauqua Amphitheater, This year's Band officers were: President, Patricia Mattesong secretary, Mary Lou Findleyg treas- urer, Marjorie Pitroffg uniform custodians, Gayle Dudley and Sharon Limbaugh.
