The Gold and VVhite won six of its eight contests. Against Central Kentucky Conference opposition, Coach .lones's boys won four con- tests and lost only one, ranking fourth in the standing of the league. The success of the Nlaysville gridders was due mainly to the rapid development of the line. Lee, Rasp, Sweet, Cullen, VValker, and Nlitchell formed a strong for- ward wall. In the backfield Fishter developed fine form. Lee, Fishter, and Cullen were ranked among the outstanding players in the Con- ference. Captain Pop Rees was mentioned candidate for the Lexington Leader trophy, an award based on leadership, sportsmanship, and playing ability. Probably the most outstanding victories of the season were the NI. NI. I. and Lawrenceburg games. On the eve of the BI. BI. l. game, the Bulldogs were given genuine, rousing support by everyone at a pep rally when hi. KI. I. was carried in a hearse and burned in effigy, no doubt the largest and most spirited pep rally ever staged by the Nlaysville student body. This fine spirit and action predominated the team and student body for the entire season. THE SQUAD 27 A ii . Thomas . - Au.: A THE SQUAD BASKETBALL In spite of a serious injury and other handi- caps at the beginning of the season, the Mays- ville High School basketball squad got off to a flying start with four consecutive victories. The Bulldog Captain, Pop Rees, unfortunately broke his ankle at the Manchester game early in the seasong consequently our team was consider- ably handicapped, missing his fast floor-work and ability under the basket. However, the other players-Fishter, Lee, Pawsat, Kennan, and VValker, assisted by Cullen and Brodt- continued to put forth their efforts to make a name for themselves and our school. Maysville's first defeat was met at the hands of the great Ft. Thomas team. Score, I9 to 183 however, the outstanding were all characterized by time periods in which the losses of the season heart-breaking over- opponents--Danville, Ft. Thomas, Paris and Georgetown-barely edged out a victory of one, two, or three points. CHEER LEADERS Below are the pictures, left to right, of john Clarke, Waller Boyd, and Houston Curtis, cheer leaders elected by the three Senior High classes, which they represent. These cheer leaders have made a name for themselves by their cheer leading at all our athletic contests, whether lvlidget games, intramural basketball tilts, tournaments, or football games, although the results obtained during the regular basketball season are the most praiseworthy. Time and again the student body has responded to their infectious enthusiasm, on various occasions, spurred on by spirited backing from the cheering section, the football and basketball teams have rallied when defeat was imminent to nose out a victory. At the end of the term the cheer leader who has put the most spirit into his cheer leading, in the opinion of the judges fthe student bodyj, will be given a letter with a rnegaphone on it, showing for what the letter was won. 32 ,x N X X N -.-...ll ADVOCATE STAFF lsn't this a homely looking menagerie?-Our best Bulldog supporters-what! -It's Fannie getting a big rush-nope, just posing as junior reporters. - Miss Patterson and Coach jones are the faculty advisers-Hut!! Phone 477 Maysville, Ky CLASS PROPHECY 1530 ILVER-SHEATHED and young, yet old as the ages--Fate. She stands, her face now light- ing up with smiles, now hardening in disillusion, and from a long-stemmed pipe within her hand merry bubbles pull loose and float into the air-there to hang, then to disappear. The soap of varied colors that she is using was stacked methodically, too methodically, at her side. I watched, fascinated, as she picks a pink bar and from it blows a bubble-so large, so delicately colored that I gasped in delight. It hung in the air, and in its pink depths I saw and recognized Hazel Stewart. She was at a desk busily writing, and since the desk was large and imposing, I realized she was of importance, probably an editor. just as she looked up and I waved to her, the bubble burst, and Fate nodded approval. A lavender bar she takes now, and the bubble is small but still lovely. Who is that terribly skinny creature in its depths, surely not-Garnet Chamberlain? Poor thing, she's teaching a room full of children. I bet they've worried her skinny. The bubble burst. I looked at Fate and found her amusedly smiling at my astonishment. And then she picks a bar of cool green, and from this bubble grew a dark-haired girl, slim, regal, lovely yet cold. She had a warm heart, I remember, but no one touched it. She's the wife of a wealthy banker-Margaret January. That bubble lingered as if gently pleading with Fate, but only a hardening of the mouth betrayed that silver-sheathed creature. Fate takes a grey bar now and from it blows a bubble of such an indistinct color-a greyish thing. The person in it was blurred, and only with great difl-iculty did I recognize my old pal, Norman I Lee. Fate frowned and looked to see if her pipe was working Cthat bubble wasn't behaving rightj, and when she saw that it was, she laughed and saluted the blurred figure. Even Fate couldn't manage Norman. 'tHe hasn't changed a bit, I remarked maliciously as the bubble burst. And then a golden bubble floated from her pipe, and I imagined I heard the faint chime of wedding bells distantly echoing. I watched in undisguised delight. But I didn't see a church, only a boy and girl speeding down the road, an old cowbell tied to the back end of the car fthe wedding bells I heardl. Looking through the back window of the car, I recognized George Hunsicker and the bride beside him, Gladys Roberts, and over beside Gladys I saw Ben Farmer, looking with adoration at Ruth Clark. I shouted, t'Congratulations! and that sudden commotion burst the bubble. Who could ever grow weary of blowing such beautiful bubbles, but Fate seems so. She taps her pipe impatiently, snatches a bar of crimson soap, and with a mighty puff blows another bubble. Magnif'icent! I cried, and she throws a bar of soap at me. CHowever, she's no good ex- cept for blowing bubbles, so she didn't hit me.J Olivette Austin, attired in a black dress with a silver sash, held her haughty head against that crimson bubble-the latest siren-all men are at her feet, she's adored, hated, but above all, she is loved. A crowd of men surround her. Hot- cha-cha, who do I see in that crowd? Harry Wise, dumbly worshipping, Scotty Boyd, tearing his artistic hair in intense agony the says she's driving him insanej, but the one who seems to be the favorite suitor is Pop Rees, and then into the bubble walked another figure, Mary Martha Purdon, and they turned at once to her fresh loveliness. Scotty ceased tearing his hair, and peace reigned. The bubble burst. And now an orange bubble. What is that? Oh, a baby! and Juanita Zweigart bustling around it. Oh, yes, I remember. She always said she wanted to be a child doctor. She's getting her wish now, for that baby looks like George Fishter. In walks hubby. Oh, George, I heard her say, it's got the colic, and the bubble burst. Fate blew a bubble, a rainbow bubble, with all the colors at her command, and I saw an ofiice, large, expensively furnished. A desk was at one end of it, at which sat a skinny man, gallantly puffing on a great big cigar. Jim Cullen! I gasped. Two efficient, poised secretaries awaited his crders-Margaret Wilson and Madeline Young. 'tMorning edition, Mr. Cullen, said Margaret, and the paper was handed to him. Even as he took hold of it I could see it growing until it blotted out the figures there. I saw in those flashing, black headlines: Helen Morris sues Hermie Pawsat for Breach of Promise. And in slightly lighter headlines: George Hutchison, Captain of N. Y, Police Force is Famous Solver of the Kidnapping of Sweet Molly Day. The culprit was Horace Sweet. He'll spend ten years in the pen, but Molly will be patiently waiting for him when he comes out. You see he kidnapped her because he loved her. I avidly searched for more and I found this: New book, acclaimed by critics, written by Opal Greenhow and Clara Lee Daniels, talented young misses. The title, 'If You Can't Behave, Be Careful,' with illustrations. The pages of the paper mechanically turned, and I saw the radio program. Outstanding events of the air: Barker, Carrigan, Harrison, and Chadwick, the Monkey-House Quartet, harmonizes nightly over station SOS. The pages turn to the ads. Miss Mildred Hutchison, proprietress of the Cat-Gut Restaurant, offers to her public Annalee Hughes, who will give free Latin lessons while you eat. And then Fate takes an indiscriminate handful of bars, rams them into the bowl, chuckling. A gala affair, thought I, this will be. But a plaid bubble, too stripped with colors to allow clearness at first, appeared. Then hazily drifted David Bloom into the foreground. A checkered career his: Two wives, both Kings, Velma and Heleng both queens, first Velma, then Helen. David begins to mutter, and the bubble falls-a few drops of colored water. Fate blows again, but this time without soap. A pure dream of crystal emerged, scintillating, quivering as it caught the light and reflected its own beauty. Ann Rozan, garbed in silver, smiled in her own gracious way to a dark stranger. He took a step, Fate nods approval. The bubble floated from the pipe up into the rarefied air of the sky. The next bubble, blue in color, contained the figure of Marvin, sitting at a school desk, dreaming. The bit of blue would have remained on the pipe, for no move made Marvin, but Fate crushed the fragile bit in her hand. Fate took a white bar now, and from its pure whiteness I saw the bubble-a black figure against the white, a man of the world, suave, experienced, Bill Pollock. He looked a little cynical. I remembered his shy, bashful days and wonderedg and Fate, that unmerciful goddess, laughed at what she had done, laughed at the irony of black against white, and laughing, forgot her pipe-let it fall from her hands. It lies shattered in my dreams. By Kxrrnz GLAscocK. PORTER fa SON FAREWELL GLADYS ROBERTS ini A pause for meditation, A sigh of sincere regret, A tear, unheeded, trickles down our cheek That time, Looked for, longed for, yet dreaded, Has arrived. Joyful? Yes. Success has been attained. Sorrowful? A feeling, akin to pain, too deep, too Immortal, envelops us. Oh, that it weren't so. But it is so. The crossroads are here. From the main highway Where sailing has been easy To crossroads. From friends, who have been considerate, Who have comforted and encouraged To strangers. What has been We know. Happenings that are seared into Our memory. Seated so deep That even death Cannot erase the scars. But what will be? We know not. We hope and pray That the Almighty will be lenient With us, Youthful travelers on a new highway. 1-ff. ' '.
