Their sincere interest in the Nlaysville Public School system and the students enrolled therein has clearly revealed itself in the willingness with which they have devoted time and untiring effort without compensation to its management. It is with a profound sense of gratitude that this fact is acknowledged by us. VVe hold our etlicient Board of Education in our highest respect and esteem and sincerely hope that this effort on our part may show to some extent our appreciation for their services. 0 PAGE 8 'L ' 'hi' 1212, V 'ff-f? To any blonde or brown-headed Sophomore dame! 0 PAGE 32 .131 Wa .ku , m , Vw Class History By JEAN Wsls ig- B In the year nineteen hundred and twenty-nine Nearly sixty green F reshies entered this school, Ushered to their rooms, by luck they did fnd Miss Collins was to have them under her rule. They elected their oficers-feeling quite big, And chose as their colors-rose and white. Into English and such they decided to dig, To prove that, though small, they were full of might. They startled the students and teachers a bit By making great sums of pennies and green-backs, The great spark of their ambition was lit When they made and sold gold and white dollies by packs. As sophomores their number was slightly decreased But they stuck to their motto-forward ever, backward never. Their greenness slowly but surely decreased, And they planned more and more for the happy hours together. Bright lights, pretty faces, pale blues, and chiffons Laughing voices, happy hearts, gay tunes, and dancing, Everyone merry, ravishing the whirl of batons Feasting, loving the moments entrancing. - t , Such was their junior-Senior dinner and dance, . And after this excitement it was so hard To settle down and learn Math and old stories of France,: Those who made A's,' that month should have had an award. They published a paper every week, And tried hard to make it a good one, The staff members would frantically seek For news articles, features, and fun. And now they are Seniors-their goal is attained, Their last days together are drawing nighg But the happiness of previous years is sustained, Although the thoughts of departure bring a sigh. 1 v . Since graduation, he has coached one year in the Morton Junior H' h S ' ' ig chool of Lexington and three years in the Kavanaugh Preparatory School of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. Under his splendid leadership, this latter team won the Cl s A S COACH J-ONES a s tate Championship at Kavanaugh, after which it attended the National Tournament at Chicago and there overwhelmingly defeated the Champions of New York. VVith him as their coach, the Nlaysville High Bulldogs have also emerged victorious from countless athletic matches, both on the gridiron and the basketball Hoor. ASSISTANT COACH GRAHAM During the football season of 1932, Coach Jones has had as his able assistant, Professor Oscar Graham, whose willing coop- eration has proved an invaluable aid to both team and instructor. With the excellent instruction of Coach Jones and Professor Graham, the Bulldogs have scored a series of brilliant victories I which, if history repeats itself both in regard to coaching and re- , sults, will be carried through to the end of the 1933 season. I hurriedly picked up my pad and walked in through the door marked Private, Gertrude Collins, Dean of VVellesly College. I had just been promoted to the position of private secretary to the Dean and was anxious to make a good showing. Entering the room, I noticed a varied collection of papers on Miss Collins' desk. Hand- ing them to me she said, Here, Elizabeth, I thought these might interest you. They proved to be a paper from home and a couple of letters. I turned my attention first to the letters. One was post-marked Cincinnati, Ohio. It read: . JEWISH HOSPITAL Cincinnati, O. November 16, 1943. Dear Illisr Collins .- There has been an incident here at the hospital that has made me think of you and of my high school days, so I'm writing you because I thought you would like to hear of it. Yesterday, some emergency cases were brought in from a wreck caused when a privately owned gyroplane collided with an air bus. Delbert Outten, President of the Ezy-Toze Shoe Corporation, and Philip Har- gett, his lawyer, were the occupants of the gyroplane. Neither were seriously in- jured. , Virginia Peggs, a stenographer in the Mabley-Carewe building, and Dolores King, head floorwalker in a Woolworth's Five and Ten, received minor injuries and were immediately released after treatment. I think it was rather a coincidence that they should all be of the Senior Class of '33, donlt you? Respectfully yours, ELMYRA PAWSAT, Supl. of Nurrex. I then picked up the paper and, noticing several items marked off in brackets, I read them. On the first page was the wedding announcement of Miss Helen Holt to Mr. Mel- vin Manley, manager of the Second Street Kroger Store. I discovered later that Ann had eloped with a traveling salesman and Melvin had married in an effort to forget. The headlines glared: Daring Robbery, Thief Unknown. Detective Louis Daven- port at Work on the Mystery. The Bank of Maysville was held up yesterday and relieved of S20,000. Edward Martin, President, was shot through the right arm and narrowly escaped losing his life. Turning to the society column, I found quite a few brackets. The first was a bridge party given by Mr. and Mrs. Walter Roschi in honor of Miss Georgia Turnipseed, better known as Interference, the wise-cracking fool of the Radio Hour over WLW. After a delightful evening of bridge, a delicious lunch was served by Mrs. Roschi, assisted by her mother, Mrs. William Weis. Mrs. George Fishter, formerly Miss Elizabeth Loyd, received the prize for high score while Mrs. Horace Cochran, Jr., formely Miss Bessie Hall, re- ceived consolation. Further down I read: 'fLittle Miss Bissette Entertains Friends at Birthday Party. Miss Louise Bissette, charming little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gordon Bissette, enter- tained a number of little friends yesterday in honor of her third birthday. Mrs. Bissette will be remembered as Miss Louise Wright, popular student of M. H. S. Among the personals were: Miss Naomi Breeze, Miss Elizabeth Berry, and Miss Virginia Cooper, popular teachers in M. H. S., attended K. E. A. last week. All of them reported a marvelous time. 'Pete' Nicholas, noted Chicago electrician, is now visiting friends in Maysville. Miss Imogene and Mr. Robert Staker left Saturday for California, where they will take over a ranch left to them jointly by some distant relative. In the upper corner was a picture of a cow and a man. Since the man looked familiar, I read beneath it: Prize Winning Steer and Its Owner, William Soisterf' In the ad columns were advertisements of the A. 8: P. store, at the bottom of which was: A, C. Ricketts, Manager. This caused me to look at the rest of the ads, where I dis- covered several old schoolmates. VVilliam Yarber was manager of the East End Kroger Store and Dudley Dezonia of the one on Market Street. The Russell Theatre ad read: Former Maysville People Starred in Glorified Film 'Glorious Flames! Maxine Poynter and Helen Clift-Maysville's Gifts to Hollywood- will be at the Russell Sunday and Monday in 'Glorious Flames'-America's Greatest Pic- ture. Eugene Finch is the male interest in this picture. It is rumored that he is taking the place of Clark Gable, who fell from fame rapidly after 'Gene's remarkable intro- duction. There was a full page ad announcing the opening of a new store. It was located where George H. Frank's had been, and the line of goods carried was the same. The new store was to go by the name of Sunier, johnson, Rose and Company. Further investiga- tion brought to light the fact that the new owners were none other than Stanley Sunier, Vincent johnson, and Edward Rose. In the Hayswood Hospital notes was an item of interest also. It read: A baby boy was born last night to Mr. and Mrs. James McClanahan. Mrs. McClanahan was Miss Helen Irwin before her marriage. The only comic strip in the paper was entitled Popeye, Jr. and the cartoonist proved to be Charles Atkinson. This gave me an idea. I turned to the continued story. Sure enough, there it was- Romance of the Wilderness, by Herschel Owens. Miss Shea al- ways said he was original. I had read too much. I put down the paper and picked up the other letter. It was postmarked Maysvilleg I opened it eagerly. Dear Miss Collins: I've just had a promotion and I just had to tell you about my good luck. I'm selling tickets now instead of ushering. Isn't that grand? Well, I might just as well tell you a little gossip while I'm at it. You remem- ber Beulah Carpenter, who graduated in our class? She is managing Elite's now, and Helen Kratzer and Dolly Truesdale are working in there. They have quite a promising business and why shouldn't they? John Goodwin has been hanging around Vance's for the past five years. He has the reputation of making all these little high school girls' hearts Hutter. But listen to this-Ralph Lyons has a dancing school up over Mike Brown's. He does the teaching himself. Shorty Tolle resigned the other day, and guess who took his place--Robert Bunton. I've saved the best till last. Here it is-last week, Henrietta Moore eloped with Woodie Fowler. Like the Northwest Mounted, she finally got her man, and what a man! Of course I'm not jealous, I wish them loads of happiness. Lovingly, Mtunuzo MCCLANAHAN. I lay the papers down on the desk with this comment, I'm going to like this job! We wonder how, long years ago, when his dad went a-huntin', f He found a rabbit big enough to skin for Robert Bunton! of 5, N His eyes are like two saucers, his ears resemble fans, And from his looks we know that he attacks food with both hands. Such was the Senior Specimen, who graced our room one day, And now parks in the corner where he won't be in the way. The story I must tell you is a tale both sad and long, Of how he started out one wayg then found out he was wrong, For each September morning saw Robert's vacant chairg Why should he be bothered? They'd make him comb his hair! Then one day he was informed that he'd sure been a fool. The little bird that told him this was working at the school. His job was helping Mr. Eyer while taking pictures there, And Robert might be minus his if he did not beware! Well, Robert nearly killed himself to get to school next day, And did succeed in killing things that happened in his way. But, lo! When he arrived at school, Miss Collins said, Too late! And added, If you weren't so slow, it might have changed your fate. So that is why your piercing eye his mop has not discerned Among the chosen forty-four, well, he has learned That if you want your picture in, you've got to be on time, Or else they'll leave you out and substitute for you a rhyme! CARRIGAN 'mf'al yl n - i kr, no mdxfhrnena, ,, - :. 5 ' T 5 nf' M - f iiggags 4, O L, Envoi fiflpology to Kiplingj When youth's rosy dreams have vanished, And each student is wrinkled and gray, When high school hours are finished And time goes on-day by day, How glorious shall be the memories Of the good times in class and in study hall, Even the stern looks of the teachers Will not be remembered at all. Pictures will pass before our minds Like the open pages of a book, Weill see ourselves as short-legged tots, Entering M. H. S. with such a green look. Then as snooty,' Sophomores we come, Feeling so important and big Watching, only, for the chance To give the new Freshies a dirty dig! As funiors we quite take the placef, Publishing an Advocate and such, Entertaining the Seniors with a dance, Wishing to be as they-alas, too much. For as we become uppermost classmen We yearn to be mere Freshmen again, Sadly grasping each moment to us Knowing that we near the end. And now the pages close swiftly, We smile as we shut the boolq. Yet, there are tears ready to be shed With the slightest word or look. When our memories are left to us only, And life thrills us no more How good it is to recall the days When each moment brought joy by the score.
