'ww Www' The experience of entering our Freshman year in MayodanHigh School seems some- what queer to us now, but glan cing back over those days, we recall experiences that were amusing, peculiar, and sometimes tragic. Those e x p e r i e n c e s linked together form the history of the class of 1959. Like all Freshmen, we were green -not just plain green, but a brilliant, glaring green. However, by avoiding the Seniors whenever possible, we managed to escape the fate that we had anticipated. Under the leadership of Mr. Atkinson and Mr. Stultz as our homeroom teachers, we finally pulled through that year, and looking on Fresh- man report cards for the last time, we considered ourselves Sophomores. As Sophomores we were more accustomed to the high sch ool schedule, but we yet did not know what it was all about, and left this grade wondering if we actually knew more than we did on e nte ring. We divided our time between trying to grasp English literature and just plain wondering what the teachers were talking about. Most of us were now participating in high school activities, and in the spring of that year, we ordered our class rings. T In the fall of 1957 we returne d to school to find that we were Juniors, not that it meant so much to us, but we had heard that we were supposed to accomplish something. This year may be truly called the awakening because we began to show signs of life. We awoke to the fact that we still had two years of high s ch ool, and that there were things to do-like studying. We shook off the ch ains of bashfulness and lack of confi- dence that had retarded us as Freshmen and Soph omore s, and began to enter other activities. One of the most glorious events of our I unior year was receiving our long- awaited class rings. We were co-sponsors with the P. T. A. in the annual I-I allow e e n Carnival held in the old gymnasituri. This event turned out to be a big success, through the help of Mrs. Irma Crews, our homeroom teacher. The grand finale of this year was our Junior-SeniorBanquet, which was held at the Robert E. Lee Hotel in Winston-Salem. An all-too-short three-month's v ac a tion, and we were back-Seniors! Being the oldest in the school, we naturally had to asstune roles of le ade rsh i p. As Seniors we realized that there was no hesitating and no W onde ring, we had to buckle down and make this year count. This required more study-a word some of us lmew little about. Until this year we didn't know whether the Senior privileges were a joke or a re ality, but after our much-enjoyed trip to the State Fair in Raleigh, we considered at least one privilege real. Our Senior year was comprised of study, extra activities, compiling the annual funder the faithful guidance of Miss Dosierj, the junior-Senior Banquet, and the memorable occasion of graduation. just four years-v aluable years! Years full of fun, work, and experiences! Soon some of us will enter again those awful portals of learning, not in awe or fear, but in the realization that we have completed part of our task and are setting our course for those to come. BRENDA GANN Historian ful JZMJ7 State of North Carolina County of Rockingham City of Mayodan We, the members of the Senior C la ss of Mayodan High School, on this thirty-first day of May, in the year nineteen hundred and fifty-nine, having completed our journey through the land of Knowledge, and having reached our long-awaited goal of graduation, find that we have acctmiulated a vast store of earthly treasures, and, in all respect to our heirs and friends, do declare this to be our last will and testament. NANCY CASE Testatrix Witnesses: President: Rodney Yotmg Advisor: Miss Winifred Dosier Principal: Mr. J. C. Atkinson P As I sit in my office, before opening hour on this beautiful May day of 1969, I read an invitation to the graduation of a young friend, and I recall the day I graduated from Mayodan High School ten years ago. During the past ten years, my classmates have been quite successful. Why, NANCY CASE has really worked her way up since high school days. She was such a good reporter on the high school news that she is now Editor-in-Chief of the Madison Messenger. ' ROGER WRAY is Art Director for McCall's Magazine. Also, he has a very interesting hobby, collecting paper cup dispensers. WAYNE TI-IACKER, now co-owner of Mills-Thacker Super Market, has an excellent bookkeeper, HAROLD DOSS, Having given up nursing at Cone Memorial Hospital, CAROLYN I-IOLT is now devoting all her time to being a housewife and mother. Little Bert is quite a handful. Vlfho would have ever thought that GAIL I-IURD and her husband, Leon, would run a florist shop! I must admit, they have some of the most beautiful flowers in town, since Gail took a special course in flower arranging. DUKE BAUGI-IN, having inherited his grandfather's grocery st ore, now rides around in his Cadillac while his manager, GARY FOX, runs the store. GLORIA WOODS, PRISCILLA GROGAN, and LINDA VADEN are dazzling television audiences all over the world, singing under the name, The Royalets. TOMMY WILLIAMS is a sports newscaster for the CBS-TV Network in New York. His favorite cameraman is GILBERT JOHNSON. FOYE JOHNSON, although a housewife, also has a fine career as a beautician. Her husband is a bus driver, having plenty of experience from high school days at Madison. JUDY MIDDLETON and EVON GOINS are professional b as ke tb all players. Evon is sending her husband, Buster, through college. JAVON PERDUE is a technical engineer at Radio Station WMYN, where his wife is a disc jockey. JOAN GRAVLEY is the new chemistry teacher at West Rockingham ConsolidatedHigh p 0FJ 'f School. This is a surprising choice, since she was such a whiz in Spanish, not in chemistry. HAROLD PORTIS has gone into partnership with Tom Tuttle. Tuttle-Portis Chevrolet has been getting quite a bit of business from the Road Devils, as TYRONE BASS is a salesman there. LEA BLACK, BETTY CARTER, and PAULA RICHARDSON had atriple wedding three years ago, and the bridegrooms were those Joyce brothers. Polly is the proud mother of twins. Stonevi1le's population is increasing rapidly, it seems. MILTON VLA is now manager ofthe Mayo Theatre. His chiefushers are KEN FARMER and DARRYL GRAY. After finally passing his civil service examination, RODNEY YOUNG is a messenger boy for the Post Office in Mayodan. As the brains ofour class, BRENDA GANNhas reachedher goal. She is the first woman President of the United States. NORMA SMITH is a model for Seventeen, after having won the title, Miss North Carolina. RALPH VADEN, JOHNNY ROBERTSON, and WILLLALM WE S T ON are acrobats with the Big Top Circus. They are now appearing in Philadelphia. PATTI CARDWELL is a waitress at Craig's Diner. Fuzzy retired. JACK CARDWELL saddled up graduation night and has been a rootin'-tootin ' cow- boy ever since. His famous sidekick is ROBERT CHANEY. ANN WILLIAMS has become a dress de signe r in New York. You sadly leave the portals, Where there's been born a dream Which will ever keep you pressing on To follow, follow the gleam. And the paths of life is before you, Luring and bidding you on. And you must go to take your place In the future that you have won. Farewell to joys of high school days, From these you now depart. Although you go, the memories will live Forever in your heart.
