From our teachers came lessons of patience, From our classmates, lessons of friendship. From all these came knowledge, which old man time from us cannot sever. From these came cherished memories that will last forever. From these things together came twelve happy years. We, the class of '56, say Thank You ---Frances Joyce it . We got off to agood start under the leadership of our teachers, Mrs. Rogers and Mrs. Turner. Our next two years passed quickly and we were soon looking forward to having our classes upstairs. This would be a new and great experience for us because it would be our first year an the second floor with the older pupils. Time flew swiftly by, and before long we found ourselves in the eighth grade, the threshold of high school, andnone of our happiest and most adventurous years of elementary school. We had as our teachers Mrs. lrma Crews and Mrs. Maude Lemons. We really thought we were a bid deal that year because we were on the high school schedule and had a few of the priviledges enioyed by the high school students. We even had the oppor- tunity of going to Raleigh to see some of the historical places and interesting exhibits in our state capital. That spring we graduated from grammer school with a class of fifty-eight pupils. ln the fall of l952 the doors of M.H.S. opened and welcomed us as freshmen. High school was something new and different to us, and we were eager to take part in all its activities and all it had to offer. The biggest day of our sophomore year was when we selected and ordered our class rings. We looked forward to receiving them, until the beginning of the Junior year, when we finally did have our long-awaited-for em- blems of high school. Much planning and working together was required when we were Juniors, for then we sponsored a very successful Halloween Carnival in cooperation with the P.T.A. Another important event of that year was the Junior Senior Banquet, given at the Plantation Supper Club, on April l5. This was a tremendous success, and we were even complimented by the remark that it was the best Junior-Senior yet given at Mayodan High School. All this was due to the fine cooperation of the class and our advisers, Miss Gladys Joyce and Mrs. Ann Bilger. This fall of 1955 we entered Mayodan High School for the last time as students, with the destination of being the largest senior class in the history of the school . As seniors we were priviledged to attend the State Fair in Raleigh. We chartered a bus and were chaperoned by Miss Gladys Moore, commercial teacher, and Mr. Duncan, principal. Our last year in Mayodan High School has been the most important and happiest to us. With the fine advice and guidance of our homeroom teachers, Mrs. Irma Crews and Miss Winifred Dosier, we have published this year's ANCHOR. We are looking forward to graduating in May, with great hopes for the future. DIANNE BARROW Historian clot cwill State of North Carolina County of Rockingham We, the Class of '56 of Mayodan High School, being unsure of our soundness of mind on this thirty-first day of May, do declare this to be our last will and testament, hereby making not valid all other warrents written or otherwise done by any of us before this historic day. Q, Cijlaoo ?rophecy PASTIME: Looking through the May 25th 1976 edition of the Mayodan-Madison Mes- senger. On the front page l find the names of two familiar persons on the staff. Mike Dalton, who always stood by our dear old class and tried to sneak in the news of M. H. S. , is now Editor-in-Chief. Irene Smart, social editor, keeps us informed concerning the latest happenings around the social circles. On the front page l see several interesting articles. The first is a feature on our local heroine, Maxine George, who joined the Waves, and sank one of Russia's largest sub-marines while singing You Let Me Go, Lover. Here is a most intriguing article written by Tyrone Baker, the noted scientist, who discovered a new miracle drug that makes talI men shorter. He tells how he took fifteen inches from Ron Joyce's height. Now maybe some of us earth men can get a good look at Ron. Here is another feature.f lt is a coverage of Ravernell Wray's opening at the Coconut Grove in California. She became an over-night success with her hit song, Why Did You Leave Me? She has with her a close companion, Christine Vernon. l see another article saying that the local branch of the, l D0n't Like Work Club is striking again, President Baldy James and Vice-President Sam Atkins are head of the strike. On the editorial pagel find two articles of interest. They are about Buster Atkins and his Bus Driver's Training School. ltsays thathis prize pupils are Dick Washburn and Duval Vernon. Another is about June Bryant and Sonja Watson, currently on a speaking tour. Their favorite subject is How to Rule the Men and Get by with it. They are real pros at this subject. ln the local section l see that three of our teachers, Anita MCGhlI'1, JOGH Smith and Alice Shelton are taking off for a Carribean Cruise. Jeanette Coleman, President of Mac's, was honored by a visit by Rosie Coleman the first woman President. Dianne Barrow is now teaching home economics to the boys at State College. Wayne Lee is one of her pupils. Barbara Hatcher is still running Effie's . She was greatly surprised when Effie passed away and left the house to her. This has, no doubt, saved Cecil some money. Betty Haley has joined Billy Haley in making more and more of the Rock and Roll records. Ray Lawson, Carlton, Phil, Juney Gray, and Eldee Martin have finallygraduated from private to higher ranks. Carlton, Phil, Juney are now genera ls while Ray and Eldee are real tough sergeants. They are still plugging away at their careers in the Marines. I elaoo Qprophecy Molly Wall and her husband, who lead a very busy life going from country to country, are coming home for a visit. He has made a career of the Army and they are presently staying in Siam. Mrs. Curlee Joyce, the former Denica Wheeler, is now chief bottle-washer both at home and West End Cafe. She's working his way through college. No! lt's not Curlee, it's Curlee, Jr. now. The news account says that they havefinally consented to letting her cook some too. This was her secret ambition. Having read the last of the locals, I turned the page and come to the Society News. Here l see that the Book Club of Mayodan is sponsoring a party for Jean Puc- kett, who has just completed her latest novel, entitled, How to Make Marriage a Success. On the sport page, l find that Buddy Martin has finallytaken Stan Musial's place with the Cardinals, after trying so long. Maynard Tuggle has started his own basketball team, composed of Marines. They call themselves the Globetrotter Juniors. They beat the original Globetrotters this year. ln a crime reportl see that Fred Ledbetter has been arrested on charges of swind- ling. Chief of Police, Jimmy Berry, made the arrest. Fred had been posing as the tall man in a circus. He was discovered to be only 5'5 . ll finally found out his secret. He wore elevated shoes.J There is an interesting item in the Pine Hall News. Frankie Joyce is teaching a class in How to Pick Your Mate and Hold Him for her! there. Kennis Grogan en- rolled last Monday. He is tried of the bachelor life he is leading as principal of M. H. S. l looked on through The Messenger and came tothe Sandy Ridge news. Geraldine is now a mechanicfbelieve it or notjat Ziglar's Servicenter. Jeronia is Marriage Counseler at S.R.H.S. She is an experienced hand, with many happy years of marriage behind her. At this point in my reading, l came to the advertisements. l always enioylooking at this section but this time l had a special reason. The first ad l saw was about Frances Joyce's Studebaker Motors, where you get nothing for something. Glenda Alley is Manager, and when these two team up, you know what to expect. Nelda Johnson and Kenneth Hurd have formed their own company and are putting out a new product called John-Hurd's peroxide, which is good for any type of hair. Here is an ad for part-time workers at Baughn's Department Store. l looked at it twice--l thought it was Reuben Baughn's Store. Well, it wasn't, it was Bettys'. Finally, l came to the ad, which l was looking for. This was the one which l, Peggy Joyce, placed to find a correspondent for the Sandy Ridge News. Though this has been my hobby for many years, l'm now giving it up. If JP -fi 1o fv.n .sf 'Q flu AV J' if f V2 A ' -' .N if -' K, Kiki 2, WMM?
