We had as our teachers Mrs. Rogers and Mrs. Turner. During this first year our class took a train trip to Stoneville and visi- ted the first grade there. Along with this trip we had lunch in the school cafeteria. This was a new experie :e for us because we didn't have a cafeteria at our school. Our next big year was in the fourth grade, for we were then having classes upstairs. Heretofore, all of our classes had been downstairs. We had always looked up to the pupils who had the privilege of having classes on the second floor. When we finally made the grade, it gave us a feeling of superiority. Time flew swiftly by, and we soon found oursleves in the eighth grade with Mrs. Crews and Mrs. Lemmons. This year was our most exciting in elementary school because we were on schedule with the high school, and at the end of the spring semester we had a commencement exercise just like high school students. By the time we had reached our freshman year, we had lost several of our classmates. Some moved to other towns and others felt that the task of learning was too hard, so they dropped out. ln the spring of our sophomore year we selected and ordered our class rings. This was important to us because we had been looking forward to it since the beginning of our high school days. ln our Junior year we helped the P. T. A. sponsor a very successful Halloween Carnival. We also received our class rings. We had been looking forward to this since the preceding spring. Another important event was giving the Senior Class a banquet. Since this was the first formal banquet for most of us, and also the first time many of us had gone to the Plantation, we were all greatly excited. ln our Senior year receiving our caps and gowns was a new adventure. Everyone was rushing around to find one that fits. We made two important trips. The first was to the State Fair in Raleigh. Here we saw many of the exhibits, enjoyed the rides, and mostly the shows. Our second trip was to Elon College. Here we got a glimpse of life on the campus and also what went on in the classrooms. There is no need to say that the most special day of our Senior year was our last--Graduation. 'X' MASCOTTS OF 1955 SANDRA LYNN KALLAM JOHNNY MILLER We, the Class of '55, ln years behind have tried to strive To do our best, with efforts whole, To reach our long-awaited goal. Sometimes burdened with troubled mind, Always blessed with teachers kind, Sometimes possessed with spirits low, Yet ever shown the way to go. Our high school days are numbered, and soon no more will be, The door of our future is opening, a fuller life to see. We hope, in these glad portals, that when others, near their goal arrive, Will always remember us, the Class of '55. ---by Jan Martin LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT State of North Carolina County of Rockingham We, the class of I955, being almost sound of mind on this third day of June, do declare this to be our last will and testament, hereby making void all other testimonials told or written heretofore by any of us. Willa Von Adams Jack Crews CLASS PROPHECY On the night of June l, 1955, we finally ended our toilsome twelve years of schooling. After the graduation exercises we bade dear old M.H.S. goodbye and departed, to go our own ways. Being tired, l went home to get some rest and sleep and awake with anticipation of the future. So l lay down and closed my eyes and was soon in a supreme state of dormancy. That night, perhaps, my future got ahead of me--about ten years ahead of me, l'd say. l dreamed of standing on the mountain- top above Mayodan. Mists were swirling about my feet, but below, in the valley, a nucleus of tall buildings loomed above the numerous houses and factories that radia- ted out to the very crest of the surrounding mountains. Was this the Mayodan l had known only the day before? lt must be, but l simply had to see it more closely and investigate the renaissance of thc?gEaming municipality. Down the mountainside l ran, and soon found myself striding along the thorough- fare with an interminable number of shops and offices on either side of me. Then l began looking for familiar landmarks and names. The landmarks were few, but im- mediately above my head l noticed a sign that read B.G. Chaney, Certified Public Accountant. Well, he surely used to show a knack for that sort of rot. Across the street l saw a neon marquee bearing the names of two other classmates of mine. No, they weren't in show business, but they were operating the swankiest billiard hall in town, l'll bet. Ralph Bullins and Daniel Vaden were the co-owners, and welcomed me whole-heartedly to a glass of suds. Here l gathered a good bit of gossip. l learned our old friend Ronny Watkins had achieved a glorious career playing pro- football with the Washington Redskins. Roy Bullins also had been playing profession- ally with the New York Knicknockers, but was .now considering retirement and getting married. Someone turned on the television, and then l learned that WFMB now had TV. There was a homemakers' show just going off that featured none other than Peggy Myers and Dawn Cannon. They iust couldn't wait until after graduation for matrimony. But guess who immediately followed them in the wittiest comedy show you ever saw? lt was Jan Martin, who was also founder of the town newspaper. l decided to see what was on the hit parade of l965, and after depositing a coin in the iukebox, there came from the depths of the mr :hine a haunting voice which could only be that of Jack Crews. He was nowa recording artist and operated a res- taurant as a sideline. After that encore l simply had to head for open air, so l con- tinued on down the street past a large 5 8. lOq: store that was owned by Ann Vernon and Styn e Boyer. Beside it l also noticed as familiar name, Clyde Easter Barbell Co. Later l learned he had won the title of Mr. America. Across the street l saw ,Ronny Martin getting out of a car and entering an interior decorating shop. A- bove the elaborately festooned show windows a sign showed he was the proprietor. I contemplated transversing the busy thoroughfare when I was hailed by Duke Griggs. He was evidently quite a successful businessman who still had time to chauf- feur me around. He invited me for a tour of the town, Wheriliu gained knowledge of the rest of our classmates. We passed Carol Martin's model agency recently open- ed, and who was coming out of the door but Thelma Amos? Duke said she was the social columnist for Mayodan's leading newspaper. We came to a familiar intersection, though enclosed by quite modern edificies, had the location of West End. Here J. T. Gibson had a large automobile agency, which reminded me: What ever became of Gordon Crouch and the Gobsmobile? I asked. Duke said he was president of the local gourmet club and was now on the road making lectures in the Gobsmobile III. I told Duke I would like to see the Hallowed Walls of M.H.S. He told me it was quite changed, and to verify his statement, we came into view of an imposing structure that now had an extra block incorporated into its campus. lts athletic plant was absolutely the most. Upon walking over the grounds we met Vinson Perdue, the h ead coac h, of course. We began reminiscing about the days when the mellowed walls imprisoned our restless souls. Vinson told me Carole Shreve now held the posi- tion of school secretary and that Betty Jean Goins was to begin teaching home eco- nomics there next fall . We bade Vinson farewell and resumed the tour. Duke turned on the car radio and tuned in Donny Noel, an eminent news commentator at the local station. He announced that Sylvia Stultz was giving up a career in sports to lead a quiet home- life with husband and children. He also announced that Nelda White had written another prize-winning novel . Duke said she lived in a remote cottage on the moun- tain. I asked Duke who was left that I hadn't seen or heard of. He thought for a mo- ment and then pointed to a neat white house near the edge of town and said that Emma resided there, and back up the street Willa Von lived. He went on to say he thought each had a sizable brood. Then I thought of two more girls who had been good friends, Shelby Carter and Beverly Atwood. He said Shelby had moved to town and was living near Beverly on the other side of town. At that lasked Duke where he lived. Madison , he replied quite to my surprise. He invited me to ride over and see his sumptuous estate, but near the airport those foggy mists began to enshroud the earth again and I awoke from the dream. To those whom my nocturnal prognostications prove favorable, so be it. To those whom I have rendered the slightest offense, I beg their pardons most humbly. Emil MONOGRAM CLUB n A MAYODAN HIGH CHORUS C9 STUDENT COUNCIL Officers: Ronny Watkins, President, Kenneth James, Vice-President, Sylvia Case, Secretary, Frances Joyce, Treasurer. The Student Council has been very important in certain activities of the school. It takes part in and directs the various function such as the assembly program, which is held every Thursday morning in the school auditorium. The program chairman for this is appointed by the Student Council. Conc essions at the ball games are also handled by the Student Council. The annual Homecoming Parade and football game is another work of this organization. In the s pon sor i n g of the Beauty Pageant the Council has a tremendous task, preparing the stage scenery and securing contestants. All this is but a small part of the activities of the Student Council. This group has done more for Mayodan High School than any other student organization.
