We have given to our yearbook this name, because of the little green valley which nestles between two beautiful mountains, completely encircling and beautify- ing our town, along with the river which flows close by to add to our picture. From this beautiful scene, which an artist might envy, one seems to hear an echo emerge from the mountain as it watches over the valley. We have chosen this name, the Echo , with full realization of our geographic surroundings, and with the desire that some day our yearbook will echo our happy high school days, f 'f ' DEDICATIGN It is with deep respect and admiration that we dedicates this Echo of 1952 to LT. HG. D. L. MOORE, now serving in the United States Navy, who, by his unlimited kindness, friendly gaiety, warm and genuine interest in individual students, and human ' ' . W that understanding, won the love of every Mayodan High School student e are sure his unfailing service to Mziyodin High School will always be remembered. ,A ,.fgQ 'S M . cc . It is a great gift God has given, thus, That mem'ry of things gone is still with us. Some day, when we. grown old. these pages turn, How many mem'ries will within us burn! We'll see each face, and hear the gleeful laughter, We'll live again each happy school day chapter. Where'er the road of life may wind, To our dear friends we leave behind We say, Forget-mevnotf' And yet Within our hearts we know you can't forget. For. even as we'll still remember you, We know these pages, will remind you, too. As in these pages, in our hearts include, Classmates and teachers with our love and gratitude. CLASS HISTORY We, the seniors of l95Z, began our twelve years of learning in l9f'lO with a large enrollment under the care of Mrs. julia Turner and Mrs. Virginia Loftis, and passed the next two years under the guidance of other fine teachers. Our year in the fourth grade was one of our most exciting because we felt so much larger iust to be, for the first time, upstairs. The next big year was when we entered the eighth grade and began to follow the high school schedule. That was also the first year all of us were together. because there was only one eighth grade. The salient event of that year was our graduation into high school. Our teacher for that year was Mrs. M. G. Lemons. We then began to think of the highlights of our next four years-the ordering of our class rings, receiving our class rings. junior-Senior Banquet, and wearing our caps and gowns. Our high school career got off to a big start in Miss Gladys joyces room. That fall, the whole high school tool: a trip to Raleigh to hear President Truman speak, and on our return stopped and spent the afternoon at the State Fair. ln the tenth grade came one of our thrilling events, ordering our cl iss rings. After this we could hardly wait for them to come. As juniors we spent our busiest year. Early in the fall, when we received our class rings, we felt thcn that one of our dreams had been fulfilled. Shortly after this we began working on our Halloween Carnival, which was a great success. Then work started on the junior-Senior Banquet, which was held at the Hotel Robert E. Lee in XX!inston-Salem. The success of these tasks were due to our fine class officers and to our homeroom teacher, Mr. Leon Moore. Wfhen Mr. Moore had to leave during the year to enter the Navy, it left a big vacancy in our school. Mr. Roscoe Billings took his position for the remainder of the year. This last year for us in Mayodan High School, with our advisor, Miss Dosier, has had as big events-publishing of the year book, and anticipation of wearing our caps and gowns and receiving our diplomas. LAST VVILL AND TESTAMENT We, the graduating class of nineteen fifty-two, who through our twelve years of struggles to achieve our desired goal, have acquired much knowledge, many friends, too many idiosyncracies, hetrrogeneous objects, and inane thought, do solemnly declare this writing to be our last will and testament, hereby revoking and making void all other testimonials. Thus we whole-heartedly, on this 29th day of May, in the year of 1952, bequeath all property, both real and personal, to be bestowed as follows: SECTION I I. To the freshmen we leave our interest in the school and the ability to do better in high school than the majority of the graduating classes. II. To the sophomores we leave the happiness that comes only from working together and standing behind each other during troubled hours. III. To the juniors we leave our hopes that your last year at Mayodan High School is a full and happy one, and something to be remembered and cherished for the rest of your lives. IV. To the faculty we leave our sincerest thanks for all their pounding and drilling that was necessary to make another dent in our so-called minds. We thank them for all their interest, and hope they are rewarded in some way for every effort put forth to make something worthwhile out of each of us, V. To our principal, who has been with us from the beginning to the end, we leave a hope that he gets all the peace he deserves, after we, the noisiest, stubbornest, and most curious class ever to enter the doors of M. H, S. finally leave our high school days behind us. To M. H. S. we leave our love, and our thanks for some of the happiest days of our lives, and all our knowledge gained within your doors. With you will always be our hopes that each graduating class will be a little bigger and a little bettter than the one before, and each individual a little more appreciative of your troubles and efforts to make them what they are sure to be, intelligent and prosperous citizens! LORENA SHREVE CLASS PROPHECY Time: July 4, l976. Pastime: Reading letters from all my classmates. The first letter I open is from two of our young boys who tell me that after low- rating a couple of their classmates about being such close friends, they think it would be amusing for the girls to know that they, j. B. and Larry, have a money-making Siamese Twins act in the Barnam and Bailey Circus. I find that Sue Collins, who was once told that she laughed like the lady at the carnival, is now that lady. Earlene Doss, three time winner of Miss Mayodan, Madison, and Sandy Ridge, is now running for the title of Miss Lucky Strike, Camel, and Chesterfield. Following many years of hard labor, Clifton Myers has succeeded in swindling Mr. Mashburn into bankruptcy, and is now running the Mayo and Patovia theaters. Shirley Reid, who yodeled for Mayodan High School for a number of years, is now dueting with Mario Lanza in the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. Elizabeth Crews, having spent umpteen years in high school and colleges, is now running for President of the United States on the Republican ticket. Ray Joyce, after rooting for so many years, is now an engineer for the Norfolk and Western Railroad Company. Having read every book in the Mayodan Library, Madeline Myers decided to write a novel which she has now completed. The title-you name it- Casey, Betsy Chambers has taken over the cartoon drawing of Al Capps since he passed away. I didn't receive a letter from Frankie Dean Farris, but I see her riding around with Bootie a lot in her 1974 hotrod. Loretta Hurd, after trying for so many years to cheer our old gridiron squad to victory, decided she would raise her own football team. She has eleven sons ranging from the ages of nine to twenty whom she plans to have on some varsity football team before she quits. Benton Griffen, being so interested in geometry, is now teaching the subject at L. S. U. Betty Crouch, who quietly and simply married Leroy Amos, is now raising a fine family. The smallest boy in our class, Harold Purgerson, has organized the Smaller Men Make Better Husbands club. Rachel Beasley, who lived her high school life too fast, is now at Dix Hill reliving her school life. They tell me she is now in the cheer-leading phase of it. Peggy Atkins, the cutest kid in our class, is now running a reducing salon for plump girls. Delores Duggins is very happily married to jamie Vaden of the United States Army. Kay Bios Minton, after going with several boys from Madison .ind Mayodan, settled down with Ray Shelton. 4She had plenty of stiff competition from the Mayodan and Madison girls? Bruce Lawson, supposedly being the genius of the class of '52, has committed suicide because he wasn't the first man to set foot on the moon. Gail DeShazo is hoofing it for Warner Brothers .ind plans to start her own dancing school soon. Lib Coleman is now taking lessons from Maurie Rose on how to become a hot! rod racer and live. Lorena Shreve, having tried every occupation in the books, has ended as a deep sea diver at Mayo Lake. Iris Mitchell, after ten years of steady dating, has finally succeeded in getting her man, namely, Fred Hand. Steve Joyce, the most bashful boy in our classs- has recently taken over the title of Mayodan's Most Eligible Bachelor. Peggy has finally managed to hold a job longer than six weeks at the Sealtest Placeg reason-she now owns it. Dorothy Alley, after being Lorena's assistant for years, is an inspector of slums for the North Carolina Department of Health. Betty Ann Duggins has retired as an old maid and is keeping house for Delores and jamie. Glenda Williams, after trying all during high school to get the hair style back to long, has cut hers up above her eirs, and is now trying to get everyone else to do the same. Eunice Lemons is now successfully teaching in our old alma mater. Loretta Martin, voted the sweetest girl in our class, is today trying to perfect a new recipe for making sugar, sweeter, And I, Janie Hawkins, having sat here .ind told so many lies, ask forgiveness from my classmates and friends. A large crowd turned out, and everyone seemed pleased at the splendid work of the Juniors under the leadership of Mr. B. L. King. class sponsor, and Billy Walkins, class president. We worked on the carnival for three days and everyone co-operated nicely, including members of other classes who brought articles for use as prizes, and helped in the minstrel show, which made a big hit. After all bills were paid, we had 323500, which was very good. Many complimentary remarks were made about the carnival. After such success, we are looking forward to spending this hard-earned money on what we hope to be a successful junior-Senior Banquet in April. K xii, ink 'T ,X .. 1 'S Y .
