CLASS HISTORY ESTHER M A RTI N On a bright and sunny morning in September. 1959, there appeared at school a group of small children who were just beginning their twelve years of knowledge. Mrs. Loftis and Mrs. Turner helped us over the difficulties of this year, while our leaders for the second year were Miss Sarah Poole and Miss Marjorie Mulligan. While we were in the second grade we had one eventful experience-our first train ride--a trip to Stoneville. For our third year in school out teachers were Mrs. McCollum and Miss Sallie Wall. As we moved upstairs, feeling very grown-up, we had Miss Eleanor Glenn and Miss Annie Martin as our leaders. Miss Edith Spencer and Miss Lewellen led us through the fifth grade. Our teachers in the seventh grade were Miss Elizabeth Smith and Mrs. Bill Crews. Mrs. M. G. Lemons was our teacher for our last year in grammar school. Time passed very quickly until we were ready for high school. As we became freshmen we had as our leader Miss Gladys joyce, Mrs. Crews and Mrs. Lemons, whom we had in grammar school, were also two of our teachers that year. The boys and girls taking part in athletics in the ninth grade were Linda Shreve, Connie Gray, Janice Anderson, Bobbie Myers, Peggy Collins, Mickey Pike, Ray Shaffer, Bud Hodge, Bill Price, Rahn Boyer, Francis Hurd, Charles Martin, Dan Atkins, Tommy Chambers, joe Edwards and johnny Sisk. In the tenth grade, with Mrs. Don Stillwell as our home room teacher, we had our first big high school experience, the ordering of our class rings. In the eleventh grade great excitement reigned in the fall, when these long-looked-for rings came. Then we gave a class play and Halloween Carnival to raise money for the junior-Senior Banquet which was held in April at the Club Martinque, in Martinsville, Va. Mr. Leon Moore was our leader for this fun-filled year. This last year in Mayodan High School we have had Miss Dosier as our leader. One of our high lights for this year has been our trip to Raleigh, when on October 10th, Mr. Duncan and the Senior Class got into the Y bus and went down for the Inauguration of Gordon Gray as President of the Consolidated University of North Carolina. On our way home we toured the Duke University and the University of North Carolina. After twelve years of work and fun we are at the end of our journey, to which we have looked forward-the wearing of caps and gowns, and the presentation of diplomas.
