M FDREVD RD ae' IDEALS AND LIFE Perhaps the most prized possession of living human beings aside from the possession of life itself, is the ability so to order his life that he may feel secure in that life and his other possessions. Every human being desires the order- liness that makes him sure that when he wants to use one of his possessions he can putout his hand and takeit or use it. It is just as true about the orderliness of other things. It is part of his sense of security. ' If one would stop to think, one would realize that it was because of 'someone's ideals that the possibility of having just such orderliness ex1sts.For orderliness suggest method, and method suggest planning, and planning suggest ideals. We thus find that ideals--someone's ideals--furnish the pat- tern from which the comforts and the finer things of lige take shape. For it must not be assumed that orderliness with regard to material possessions, great as we feel it, is alone under consideration here. The same ideals that make one secure in one's material possessions and comforts are patterns that give shape to the long list of rights, both civil and rellf gious, man is heir to. The orderliness that permeates every phase of life is the outgrowth of 1deals.For ideals are not, as some view them, evanescent dreams. 'They are forces that find fruition in deeds. They become absorbed into the life of an individual and give that life a direction, a consis- tency, and a continuity. They do not die, but live on and on even after their owner is dust.

Somewhere along the highway of the dim past, someone had an ideal. He worked on it and spoke of it often, for it was dearer far than his life. At length the man fell on sleep? but people were impressed, and his ideals found lodgment in many a heart. His body went back to dust, but the man became immortal in the ideals he passed on to his followers. In some such way your Pr1ncipal,your teachers, your fel- low-students, your school--all are candidates for an immor- tality that shall come from ideals they fostered andyou took up and lived and that others after you in turn lived, and still others on and on. For ideals are not only life in its best essentials, but a sort of eternal life as well.
