For friendship that these days arelnaEiilg, We’ll lovfc you Mayo High. There’s ajdaq? in our hearts That will never grow old Though times depart. For the treasures you are giving us are like gold; We’re putting them away in our hearts forever, Alma Mater dear, In homage and loyalty due. Ana wnen an lue s victories at last we ye won, We’ll pay tribute to you. —Alic T - You’d “someday” like to do, Work out to make your future days Especially bright for you. 5 The book is finished now, and all the work that has been done has finally paid off. The selling of ads, the advertising around campus, the picture- taking, and — most of all — student appreciation of the annual have made it possible for the 1977 Golden Bear to be a success. Seeing our work published has been the finest possible reward. Donald McAllister, Editor-in-chief Mr. I. A. Greene, Principal Mr. W.E. Boyd, Sr., Assistant Principal 8 Mrs. Clara Peters, Secretary and Bookkeeper ADMINISTRA TION Mr. Renny Johnson, Director of Student Affairs Mrs. Gloria B. Dargan, Assistant Secretary 9 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE To The 1977 Graduating Class I wish to take this opportunity to congratulate each of you for having earned a high school diploma. The faculty and admini- stration join with you in your moments of joy and happiness over this noble achievement. High school graduation is unparallel to any other event in your life because it marks the completion of the longest experience you have shared together. Very rarely do we as individuals spend twelve (12) continuous years in school following high school graduation. Because of the uniqueness of those experiences you have had to- gether I would admonish each of you to subscribe for a copy of your annual so that you may refresh your memories of your most cherished experiences for many, many years to come. I. A. Greene Principal STUDENT COUNCIL PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE My fellow Mayoites, I would like to thank all of you for helping the Student Council to have the incentive to make this our school year when we began our journey to maturity. Though there are many problems that face our present school system, some problems can be alleviated with the help of each individual student. We can each become more involved in the activities at our school, thereby making a livelier student body and helping break the monotony of school life. We can each also practice our individualism and increase our ability to make decisions alone because our ideas could supply the answer to the problems. We should take pride in ourselves and our school. We should attend the extra-curricular activities which are a vital part of our high school educa- tion, and we each should take advantage of the opportunities for a social hour at our school. Mayo needs each of us from the entering freshman to the graduating senior. Lets all continue to join forces to make ours the number one school in our area. We can easily accomplish this goal if we do our share. DARLINGTON - An in- novative Teen Counseling program has been started on a pilot basis using Mayo High School students working with several classes at Cain Elementary School, according to Mrs. Ronna Askins, Attendance'Supervisor of the Darlington County School District. She is also the leader of the district’s Human Resources Development Team, which initiated this new program. Other team members are Mrs. Carolyn Pound, Cain guidance counselor and coordinator of the program there; Bill Boyd, Mayo assistant principal; Peggy Quarles, Spaulding High English teacher; Mrs. Drosella Mack, Education and Prevention Consultant of the Darlington County Com- mission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse; Bill Walters, science teacher at Hartsville Junior High; and Renny Johnson, Mayo social studies teacher and coordinator of the Teen Counselors there. Explaining that Teen Counseling has been tried elsewhere with great success, Mrs. Atkins noted that this is a brand new program for the Darlington County School District, and that it is one of the few such efforts in the state. It is planned that this pilot program will be ex- panded next year into selected schools in all three attendance areas of the school district. Teen Counseling uses carefully chosen high school students in regular visits to selected classes of elementary school students, according to Mrs. Askins. She added that the purpose of the visits is to help the elementary school students develop greater understanding and awareness of themselves and to enhance their abilities to communicate and relate with other people. TTie program can also be of great value to the high school students. An additional benefit is that a school’s guidance counselor is aided in his efforts and is enabled to reach more students than otherwise might be possible. 'Die local program involved 14 Mayo students, who visii seven classes at Cain once a week for an hour at a time. Mrs. Askins emphasized that the Mayo Teen Counselors were carefully screened by Boyd, Mrs. Pound, Mr. Johnson, teachers, and Mayo principal I.A. Greene. Mayo and Cain were chosen for this pilot program, ac- cording to Boyd, because two of the team members were already at those schools himself and Mrs. Pound - and because of the strong support from Mr. Greene. Boyd also explained that classes missed by the Teen Counselors while at Cain were First cleared with the teachers involved. Any work missed by a counselor must be made up; if he falls behind in his school work because of the Teen Counseling, he has to drop out of the program Boyd noted furiner that after the 14 counselors were chosen (from 108 applicants) and before the first visit to Cain, they received two days of intensive training in how to work with elementary school age children. The training was led by a member of the U.S. Office of Education, Southeast Regional Training Center in Miami. Mrs. Pound explained that the Teen Counselors led the Cain students in a variety of activities and exercises. Since the program was only begun in February, the initial sessions have been spent with counselors and students getting acquainted with each other. After a day’s session at Cain, the Mayo students spend one to two hours that af- ternoon after school in con- tinued training, led by Mrs. Pound and Mr. Johnson. They go over what happened that day, discuss any problems that arose, and plan for fur- ther sessions with the Cain students. The program seems to be going very well, according to Boyd and Mrs. Pound. Boyd stated that the counselors are enthusiastic and eager about their work and that they are taking their responsibilities seriously. Mrs. Pound added that the effort was a real growing experience for the high school students, as they learn the value of setting priorities and keeping com- mitments. She also stated that both teachers and students at Cain are responding well to the program. The Cain students involved in it are very ex- cited” about the time they spend with their Teen Counselors, she said. 92 ASSEMBLIES Eugene Sutton asking “Do you believe in God?” nny Johnson speaking words of sdom.
