The purpose of the meeting was to make final plans for the installation services to be held on Friday, October 24. Plans were also discussed for a Student Government Day. The Bears defeated the Lugoff-Elgin Demons by a score of 27-0!! On Friday, October 26, the Bears will travel to Summerton where they will. meet the Scotts Branch Eagles. BE THERE AND CHEER THE BEARS ON TO VICTORY! The Mayo High School Marching Band, under the direction of Mr. Calvin Emanuel, were guests of South Carolina State College on Saturday. The following bands were represented: St. George, Orangeburg-Wilkerson. Rob- erts, Choppee. Claflin, Bowman, Cross, and State’s own Marching 101. The trip was a success and everyone had a nice time. The girls' basketball team, under the leadership of the new headcoach, Mrs. Yolanda Jackson, has begun practice to prepare for the 1975-76 basketball season. The girls are starting out with only three players returning from last season. The rest of the team will be playing for their first time. Good luck to Mrs. Jackson and the team. Things were a little quiet around the Big “M” this week. Get it together fellow Mayoites and let’s keep movin’ on up! The column entitled “The Bear's Growl” is written by Vernessia Denise Patterson. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Patterson, Sr., and a senior at Mayo. She is active in many school af- fairs. Vernessia is a member of the Band, National Honor Society, Student Council, Dramatics Club, Yearbook Staff, Junior Class Marshal, and the Sec- retary of the Future Teachers of America. The Bear’s Growl by VERNESSIA PATTERSON On Wednesday, October 29, we held a very inspiring assembly program. Rev. John Alsbrooks led us in prayer and Rev. E. E. Jenkins, pastor of St. James United Methodist Church of Darlington, made the presentation of the speaker. Our special guest was Rev. Leslie Schanoun, a native of Freetown Africa. He received his education from the University of Scotland. He is now a professor of church history there. The program was very interesting to both the faculty and the student body. A rap session was held immediately after the program, in which Student Council members were present to ask questions. Later in the afternoon each individual student went to his homeroom to be explained the School Bus Safety Laws. A demonstration was given at the football practice field. In the demonstration students were explained how to get off a bus in case of an emergency. The program proved to be suc- cessful and helpful. On Friday, October 31, the Golden Bears ventured to Sumter to meet the Mayewood Vikings. Things looked very grave for the Bears'most of the night. All of a sudden things took, a turn for the better. Victory was in the making! The Bears trampled the Vikings 26-6!! On Friday. November 7. the Bears will journey to Greenville to meet the Furman Indians. BE THERE TO SUPPORT THE BEARS! On Saturday. There must be something very funny; even Mrs. Samuel is laughing. Gee, fellows, what’s so dis- tracting? You have a beau- tiful girl right in front of you. What’s wrong, Carole? Is someone out of place? If this is supposed to be a party, why is everyone looking so gloomy? Something really weird must be happening over there, because everyone looks astonished. Archie’s really looking great for a change. Apparently they were expect- ing this picture to be taken. Looks like there was jam- ming late into the night, because almost everybody’s gone. THE SEASON BEGINS The Bears opened the season with a fine defense game as they went on to defeat Bennettsville by the score of 12-0. The next game was against the Wilson Tigers. This game went dowrn to the final seconds as the Tigers gave the Bears their only regular season loss with the score 16-14. Our arch-rival Butler High was our next opponent. The Bears outstanding defense allowed the Tigers to score only once as they defeated the Tigers 38-6. THE BEARS MIXING IT UP Get that one, L.P.—I9ll take care of this one. The Bears’ next game was against the Whirlwinds of Timmonsville. This being the first conference clash the Bears were at their best on both defense and offense as they trounced the Whirlwinds 50-0. The following week brought the St. Mark Hornets to Bear Country. Thinking about their goal the Bears went on to humil- iate the Hornets 70-0. The Bears then traveled to Camden to take on Lugoff-Elgin. This was another fine night for the Bears as they defeated the Eagles 27-0. The next game saw the Bears come out of a losing half to trounce the Eagles of Scotts Branch 42-18. I got you now! The Bears9 Mighty Defense On that following Friday the Vikings of Mayewood invited the Bears to take a 26-6 victory from them. The Bears, now 5-0 in the conference play, made their record 6-0 by rolling out of a losing first half to defeat Furman by a score of 29-18. The Dragons of Bishopville were the Bears’ next victims. Due to the Bears’ outstanding defense they were able to defeat the Dragons 12-0 and win the 6AA Conference. The next week saw the Bears in the play-off against Edisto. Looking forward and not back brought a 28-6 victory to the Bears! In the second round the Bears were given their second loss of the year, which brought their season record to 10-2.
