THE STUDENT BODY OF MAYO HIGH SCHOOL “Golden Bear” 1973-74 Darlington, South Carolina Volume IX Dedication Mr. Renny E. Johnson To show our gratitude for your accomplishments and service, we dedicate the 1973-74 Golden Bear to you, Mr. Renny Johnson. All during the years that you have been teaching at Mayo, you have participated in many of the school’s activities. Your duties have been performed exceptionally well. Be it concerned with lecturing to your students in your history classes, or giving advice as guidance counselor, or exercising your newly appointed positions as co-ordinator of student affairs and assistant to the principal, you have gained the friendship and trust of many students on campus. Each page of this volume expresses a deep and affectionate warmth for your services to us and others. Mr. Johnson, as the years pass we hope that you will look back in this volume and feel some of the gratitude we tried to express to you. We also hope you realize that we are not thanking you for one year of service, but for all of your accomplishments in the past and for all those we know that you will perform in the coming years. Remember how well you have stated, “students are human beings, handle with care. The main thing in life is not to be afraid to be human.” With these thoughts underlined, we, the members of the yearbook staff and the advisor dedicate this Annual to you. 2 Mr. Renny Johnson going through the trial of grading report cards. Dedication Janice Bacote being sworn in by Mr. Renny Johnson during the installation of the new Student Council Officers and Members. 3 Mr. Renny Johnson conversing with some students. The school year 1973-74 was the beginning of a great school term. This year we, the yearbook staff, have tried to the greatest depths of our ability to publish a yearbook that would please both the faculty and the student body. The yearbook staff tried to make this year’s book as fascinating and as large as the one we had last year. This task took a lot of work and willingness, but it was achieved. The definition of team work should be well-known by those of us who have been involved in an all-night effort to complete deadlines. It was our determination, however, to fill the 1973-74 Golden Bear with photographs of all the poeple and all the activities that are a part of the entire school. Hopefully, we succeeded in our goal. We believed that “If at first you don t succeed, try, try, again.’ This is what we have done. We didn’t say that we couldn’t make it and just stopped trying; we continued with greater effort. My appreciation, moreover, goes to Mr. E. B. Burroughs, our advisor, for his successful planning, organizing, and publicating. It was his patience and continuous guidance that made this year’s book a success. Mere words are not sufficient enough to thank him. It has been more than a pleasure being Editor-in-Chief; it has been an exciting experience full of determined effort. I would like to thank everyone who made this opportunity possible. Io all my lellow Mayoites, “Strive for the best and don’t stop trying until you have achieved your aim in life.’’ My lasting words I leave to you are, “RIGHT-ON!’’ 136 Katherine Jacobs, Editor-in-Chief Not Pictured ASSOCIATE EDITOR Louis Wingate INDEX EDITOR Ethel Goodson COPY EDITOR Gloria Poole 137 SPORT EDITOR Bobby Fields Y e a r b o o k S t a f f FASHION EDITORS LEFT TO RIGHT: Deborah Mack and Vanessa Taylor BUSINESS MANAGER AND ASSISTANT SEATED: BUSINESS MANAGER-Willie Shaw ASSISTANT-Theodore Gandy ADVERTISING MANAGER Gregory Mingo CIRCULATION MANAGER Ernestine Russell BUSINESS AND CIRCULATION MANAGERS STAFF FIRST ROW: LEFT TO RIGHT-Mary Poston, Faye Thomas, Kathy Sawyer, Terri Lediford, Ethel Goodson, Janet Seay.
